This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory and practice of art underwent a number of fascinating changes between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries, changes which are clearly revealed in this unique collection of letters, journals, essays, and other writings by the artists and their contemporaries. In the poems of Michelangelo, the Dialogues of Carducho, or the Discourses of Sir Joshua Reynolds, one discovers the stylistic and philosophical concerns of the artist, while the record of Veronese's trial before the Holy Tribunal, the diary of Bernini's journey in France, the letters of Rubens and Poussin or biographical sketches of Rembrandt and Watteau reveal not only the personalities but also the conditions of the times. These basic and illuminating documents, now again available in paperback, provide an unparalleled opportunity for insight into the art and ideas of the periods the author discusses.

Book Synopsis Villard's Legacy by : Marie-Thérèse Zenner
Download or read book Villard's Legacy written by Marie-Thérèse Zenner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Villard's Legacy is in memory of the celebrated iconoclastic historian, Jean Gimpel, and represents a fundamental contribution to the new AVISTA series with Ashgate Publishing. AVISTA was the brainchild of Gimpel, a genius at making the right people meet to advance knowledge through a confluence of ideas drawn equally from the practical and scholarly domains. Sixteen papers and a tribute to Gimpel underscore this confluence of technology, science and art within medieval culture. Appropriately, six papers offer new interpretations on aspects of Villard de Honnecourt's portfolio, which Gimpel rightly recognized and promoted as a unique and precious record of pre-modern technology and culture. This thirteenth-century manuscript is now known to a wider public as the earliest testimony left by a master builder in Gothic Europe. Of particular significance, for the first time in eight centuries, a Compagnon du Devoir, initiated in the same oral tradition as Villard, opens the door to interpreting these remarkable drawings. Three papers address previously ignored aspects in the construction of French and English Gothic churches, from the engineering of aerodynamic spires, to the elastic materials of vault webbing, to the social conventions of formal design. Three other contributors treat essential elements of a broader technological culture, such as the horse harness and the minting of coins, as well as the applicability of medieval technology to the modern world, in particular third world countries, a project pioneered by Gimpel. Four papers conclude the volume by treating the sciences of measure and their cultural expression in medieval Europe, embracing both the concepts of space and time, geometry as a mathematical discipline, and the graphic expression of scientific data. These interdisciplinary studies are comprehensive in chronological and geographic range, extending from the 8th to 15th centuries, from Ireland across Europe.

Book Synopsis Janello Torriani and the Spanish Empire by : Cristiano Zanetti
Download or read book Janello Torriani and the Spanish Empire written by Cristiano Zanetti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janello Torriani, known in the Spanish-speaking world as Juanelo Turriano (Cremona, Italy ca. 1500 – Toledo, Spain 1585), is the greatest among Renaissance inventors and constructors of machines. Contemporary literates and mathematicians celebrated Janello Torriani and his creations in their writings. It is striking how such fame turned into nearly complete oblivion, leaving only a few clues of a blurred and distorted memory dispersed here and there. This book wishes to show the central role that artisans formed in the Vitruvian tradition played in demonstrating through practical mathematics an increasing and positive control over Nature, a step rooted in humanist culture and foundational for the understanding of those historical processes known as the Scientific and the Industrial Revolutions.

Book Synopsis The Template-makers of the Paris Basin by : John James
Download or read book The Template-makers of the Paris Basin written by John James and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 12th- and 13th-century early Gothic churches from the region around Paris which form the basis of this study were large-scale undertakings. Dr James draws on evidence which suggests that work proceeded in a series of projects, when funding, technical problems (for example, slow-setting mortar), and the work of other trades (such as roofing and centring) allowed. Within each project there were generally a number of separately organised phases, or `campaigns', and it is from close study of these campaigns that the author proceeds to an identification of the characteristics of the individual master masons, the template-makers.

Book Synopsis An Apology For Poetry (Or The Defence Of Poesy) by : Philip Sidney
Download or read book An Apology For Poetry (Or The Defence Of Poesy) written by Philip Sidney and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-04 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Apology for Poetry (or The Defence of Poesy), by the celebrated soldier-poet Sir Philip Sidney, is the most important work of literary theory published in the Renaissance. Its wit and inventiveness place it among the first great literary productions of the age of Shakespeare. Since 1965 Geoffrey Shepherd's edition of the Apology has been the standard, and this revision of Shepherd's edition, with a new introduction and extensive notes, is designed to introduce Sidney's best-known work to a new generation of readers at the beginning of thetwenty-first century.Unfamiliar words and phrases are glossed, classical and other references explained, and difficult passages analysed in detail. This greatly expanded edition will be of value to all those interested in the Renaissance, from students and teachers at school and university to the inquisitive general reader.
