In the seventeenth millennium, the New Commonality of Humankind is expanding, using newly-discovered faster-than-light travel to rediscover lost worlds colonised in the distant past. It's a time of turmoil, of clashing cultures, as civilisations shudder and collapse before the might of a benevolent empire ten millennia old. In the Solenine Cluster, things are going from bad to worse, as hyper-advanced technologies destabilise a world in chaos. Thaddeus Clay and his SCI Force special ops team are on the trail of the Transmigration Heresy. What they find is something beyond even their imagining - something which could tear the whole Commonality apart... "Thrilling adventure and mystery wrapped up with an inventive, mind-bending look at mankind's future." - Howard Andrew Jones, author of The Desert of Souls "Science fiction like this never dies." - Chris Helton, Dorkland "Complex, gripping... the most original sci-fi you're likely to get..." - G*M*S Magazine "a very exciting and intelligently-written novel that should be on the reading list of every SF fan!" - Stargazer's World "William Gibson-like in the intensity of the ideas it introduces... a heady mixture of action, crunchy science fiction elements and that perennial cyberpunk or transhuman question: what does human mean?" - Shores of Night

Book Synopsis Poems of Guido Gezelle by : Paul Vincent
Download or read book Poems of Guido Gezelle written by Paul Vincent and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bruges-born poet-priest Guido Gezelle(1830–1899) is generally considered one of the masters of nineteenth-century European lyric poetry. At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezellewas hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modern Flemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlands and often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889). In this bilingual anthology, award-winning translator Paul Vincent selects a representative picture of Gezelle’soutput, from devotional through narrative, to celebratory and expressionistic. Gezelle’sfavourite themes are childhood, the Flemish landscape, friendship, nature, religion and the Flemish vernacular, and his apparently simple poems conceal a sophisticated prosody and a dialogue with spiritual and literary tradition. However, an important barrier to wider international recognition of his lyric genius up to now has been the absence of translations that do justice to the vigour and musicality of Gezelle’sWest Flemish idiom. Two of the translations included go some way to redressing the balance: ‘TheWatter-Scriever’ by Scotland’s national poet Edwin Morgan and ‘A Little Leaf . . .’ by Francis Jones. Both translators make brilliant use of their own vernaculars (Glaswegian and North Yorkshire respectively) to bring Gezelleto life for the non-Dutch-speaking reader.
Book Synopsis Byzantium in the Time of Troubles by : Eric McGeer
Download or read book Byzantium in the Time of Troubles written by Eric McGeer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years before and after the battle of Mantzikert (1071) mark a turning point in the history of the Byzantine Empire. The invasions of the Seljuk Turks in the east and the encroachment of the Normans from the west altered the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean and forced the Byzantines to confront new threats to their survival. These threats came at a time when internal rivalries made an effective military response all but impossible and led to a significant transformation of the Byzantine polity under the Komnenoi. The Continuation of the Chronicle of John Skylitzes, now translated for the first time, provides a contemporary view of these troubled times. An extension of the principal source for the middle Byzantine period, and a subtle reworking of the History of Michael Attaleiates, the Continuation offers a high court official’s narrative of the events and personages that shaped the course of Byzantine history on the eve of the Crusades.
