Book excerpt: During a 5,793 acre archaeological survey at the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, Las Animas County, Colorado, 112 sites and 77 isolated artifacts were identified. The Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site is a large military base used by the United States Army as a maneuver area for mechanized tracked and wheeled vehicles. Live-fire training occurs within two large ranges on a periodic basis. Most sites are cultural material scatters or places where fragments of chipped-stone flaking debris, chipped-stone tools, or ground-stone tools are exposed on the modern ground surface. Nearly a quarter of the project sites, however, contain the remnants of stone houses such as tipi rings or Apishapa phase architectural units. Most of the projects sites were found along canyon edges where access to food and non-food resources was good. The types of artifacts identified by archaeologists at these locations indicate canyon areas were utilized from the Paleoindian stage to the historic period.

Book excerpt: In Ground in Stone: Landscape, Social Identity, and Ritual Space on the High Plains, Elizabeth Lynch examines the insights and challenges of bedrock ground stone research in archaeological inquiry. Ground in Stone includes analyses of case studies to illustrate field data collection techniques as well as the rich social lives of ground in stone on the Chaquaqua Plateau. Lynch argues that the bedrock features in southeastern Colorado offer valuable insight into the archaeology of the High Plains because they are spaces where people gathered to craft important products—food, tools, and art. In doing so, these places anchored human movement to the landscape and became integral to story-telling and cultural lifeways.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 2003, evaluative testing was undertaken at four sites in the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) for the purpose of evaluating the potential for these sites to yield significant information about the prehistory of the PCMS and to better manage its cultural resources. The work was conducted under a cooperative agreement with the Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC), National Park Service. Three sites are multicomponent historic and prehistoric and the fourth is prehistoric with a historic rock art inscription. Surface mapping, artifact analysis and subsurface testing were implemented at each site. Archival research and geophysical surveys were conducted at two of the historic sites.

Book excerpt: ELECTRONIC FILE CHARACTERISTICS: 30 files; Microsoft Word (.DOC), Microsoft Access (.MDB) and Microsoft Excel (.XLS). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1 hard copy document and 1 CD-ROM; 4 3/4 in.; 10.1 MB. ABSTRACT: In 1996, the Army removed a trailer from the National Register eligible site of Brown's Sheep Camp (5LA5824). Subsequent inspection revealed noticeably disturbed historic deposits, and the Army entered into an Interagency Agreement with MWAC to determine the extent of damage to the site. Overall, backhoe and other digging disturbed 68 square meters of the ground surface around the trailer location, resulting in the exposure of sediments containing late 19th and early 20th century artifacts. Three large piles of dirt and debris (totaling approximately 13 cubic meters of sediment), located nearby, were found to contain similar artifacts. Thirty-nine square meters of excavation units were placed in and around the disturbed areas with the goal of learning about the nature of the disturbance as well as the historic deposits themselves. Two main deposits were located and explored: a shallow midden and a large deep refuse pit. Analyses focused on the pit suggest intense deposition during or after the late 1920s, followed by one or more additional episodes. The assemblage supports interpretations of ranch occupants as focused on sheep production, reliant on self-produced fresh foods (but consuming imported goods as well), and including ranch workers as well as their families.

Book excerpt: During several years of archeological inventory projects, over 100 distinct locations with Late Prehistoric stage architecture have been identified. The present report builds a model for the prediction of hypothetical habitation locations that will provide a basic tool for future archeological inventories in southeastern Colorado/or other areas where hunter-gatherer groups display sedentary tendencies. Using GIS spatial analysis tools, the model is able to predict the location of defensive sites and complex sites with a high degree of accuracy.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between July 25 and November 11, 2000, archaeological investigations were conducted at three sites located on the United States Army Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in southeastern Colorado. The goals of the research were to assess the impact of military traffic on the extant archaeological record of each site and to characterize the subsurface context of archaeological materials within the affected areas. The field research included the excavation of 130 test units, the interpretation of test unit stratigraphic profiles, and the collection of data on surface artifact distribution, temporal/cultural context, and site integrity. Impact from mechanized maneuvers was assessed through surface observation, subsurface context, and soil compaction analysis.

In this book leading researchers update the earlier findings and contribute state-of-the-art reviews and evaluations of technological progress in their areas of expertise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vector-borne infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and plague, cause a significant fraction of the global infectious disease burden; indeed, nearly half of the world's population is infected with at least one type of vector-borne pathogen (CIESIN, 2007; WHO, 2004a). Vector-borne plant and animal diseases, including several newly recognized pathogens, reduce agricultural productivity and disrupt ecosystems throughout the world. These diseases profoundly restrict socioeconomic status and development in countries with the highest rates of infection, many of which are located in the tropics and subtropics. Although this workshop summary provides an account of the individual presentations, it also reflects an important aspect of the Forum philosophy. The workshop functions as a dialogue among representatives from different sectors and allows them to present their beliefs about which areas may merit further attention. These proceedings summarize only the statements of participants in the workshop and are not intended to be an exhaustive exploration of the subject matter or a representation of consensus evaluation. Vector-Borne Diseases : Understanding the Environmental, Human Health, and Ecological Connections, Workshop Summary (Forum on Microbial Threats) summarizes this workshop.

As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail--although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer.

Book excerpt: “A unique, significant contribution to our maturing studies of the Clovis era.”—Gary Haynes, author of The Early Settlement of North America: The Clovis Era The Paleoindian Clovis culture is known for distinctive stone and bone tools often associated with mammoth and bison remains, dating back some 13,500 years. While the term Clovis is known to every archaeology student, few books have detailed the specifics of Clovis archaeology. This collection of essays investigates caches of Clovis tools, many of which have only recently come to light. These caches are time capsules that allow archaeologists to examine Clovis tools at earlier stages of manufacture than the broken and discarded artifacts typically recovered from other sites. The studies comprising this volume treat methodological and theoretical issues including the recognition of Clovis caches, Clovis lithic technology, mobility, and land use.
