Download or read book Sport and Architecture written by Benjamin S. Flowers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport and architecture are two elements of contemporary life that have a broad and profound impact on the world around us. The role architecture plays in shaping buildings and societies has occupied historians for centuries. Likewise, the cultural, economic, and political importance of sport is the subject of sustained academic inquiry. When sport and architecture converge, as in the 2012 London Olympics or the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, then the impact of these two forms of social activity is redoubled. This book presents a new and dynamic study of the complex relationship between sport and architecture. It explores the history of sport architecture and examines the buildings and events that create sites where sport and architecture converge in particularly telling ways. Its chapters discuss the following topics: sport architecture and urban redevelopment sport architecture and technology sport architecture and nationalism sport architecture as social activism sport architecture and global capitalism. By considering the importance of architectural form alongside these key themes, this book represents a landmark study for anybody interested in the social and cultural significance of architecture or sport.

Book Synopsis Sport Architecture. Design Construction Management of Sport Infrastructure by : Emilio Faroldi
Download or read book Sport Architecture. Design Construction Management of Sport Infrastructure written by Emilio Faroldi and published by LetteraVentidue Edizioni. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of civilisations and places conveys the importance of the role the culture of sport and a cultivated management of leisure play in the definition of the identity of peoples and communities. Elevating such realms to the status of cultural assets to be shared and enhanced by analysing the dynamics of transformation of the city and territory related to them is a sensible, necessary and ethically correct action. The context of European architecture shows an increasing number of plans that both transform existing facilities and create new ones with a defining and strategic role in the development of urban and landscape fabrics. Activating a basic and permanent theoretical discussion is a fundamental and strategic action for the credibility and professional values of a sector that powerfully conveys the need to update and retrain its technical, executive and managerial personnel through a renewed cultural approach. The goal of this book is promoting awareness about the design enhancement of sport infrastructures as collective assets capable of developing identity and citizenship, through the analysis of both physical and immaterial factors and of the personnel charged with their conception, construction and management. Within contemporary architecture, the design of facilities for sport practice provides an extraordinary opportunity for the adaptation and strategic re-evaluation of the environment and its paradigmatic places. At the same time, sport infrastructures provide a crucial opportunity for architectural, design and technological experimentation – exploring their core features and enhance their potential is the main goal of this book.

Book Synopsis Exercises in Architecture by : Simon Unwin
Download or read book Exercises in Architecture written by Simon Unwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture is a doing word. You can learn a great deal about the workings of architecture through analysing examples but a fuller understanding of its powers and potential comes through practice, by trying to do it... This book offers student architects a series of exercises that will develop their capacity for doing architecture. Exercises in Architecture builds on and supplements the methodology for architectural analysis presented in the author’s previous book Analysing Architecture (third edition, Routledge, 2009) and demonstrated in his Twenty Buildings Every Architect Should Understand (Routledge, 2010). The three books taken together deal with the three aspects of learning: description, analysis of examples, and practice. The book offers twelve exercises, each divided into a short series of tasks aimed at developing a particular theme or area of architectural capacity. The exercises deal with themes such as place-making, learning through drawing, framing, light, , uses of geometry, stage setting, eliciting emotional responses, the genetics of detail and so forth.

Book Synopsis Performance-Oriented Architecture by : Michael Hensel
Download or read book Performance-Oriented Architecture written by Michael Hensel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture is on the brink. It is a discipline in crisis. Over the last two decades, architectural debate has diversified to the point of fragmentation and exhaustion. What is called for is an overarching argument or set of criteria on which to approach the design and construction of the built environment. Here, the internationally renowned architect and educator Michael Hensel advocates an entirely different way of thinking about architecture. By favouring a new focus on performance, he rejects longstanding conventions in design and the built environment. This not only bridges the gap between academia and practice, but, even more significantly, the treatment of form and function in design. It also has a far-reaching impact on knowledge production and development, placing an important emphasis on design research in architecture and the value of an interdisciplinary approach. Though ‘performance’ first evolved as a concept in the humanities in the 1940s and 1950s, it has never previously been systematically applied in architecture in an inclusive manner. Here Michael Hensel offers Performance-Orientated Architecture as an integrative approach to architectural design, the built environment and questions of sustainability. He highlights how core concepts and specific traits, such as climate, material performance and settlement patterns, can put architecture in the service of the natural environment. A wide range of examples are cited to support his argument, from traditional sustainable buildings, such as the Kahju Bridge in Isfahan and the Topkapí Palace in Istanbul to more contemporary works by Cloud 9, Foreign Office Architects, Steven Holl and OCEAN.
