The last King, her uncle, ennobled seven of his illegitimate children, while two others married peers. One of these first cous ins was for a long time Her Majesty's housekeeper, another her naval aid-de-camp. They are proud of the kinship, too, and sport the royal liveries. There are connections, however, that Victoria does not recognize. The line seems to be drawn at the descendants of sovereigns. One of the family habitually visits German watering-places with a lady who is not his wife, and duchesses dine with her because of her relations with royalty but the sullied gentlewoman never went to Windsor. Her Majesty countenances no such conduct In subjects, of whatever degree. It Is needless to say that her own life has been a model of purity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Aristocracy and the House of Lords It has often been said that our victory at Waterloo was a great misfortune to England; and in general terms the truth of this remark can hardly be gainsaid. Our successes as against the armies of the Revolution certainly kept the current of new human forces and ideas associated with that movement at a distance, and warded it off from our shores. The feudal system, broken down and disorganised all over the Continent by Napoleon, preserved its old tradition in these islands. And one consequence has been that, in the matters of our Land-system and our Aristocracy, we are now a hundred years behind the rest of Western Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aristocracy: A Novel While she thus sits let us have a look at her and see what she is like. Fat, red-faced, and waddling - that doom of nine tenths of British highborn matronhood, the other tenth being thin, bony, and pinched - she yet shows in her arched eyebrows, thin nostrils, short, curled upper lip, white, smooth forehead, small ears, and delicately poised head on a neck which refuses to grow short and fat with the rest of her body, those indices of noble birth which are supposed to belong exclusively and of natural right to the nobility, but which as a matter of obstinate fact are found quite as often, if not indeed oftener, among the so-called middle classes. Did you have a real, personal knowledge of all classes in England you would say she had the body of a peeress and the face and head of a had-been pretty woman of no class in particular. Did you depend upon Bulwer Lytton, Disraeli, Oui da, The Duchess, and Miss Braddon for the formation of your ideal you would think her face a model of British high-born femininity, while her body you would regard as a painful exception to the gen eral rule. However, though she may not satisfactorily look it, the Marchioness of Oaktorrington is a repre sentative of the English aristocracy, and a pretty fair one at that. Not only is she the wife of the Marquis of Oaktorrington (which any costermonger's daughter might be), and therefore an aristocrat by marriage and position; but she is the daughter of the Duke of Tallyforward, * one of England's most ancient ducts. These primers of good manners are naturally useless to persons whose daily course of life from their infancy has led them only over well-trodden paths of good manners, accurately marked out for them by many generations of well-bred ancestors. Such, however, is far from being the case with all who are "in society." Take, for instance, the manufacturer of blacking who chose as a motto, and had engraved on his carriage, the couplet - Blacking bought it: Who'd have thought it? He probably required some little education in "minor morals" before he could succeed in passing muster under the critical eyes of the well-bred persons among whom his carriage would certainly succeed in placing him soon or late. To such as he, a book on etiquette is no useless volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When the Roman Empire sank to the depths before the deluge of Christianity, it was not long ere what was left of the firm Roman rocks was swept away in the dun floods. When the German Revolution, euphemistically baptized the Reformation, gave the Renascence of Italy its death-blow, not one man arose capable of stemming the unlocked waters. It was only at the third and last plague of this description, namely, the breaking of the French Revolution over Europe, that Nature was kind, and created - after the manner of some of her bacilli - the remedy to counter the disease, a Napoleon to baffle anarchy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glory and Shame of England, Vol. 1 I do not expect much good-will from the British Government, or most of the British aristocracy, for writing this book. I am working for the emancipation of whole nations, and the eleva tion of all men. England has always been working for the overthrow of rival nationalities, and the political subjection of men. England fights for the few - I for the many. She for Aristocracy - I for Democracy. She for the present - I for the future. No wonder we-should not agree any too well. In justice to myself, however, it should be always held'in mind, that, in speaking of England, I mean the Government and the ruling classes of the British empire - not the British people, for whom I entertain all the sympathies which spring unbidden from the common fountains of kindred, language, laws and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Nobility of the British Gentry, or the Political Ranks and Dignities of the British Empire, Compared With Those on the Continent It has been asserted by envy or ignorance, that the peers are the only nobility in the British empire. This assertion has been repeated on the Continent, and particularly in France, by those who wish to inculcate the inutility of the ancient noblesse. This assertion, however unfounded, has done injury to individuals, and is derogatory to the honor not only of the gentry, but of the peers themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Sketch of the Maltese Nobility In England the Opinion seems to prevail that the peers are the nobility, an opinion as erroneous as it is fallacious, as has been clearly proved by several learned authors. It is true that the pee-rs of the realm enjoy certain privileges from which the other members of the aristocracy or nobility are excluded, but it does not arise in consequence that the younger sons of dukes, marquesses, &c., are less noble than their fathers or elder brothers, -otherwise there would be a manifest contradiction in the rules of precedency observed in the United Kingdom. The peers are only, as it were, the representatives or mandataries of their respective families. But whatever may be the English custom, it is far from be ing so in many European countries, but more especially in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy and Russia. This latter country is said to contain nobles; Austria on a late enumeration Spain, in 1785, and France, during the first revolution, numbers which could never have swelled so much if only the actual possessors of titles or heads of families were to be considered as forming the nobility.
