Book excerpt: In the summer of 1996 New Mexico State University under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and the United States Army conducted archaeological research consisting of subsurface testing and mapping of 11 sites in Welsh Canyon at the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site in southeastern Colorado. Artifacts and ecofacts recovered from the investigated sites indicate that subsistence was rather mixed with good evidence for both plant processing and the hunting of small mammals. Palynological analysis indicates that the climate from about A.D. 950 to A.D. 1200 was somewhat more arid than the climate in the previous period. This period of mild moisture stress appears to be associated with an increase in population, a diversification of subsistence practices and raw material used in the production of chipped stone tools, and an increase in trade and exchange.

By the late 1800s, the region was U.S. territory, but the majority of settlers remained Hispanic families. They had a complex history of interaction with indigenous populations in the area and adopted many of the indigenous methods of survival in this difficult environment. Today their descendants compose a vocal part of the Hispanic population of Colorado. Bonnie J. Clark investigates the unwritten history of this unique Hispanic population. Combining archaeological research, contemporary ethnography, and oral and documentary history, Clark examines the everyday lives of this population over time. Framing this discussion within the wider context of the changing economic and political processes at work, Clark looks at how changing and contesting ethnic and gender identities were experienced on a daily basis. Providing new insights into the construction of ethnic identity in the American West over hundreds of years, this study complicates and enriches our understanding of the role of Hispanic populations in the West.

Book excerpt: During a 5,793 acre archaeological survey at the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, Las Animas County, Colorado, 112 sites and 77 isolated artifacts were identified. The Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site is a large military base used by the United States Army as a maneuver area for mechanized tracked and wheeled vehicles. Live-fire training occurs within two large ranges on a periodic basis. Most sites are cultural material scatters or places where fragments of chipped-stone flaking debris, chipped-stone tools, or ground-stone tools are exposed on the modern ground surface. Nearly a quarter of the project sites, however, contain the remnants of stone houses such as tipi rings or Apishapa phase architectural units. Most of the projects sites were found along canyon edges where access to food and non-food resources was good. The types of artifacts identified by archaeologists at these locations indicate canyon areas were utilized from the Paleoindian stage to the historic period.

Book excerpt: In Ground in Stone: Landscape, Social Identity, and Ritual Space on the High Plains, Elizabeth Lynch examines the insights and challenges of bedrock ground stone research in archaeological inquiry. Ground in Stone includes analyses of case studies to illustrate field data collection techniques as well as the rich social lives of ground in stone on the Chaquaqua Plateau. Lynch argues that the bedrock features in southeastern Colorado offer valuable insight into the archaeology of the High Plains because they are spaces where people gathered to craft important products—food, tools, and art. In doing so, these places anchored human movement to the landscape and became integral to story-telling and cultural lifeways.

Book excerpt: This document and four parallel volumes, which collectively cover the entire state of Colorado, have been prepared by various organizations under contract to the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists. The respective regions addressed by the five documents are defined according to hydrologic criteria and coincide with the four major drainage basins within the state: Colorado River, Rio Grande, South Platte River, and Arkansas River. The headwaters of these four great rivers occur within the state of the Continental Divide. Becuase of the sheer size of the area, and also due to various cultural considerations, the Colorado River watershed has been divided into upper (northern) and lower (southern) regions, and thus fiver rather than four documents have been generated.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 2003, evaluative testing was undertaken at four sites in the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) for the purpose of evaluating the potential for these sites to yield significant information about the prehistory of the PCMS and to better manage its cultural resources. The work was conducted under a cooperative agreement with the Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC), National Park Service. Three sites are multicomponent historic and prehistoric and the fourth is prehistoric with a historic rock art inscription. Surface mapping, artifact analysis and subsurface testing were implemented at each site. Archival research and geophysical surveys were conducted at two of the historic sites.

Book excerpt: Eight archeological sites on the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site were excavated and evaluated for potential nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in the summer of 1994. These sites date from the first millennium B.C. to the Historic Period. The sites show evidence for use of different environmental zones in the PCMS through a wide spectrum hunting-and-gathering subsistence strategy, as well as the use of local lithic resources. The evaluative work at these sites, supplemented by specialized pollen analysis, as well as radiocarbon and obsidian hydration dating assays, contributes to our understanding of the archaeology not only of the PCMS but of southeastern Colorado in general.

Book excerpt: A 1992 remote sensing survey by the lnteragency Archeological Services Division at the Brown's Sheep Camp site (5LA5824) located three anomalies which were interpreted to have potential as cultural features. Following up on this survey, archeologists and an architectural historian from the NPS Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC) returned to the Site in 1995. The purposes of the study were threefold: (1) determine whether the anomalies were of cultural derivation; (2) further document the standing structures to aid the U.S. Army in future preservation efforts at the site: and (3) determine whether evidence existed to allow an association of site structures with the 1870s era Hogback Stage Station. Results of this work proved two of three remote sensing anomalies to he associated with structures the third being of unknown origin. The architectural survey however, did locate structural and construction features which identified an adobe structure as constructed circa 1884 to the late 1890s. This temporal affiliation allows the building to be associated at a minimum with the early ranching era at Brown's Sheep Camp. Archeological investigations were unable to provide evidence for the site being utilized as a stage Station.

Book excerpt: Across the western United States there are numerous landforms known as Black Hills, or Black Buttes. These tree-covered areas located adjacent to open plains, appear black on the horizon. This setting of open steppes and juxtaposed hills is found along the eastern portion of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS), a U.S. Army training facility in southeastern Colorado. Archaeologists searching in the PCMS Black Hills found 325 sites of former hunting and gathering cultures. These sites contained artifacts ranging in age from 8000 to 9000 year-old Paleo-Indian remains to those left by 300 to 400 year-old Protohistoric Plains Indian tribes. Archaeologists discovered a pattern to the sites. Those with projectile points and hide scrapers reflecting hunting activities were found on the west-end, and overlooked the grass-covered steppes. Sites with manos and metates, evidence for plant processing, were found along the northern side where they offered access to edible plant communities. Sites with numerous chipped-stone flakes were located on the east portion, where there is access to natural out-crops of cherts and quartzites. The numerous sites and long period of use in the Black Hills attest to the popularity of the juniper and pine covered area for hunting and gathering cultures.
