Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2 In the autumn of 1867 Mr. Grote undertook to write a short account of Aristotle's striking recognition of the physical aspect of mental phenomena, to be appended to the third edition of the senior editor's work, The Senses and the Intellect'; but, on following out the indications relative to that point, he was gra dually led by his interest in the subject to elaborate a full abstract of the De Anima and the other psycho logical treatises. Several months were spent On this task, and at the end he declared that it had greatly deepened his insight into Aristotle's philosophy as a whole. He also expressed his satisfaction at having thus completed an exposition of the Psychology, fitted to stand as his contribution to that part Of Aristotle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated With Essays and Notes Author of this work is conscious that in many places it requires re - writing. He would have wished to re-cast especially many parts of the 'essays, ' and to introduce into them the results of fresh reading and thought. But official duties in India have pre cluded him from attempting such a task, and have obliged him to be content with a bare completion of his commentary, by the addition of notes (such as they are) upon the last four books of the Nicomachean Ethics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organon, or Logical Treatises, of Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2: With the Introduction of Porphyry Wvherefore, while primarily connected with the laws of Thought, Logic is secondarily and practically allied to language as enunciative of Thought. To enter into the mental processes incident thereto, though so tempt ing a theme as already to have seduced many from the direct subject of the science, would far exceed the limits of this Introduction. We shall therefore content ourselves with a few observations upon the utility of the study connected with the Organon itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle's Treatise on Poetry, Translated, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notes on the Translation, and on the Original; And Two Dissertations on Poetical, and Musical, Imitation It would be doing injustice to the translation lately given to the public by Mr. Pye, to place it, in any view, however favourable, by the side of these. A particular and critical examination of its merits would come with little propriety from me. So much, however, I may be allowed to say, for it is an indisputable fact, that Mr. Pye's translation and mine are frequently very differ ant; and that, in many passages, if he is right, I must confess myself to be wrong. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2 The historian of Greece, when closing his great narrative in the year 1856, promised to follow out in a separate work that speculative movement of the fourth century B.C. which upheld the supremacy of the Hellenic intellect long after the decline of Hellenic liberty. He had traced the beginnings of the movement in the famous chapter on Sokrates, but to do justice to its chief heroes - Plato and Aristotle - proved to be impossible within the limits of the History. When, however, the promised work appeared, after nine laborious years, it was found to compass only Plato and the other immediate companions of Sokrates, leaving a full half of the appointed task unperformed. Mr. Grote had already passed his 70th year, but saw in this only a reason for turning, without a moments pause, to the arduous labour still before him. Thence forth, in spite of failing strength and the increasing distraction of public business, he held steadily on till death overtook him in the middle of the course. What he was able to accomplish, though not what study he had gone through towards the remainder of his design, these volumes will show. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated With Essays and Notes; Containing Essays on the Ethics of Aristotle These lectures I listened to ten years ago in Balliol College; they were the first introduction into Oxford of the study of the history of philosophy. Those who have had the privilege of hearing them Will feel, what I cannot h0pe here to convey, the sense of their great excellence and importance. I must also thank the kindness of my friend, Mr. Edward Poste, Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, whose Aristotelian learning has been of the greatest service to me, especially at the beginning of my labours; and I must conclude by Offering my thanks to my friend, Mr. James Ferrier, Professor of Moral Philosophy in the Uni versity of St. Andrews, for the profound metaphysical point of view, which in many a conversation on phi losophy, he has shown me.
