Site 15Hd488 is a multi-component site encompassing an Early Archaic upland open habitation site and a late nineteenth-mid-twentieth century farmstead. A portion of the site had already been destroyed. The site is considered potentially eligible for the National Register. If the installation proposes to expand the borrow pit westward, the remaining portion of the site should be tested prior to earth-moving activities.

Book excerpt: In May 1994, the Fort Knox cultural resource management staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of 13.2 ha (32.5 acres) for the proposed Wilcox Range upland urban area, observation tower, and access road on Fort Knox, Bullitt County, Kentucky. The survey recorded 15Bu528 plus one isolate and revisited 15Bu489. Previously recorded 15Bu488 could not be relocated and is presumed destroyed. 15Bu486, in the project area and previously determined to be not eligible for the National Register, was not revisited. 15Bu488, 15Bu488, and 15Bu528 (late nineteenth-mid twentieth century historic sites) and the prehistoric isolate are not eligible for the National Register, and require no additional archaeological work. 15Bu489 is a prehistoric lithic scatter of indeterminate cultural-temporal affiliation. Only the portion of 15Bu489 in the access road improvements corridor was inspected and was determined to be severely disturbed. No additional work is recommended for 15Bu489 in conjunction with the proposed Wilcox Range access road improvements, but expansion north of the existing road would require further testing of 15Bu489. It is recommended that the upland urban area, observation tower, and access road be constructed as proposed. The proposed lowland Wilcox Range improvements area must be surveyed for cultural resources as a separate project.

Both areas were walked in their entirety and evaluated for potential cultural resources. No archaeological sites were found in this study. It is recommended that the improvement and expansion be conducted as proposed.

The survey resulted in the recording of two archaeological sites, 15Hd497 and 15Md382, and revisiting of two previously recorded prehistoric sites, 15Hd170 and 15Hd209. None of the sites is eligible for the National Register, due to previous disturbance. No additional archaeological work is recommended for 15Hd17O, 15Hd209, 15Hd497, or 15Md382. Due to the potential for deeply buried cultural deposits, it is recommended that any machine excavations on the left bank of Mill Creek at Bridge 10, and on the right bank of Otter Creek north of the existing bridge be monitored by a qualified professional archaeologist. Alternatively, test trenches could be excavated in these areas in advance of the bridge construction. The other portions of the Bridge 7, 10, and 12 project areas do not require monitoring of construction excavations.

The timber harvest area encompasses approximately 48 acres (19 ha) in an irregularly shaped area on the ridge tops and slopes adjoining Easy Gap Road. Only selected trees, which were marked by Forestry Section personnel prior to the archaeological survey, will be harvested for marketing, but fallen and damaged trees also will be removed. The survey resulted in the discovery of no archaeological sites. A cemetery (Cemetery #109 or the Stone/Hem Cemetery) is located in the project area and has considerable tree damage near it. It is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed, but that the contract staff archaeologist be on-site when the timbering is performed in the vicinity of the cemetery to assist with the protection and clean-up of the cemetery. If feasible, the cemetery should be fenced after the logging operations are completed to facilitate its future location, protection, and management.

The timber tract encompasses approximately 15.3 ha (37.5 acres). An additional adjacent 5.9 ha (14.7 acres) also were surveyed. The survey recorded three historic archaeological sites, 15Hd502-15Hd504, and the recovery of a prehistoric isolated find. Isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. Site 15Hd504, the isolated find, and a portion of 15Hd503 lie outside the proposed timber tract. The historic sites have an end date of 1919 and are considered potentially eligible for the National Register due to the presence of intact cultural deposits. Sites 15Hd502 and 15Hd504 are also potentially eligible because of their association with individuals of local, and possibly state and national, significance. Because the timber harvest is being conducted to improve airfield safety, site avoidance is not feasible. It is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed except that heavy machinery use on sites be minimized and that archaeologists be present during the logging of site areas to assist in the avoidance of damage.

The survey recorded 15Hd528-15Hd535 and five isolated finds. Sites 15Hd528, l5Hd53O, 15Hd532, 15Hd533, and isolated finds TA3-IFl and TA6-IF2 through TA6-IF4 have indeterminate prehistoric components. Sites 15Hd529 and 15Hd531 have Late Archaic-Early Woodland components, and 15Hd534 has Late Archaic and Late Woodland-Mississippian components. TA6-IF1 is an unidentified Middle-Late Archaic projectile point. Site 15Hd535 is a late nineteenth-early twentieth century historic site. Sites 15Hd528-15Hd530 and 15Hd532-15Hd535 and the isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd531 is potentially eligible for the National Register due to the presence of intact topsoil over much of the site and conditions not conducive to a complete evaluation of the site. The tank trail passing through 15Hd531 is eroded well into subsoil, so grading it will not affect intact areas of the site. It is recommended that archaeologists monitor tree planting in the 15Hd531 vicinity, examining soil profiles and screening the soil prior to backfilling of the tree root holes.
