Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Drawing For the many American architects and students of architecture who have enjoyed Mr. Spiers' ready hospitality, nothing that bears his name will need any preface or introduction. His skill and experience in architectural drawing. Both as a draughtsman and as a teacher, are known also beyond this privileged circle and will lead a larger public to receive with interest what he has to say and to examine with curiosity the typical examples which this book presents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progressive Steps in Architectural Drawing In presenting this work it has been the purpose of the writer to follow a definite system of draughtsmanship, and to explain the various steps taken so that they will act as a guide to the young student-draughtsman. As a rule the student knows how the finished product should appear, but seldom has he any definite idea of how best to obtain this result. He will find himself drawing line after line without their hav ing any meaning to him; in some cases using another drawing as an example, count ing the lines of the cornice, belt course or other details and laying great stress on the number of lines used, but knowing little of their meaning or effect. Very often in the classroom the student will be found working earnestly over unimportant features of the plan or elevation before he has worked out broadly the whole drawing. This often brings his work to an abrupt stop, and he has no idea of how to proceed with his drawing in a practical manner. Had the student blocked out the plans and elevations in their entirety, he would have at once obtained a grasp of the problem which would have enabled him to carry out his work to a success ful completion. The experienced draughtsman must not judge the beginner too severely for any mistakes which he may make. The student is practically learning a new language, and therefore he must acquire the proper pronunciation and meaning of the words, step by step, before he can readily talk (or draw) with his pencil in a creditable manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Drawing Board: A Draftmen's Hand Book It was a quite common custom in the West during the early nineties for draftsmen to visit each other's boards and discuss their work and methods, or during the noon hour while eating lunch at the board or at the big detail table which was used only occasionally, to talk over past ex periences in other offices and tell about little short cuts and methods of other draftsmen - that is how I first heard and learned of the work of Harvey Ellis and D. A. Gregg. Again perhaps one of the older men was working on a particularly interesting drawing and the student and some of the younger men were allowed to look on for a few minutes and even' to ask a question or two. All these things did not help the orderly working of the drafting room but they contributed mightily to the education of the draftsman, particularly if he were anxious to learn. I can recall no ex periences of my cub days with greater pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Draughtsman's Book of Industrial Design: Forming a Complete Course of Mechanical, Engineering, and Architectural Drawing Industrial Design is destined to become a universal language; for in our material age of rapid transition from abstract, to applied, Science - in the midst of our extraordinary tendency towards the perfection of the means of conversion, or manufacturing production - it must soon pass current in every land. It is, indeed, the medium between Thought and Execution; by it alone can the genius of Conception convey its meaning to the skill which executes or suggestive ideas become living, practical realities. It is emphatically the exponent of the projected works of the Practical Engineer, the Manufacturer, and the Builder; and by its aid only, is the Inventor enabled to express his views before he attempts to realise them. Boyle has remarked, in his early times, that the excellence of manufactures, and the facility of labour, would be much promoted, if the various expedients and contrivances which lie concealed in private hands, were, by reciprocal communications, made generally known; for there are few operations that are not performed by one or other with some peculiar advantages, which, though singly of little importance, would, by conjunction and concurrence, open new inlets to knowledge, and give new powers to diligence; and Herschel, in our own days, has told us that, next to the establishment of scientific institutions, nothing has exercised so powerful an influence on the progress of modern science, as the publication of scientific periodicals, in directing the course of general observation, and holding conspicuously forward models for emulative imitation. Yet, without the aid of Drawing, how can this desired reciprocity of information be attained; or how would our scientific literature fulfil its purpose, if denied the benefit of the graphic labours of the Draughtsman? Our verbal interchanges would, in truth, be vague and barren details, and our printed knowledge, misty and unconvincing. Independently of its utility as a precise art, Drawing really interests the student, whilst it instructs him. It instils sound and accurate ideas into his mind, and develops his intellectual powers in compelling him to observe as if the objects he delineates were really before his eyes. Besides, he always does that the best, which he best understands; and in this respect, the art of Drawing operates as a powerful stimulant to progress, in continually yielding new and varied results. A chance sketch - a rude combination of carelessly considered pencillings - the jotted memoranda of a contemplative brain, prying into the corners of contrivance - often form the nucleus of a splendid invention. An idea thus preserved at the moment of its birth, may become of incalculable value, when rescued from the desultory train of fancy, and treated as the sober offspring of reason. In nice gradations, it receives the refining touches of leisure - becoming, first, a finished sketch, - then a drawing by the practised hand - so that many minds may find easy access to it, for their joint counsellings to improvement - until it finally emerges from the workshop, as a practical triumph of mechanical invention - an illustrious example of a happy combination opportunely noticed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Architectural Drawing in the School of Architecture Most of this work is done with the pen, pencil-marks upon trac ing-paper being neither distinct nor durable. The outlines of course are traced, from prints or photographs, just as they are found. But the shading, even in the case of wood-cuts, is not text ually reproduced, the forms of the shades and shadows being ren dered by a series of flat tints. These are sometimes put in with the brush, but more often with the pen, parallel vertical lines being employed just as in drawing. This work is indeed, both in the out line work and in the shading, an admirable introduction to draught manship with pen or pencil. The brush is in constant use, how ever, in making tracings of examples of colored decoration from prints of Egyptian tombs, Greek vases, or tiles and terra cotta of every period. The outlines are then sometimes drawn with the pen and filled in with color, which is often laid on the other side of the paper. But these may be dispensed with and the tracing made with the brush altogether. This is particularly effective in tracing anthemions and honeysuckle work from Greek vases, and in this work Japanese brushes prove specially serviceable. These exercises are immediately utilized in the service of the historical studies which compose a chief part of our course. While practicing the essential principles of draughtsmanship in making tracings from drawings, engravings and photographs, our students are at the same time accumulating valuable memoranda for future reference. The tracing books in which this work is stored away become, before the end of the course is reached, a priceless pos. Session. (plate II.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Rendering in Wash Opinion has proclaimed that a preface should introduce the author to his audience. I should add - and prepare that audience for the work itself. "Architectural Rendering in Wash" presents its author in the diverse capacities of architect, drafts man, painter, and writer. Incidentally, it suggests other qualifications of this many-sided personality. It presents its subject from the view-points of architect and draftsman, and harmonizes them. It solves a host of difficult problems and answers many trying questions. It is the architectural draftsman who will be the greatest beneficiary, who will find his work has been made easier and his output improved by the acquisition of this new and engaging text book and authority. The architect will benefit in that his work will be better presented, and possibly he may, himself, be better able to appreciate what architectural presentation means. Posterity will come in for a great acquisition in that through this work there will be recorded what other wise might one day join the "lost arts," for architectural rendering is to-day at its zenith, indisputably an art in itself, and a great one. I foresee for this book a widespread and lasting influence for the betterment of artistic appreciation, architectural draftsmanship, and last, but not least, architecture itself; and I commend it to all whose interests embrace these subjects, and to that great group of discerning men and women, the public - on whom by the very nature of things - the future of all art must depend.
