La comparaison des classiques confucéens et des cosmogonies périphériques, telle celle des Hani dans la province du Yunnan, soulève d'abord la question des influences réciproques entre différentes constructions mythologiques que l'Empire du Milieu a mises en contact. L'analyse rhétorique vient ensuite éclairer les enjeux de la concurrence au salut des âmes que se livrent les voix catholiques, protestantes et musulmanes dans la Haute-Volta coloniale (aujourd'hui Burkina Faso). Les mots mêmes sont des êtres qui font agir au-delà du sens qu'ils véhiculent comme le rappelle l'examen d'un débat scolastique dans la chrétienté médiévale. Enfin, l'attention portée aux gestes, comme c'est le cas pour l'étude de certaines salutations cérémonielles au Brésil, met à jour leur force de lien. Dans une perspective de science politique, sont ensuite décrits le rôle joué par la philanthropie bouddhiste dans l'action sociale de la Chine contemporaine ainsi qu'en Italie l'émergence d'un islam national s'ancrant dans les collectivités locales. Deux réflexions de nature méthodologique et épistémologique ferment la marche : l'une sur la mesure quantitative des pratiques religieuses en Suisse ; l'autre sur les limites de l'analogie religieuse dans l'approche de la célébrité publique. Un petit dossier thématique s'adjoint à cette livraison par un retour sur Thérèse de Lisieux comme figure littéraire (Theresiana). La jeune sainte carmélite fut-elle en effet une écrivaine, progressivement enfouie par le procès de sa sanctification ? Cette forte hypothèse, développée par Claude Langlois dans de nombreux ouvrages, est ici présentée, discutée et accompagnée par d'autres approches d'une expérience d'écriture féminine conventuelle à l'époque du Modernisme catholique.

It considers the forces behind the East Asian growth miracle, the process of growth, the effect of saving, and the effect of foreign direct investment and multinationals. Taking an optimistic view, the authors conclude that rapid growth may resume in East Asia once the crisis has been resolved. The authors argue that a growth process links East Asian countries to each other and to the industrial world, and that growth reflects a process that combines capital formation and technical and institutional change. The 1997 crisis grew out of excessively rapid boom and must be handled before growth will resume. But, the authors conclude, once the crisis has been resolved, the linked process of growth supported by appropriate policies, high levels of savings and investment, and foreign investment will allow growth to resume, although perhaps with a different geographic center of gravity.

Book excerpt: The oldest Islamic biography of Muhammad, written in the mid-eighth century, relates that the prophet died at Medina in 632, while earlier and more numerous Jewish, Christian, Samaritan, and even Islamic sources indicate that Muhammad survived to lead the conquest of Palestine, beginning in 634-35. Although this discrepancy has been known for several decades, Stephen J. Shoemaker here writes the first systematic study of the various traditions. Using methods and perspectives borrowed from biblical studies, Shoemaker concludes that these reports of Muhammad's leadership during the Palestinian invasion likely preserve an early Islamic tradition that was later revised to meet the needs of a changing Islamic self-identity. Muhammad and his followers appear to have expected the world to end in the immediate future, perhaps even in their own lifetimes, Shoemaker contends. When the eschatological Hour failed to arrive on schedule and continued to be deferred to an ever more distant point, the meaning of Muhammad's message and the faith that he established needed to be fundamentally rethought by his early followers. The larger purpose of The Death of a Prophet exceeds the mere possibility of adjusting the date of Muhammad's death by a few years; far more important to Shoemaker are questions about the manner in which Islamic origins should be studied. The difference in the early sources affords an important opening through which to explore the nature of primitive Islam more broadly. Arguing for greater methodological unity between the study of Christian and Islamic origins, Shoemaker emphasizes the potential value of non-Islamic sources for reconstructing the history of formative Islam.

Book excerpt: Patricia Crone's God's Rule is a fundamental reconstruction and analysis of Islamic political thought focusing on its intellectual development during the six centuries from the rise of Islam to the Mongol invasions. Based on a wide variety of primary sources--including some not previously considered from the point of view of political thought--this is the first book to examine the medieval Muslim answers to questions crucial to any Western understanding of Middle Eastern politics today, such as why states are necessary, what functions they are meant to fulfill, and whether or why they must be based on religious law. The character of Muslim political thought differs fundamentally from its counterpart in the West. The Christian West started with the conviction that truth (both cognitive and moral) and political power belonged to separate spheres. Ultimately, both power and truth originated with God, but they had distinct historical trajectories and regulated different aspects of life. The Muslims started with the opposite conviction: truth and power appeared at the same time in history and regulated the same aspects of life. In medieval Europe, the disagreement over the relationship between religious authority and political power took the form of a protracted controversy regarding the roles of church and state. In the medieval Middle East, religious authority and political power were embedded in a single, divinely sanctioned Islamic community--a congregation and state made one. The disagreement, therefore, took the form of a protracted controversy over the nature and function of the leadership of Islam itself. Crone makes Islamic political thought accessible by relating it to the contexts in which it was formulated, analyzing it in terms familiar to today's reader, and, where possible, comparing it with medieval European and modern political thought. By examining the ideological point of departure for medieval Islamic political thought, Crone provides an invaluable foundation for a better understanding of contemporary Middle Eastern politics and current world events.
