Book Synopsis Marine Natural Products V2 by : Poul Schever
Download or read book Marine Natural Products V2 written by Poul Schever and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Natural Products: Chemical and Biological Perspectives, Volume II, reviews the state of knowledge in the chemistry and biology of marine natural products. It attempts to bring together timely and critical reviews that are representative of major current researches and that, hopefully, will also foreshadow future trends. The first three chapters of this volume deal with marine carotenoids, steroids, and diterpenoids. This is followed by a chapter that examines a single phylum, the Coelenterata, and its metabolites. The Coelenterata is an almost exclusively marine phylum of some 9000 described living species. Research predicts that the coelenterates will yield a rich harvest of organic metabolites. The final chapter, which focuses on 13C NMR spectroscopy for structural elucidation, reveals the power of this instrumental method especially when applied to the difficult problems of polyhalogenated marine metabolites.

Book Synopsis The Physiology of Insecta V5 by : Morris Rockstein
Download or read book The Physiology of Insecta V5 written by Morris Rockstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Insecta, Second Edition, Volume V, is part of a multivolume treatise that brings together the known facts, the controversial material, and the many unresolved and unsettled problems of insect physiology. It features chapters written by the outstanding workers in each of a wide range of insect function areas. It is designed to meet a manifest need, which has arisen from the phenomenal increase in research activity on insects, for an authoritative, comprehensive reference work in insect physiology. The book begins with a discussion of insect nutrition. This is followed by separate chapters on the physiology of digestion and absorption; the factors affecting insect heart rates; the electrical properties of the insect heart; and the hemocytes of insects. Subsequent chapters cover the physiological role and the adaptive significance of the main biochemical constituents of insect hemolymph; salt and water balance in insects; defense reactions in insects; and microsomal mixed-function oxidases.

Download or read book Avian Biology written by Donald S. Farner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avian Biology, Volume II is a collection of papers that deals with the biology of birds such as their integumentary and respiratory systems. One paper describes the integument of birds that includes the skin, feathers, pterylosis, skin muscles, and other integumentary derivatives such as beaks, comb, claws, and spurs. The book explains the process of molting and the different generations of feathers; such molting is dependent on the wear and tear of the plumage, as well as hormonal changes. One author compares the blood vascular system of birds and mammals, and then gives a detailed description of avian hematology. Other papers deal with the respiratory functions, digestive system, and the nutritional needs of birds. Of interest is one author's description of the production of nutritive fluids, holocrine, which is secreted for the young. This secreted fluid contains about 23 percent protein, 10 percent fat, and no sugar. Unlike mammalian milk, it also contains cells. Another paper examines the intermediary metabolism of birds and the climatic effects on metabolism. This book is suitable for bird enthusiasts, zoologists, and avian biologists.

Download or read book Mollusca written by Marcel Florkin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Zoology, Volume VII, Mollusca, provides zoologists and chemists with an overview of the state of knowledge in chemistry and zoology and an introduction to the existing literature. The treatise is arranged by phyla, an arrangement which seemed most suitable for presenting chemical information of zoological significance and for bringing to the attention of chemists those aspects of biochemical diversity of greatest potential interest. Each section, dealing with a major phylum, is introduced by a discussion of the biology and systematics of the group. This is followed by chapters dealing with various aspects of the biochemistry of the group. This volume contains 14 chapters and begins with a discussion of the molluscan framework. This is followed by separate chapters on shell structure and formation, respiratory proteins, and nitrogen metabolism in molluscs. Subsequent chapters deal with molluscan byssus fibers, chemical embryology, pigments, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and distribution, endocrinology, anisosmotic and isosmotic cellular regulation, pharmacology, and biochemical ecology.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Stable Strontium by : Stanley Skoryna
Download or read book Handbook of Stable Strontium written by Stanley Skoryna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two hundred years ago Crawford and Cruickshank, surgeons and chemists in the Royal Artillery, reported the occurrence of a "new earth" in the mines at the Scottish village of Strontian. Humphrey Davy, following the advice of Berzelius, isolated stable strontium in 1808 along with other alkali earth metals. It was not until 1883 that physiological effects of stable strontium were first recognized by none other than Sidney Ringer in his experiments on frog heart. The medicinal use of strontium salts was first described in Squire's Companion in 1894. Subsequently, strontium was introduced into the Pharma copeias of Great Britain, United States, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Mexico and was used in treatment of a variety of disease. s, clearly without detailed knowledge of its actions. It is hoped that this handbook will provide a sound basis for further research on stable strontium and the establishment of the levels of intake, necessary or desirable, in different pathophysiological conditions. The objective of this publication was to assemble a comprehensive collection of essays on stable strontium which review the respective areas of research as well as present original data. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to work with the contributors of these essays. It is obvious that this type of book should be interdisciplinary in nature owing to the necessity of examining each subject from the viewpoint of different disciplines.

Book Synopsis Cholinesterases and Anticholinesterase Agents by : George B. Koelle
Download or read book Cholinesterases and Anticholinesterase Agents written by George B. Koelle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the anticholinesterase (anti-ChE) agents have only limited applica tions in therapy, and from the viewpoint of practical significance they are more appropriately classified as toxic compounds or insecticides than as drugs, in their capacity of pharmacological tools they have few equals. The concept of neuro humoral transmission was originally established largely from experiments in which physostigmine, or eserine, was employed to protect acetylcholine (ACh), the trans mitter of the cholinergic nerves, from rapid hydrolytic destruction by acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and other cholinesterases (ChE's). Since then, a great num ber of additional reversible and irreversible anti-ChE agents also have been indis pensable in studies of synaptic and neuroeffector transmission, and of other physiological processes. At the same time, there is practically no other class of compounds for which a mechanism of pharmacological action can be described in such concrete biochemical and physiological terms. Consequently, it is not sur prising that a huge literature has developed on these several closely interdependent topics. The assembling anrl proper correlation of this material for the present volume has taken the collaborative efforts of over two dozen . investigators. It iR believed that their contributions to this end will prove invaluable to future in vestigators in providing a ready, inclusive source of established information, in defining areas where further studies are indicated, and in preventing unnecessary duplication of past work. How well these aims have been accomplished will be for time and the reader to judge.

Book Synopsis The Principles of Insect Physiology by : Vincent B. Wigglesworth
Download or read book The Principles of Insect Physiology written by Vincent B. Wigglesworth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 832 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSECTS PROVIDE an ideal medium in which to study all the problems of physiology. But if this medium is to be used to the best advantage, the principles and peculiarities of the insect's organization must be first appreciated. It is the purpose of this book to set forth these principles so far as they are understood at the present day. There exist already many excellent text-books of general ento mology; notably those of Imms, Weber, and Snodgrass, to mention only the more recent. But these authors have necessarily been preoccupied chiefly with describing the diversity of form among insects; discussions on function being correspondingly condensed. In the present work the emphasis is reversed. Struc ture is described only to an extent sufficient to make the physiological argument intelligible. Every anatomical peculiarity, every ecological specialization, has indeed its physiological counterpart. In that sense, anatomy, physiology and ecology are not separable. But regarded from the standpoint from which the present work is written, the endless modifications that are met with among insects are but illustrations of the general principles of their physiology, which it is the aim of this book to set forth. Completeness in such a work is not possible, or desirable; but an endeavour has been made to illustrate each physiological characteristic by a few concrete examples, and to include sufficient references to guide the student to the more important sources. The physiology of insects is to some the handmaid of Economic Entomology.
