Book Synopsis Primitive Motile Systems In Cell Biology by : Robert Aleen
Download or read book Primitive Motile Systems In Cell Biology written by Robert Aleen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primitive Motile Systems in Cell Biology is a collection of papers presented at the Symposium on the Mechanism of Cytoplasmic Streaming, Cell Movement, and the Saltatory Motion of Subcellular Particles, held at Princeton University in April 1963. The participants in the symposium represent various fields of science, brought together to consider how movement occurs at the cell level and below. This volume is organized into four sections encompassing 36 chapters and begins with an overview of cytoplasmic streaming in plants and Myxomycetes (Mycetozoa), including topics ranging from the organization of movement in slime mold Plasmodia to the mechanochemical system behind streaming in Physarum. The next section discusses cytoplasmic streaming and locomotion in the free-living amoeba, with chapters exploring relative motion in Amoeba proteus and mechanisms of amoeboid movement based on dynamic organization. This volume also discusses cytoplasmic streaming, locomotion, and behavior of specialized amoeboid cells. The book concludes with an analysis of non-Brownian and saltatory motion of subcellular particles, along with mitotic movements. This book is intended for scientists and students of the biological, biophysical, and medical sciences who are interested in the movements in and of living cells.
Book Synopsis Advances in Morphogenesis by : M. Abercrombie
Download or read book Advances in Morphogenesis written by M. Abercrombie and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Morphogenesis, Volume 3 covers the significant advances in various aspects of morphogenesis. This volume is divided into nine chapters that specifically consider the histochemical, morphological, and biochemical aspects of cell growth and development in various animal groups. The opening chapter deals with the different mechanisms of determination in the development of the gastropods. The next chapters present the model system for biochemical of morphological differentiation, including non-filamentous aquatic fungi and sea urchin. These topics are followed by discussions of the results obtained from chick embryo erythrocyte during the entire prenatal period, with emphasis on the problems of autodifferentiation of chick embryo blood corpuscles. A chapter examines the role of DNA, RNA, and sulfhydryl groups in morphogenesis in amphibians and regeneration in the unicellular alga, Acetabularia mediterranea. The concluding chapters describe the relationship between cleavage, relative duration of developmental periods, and cell differentiation in stages of embryonic development. These chapters also look into the positive evidence concerning the morphogenetic role of the egg cortex of the amphibians. This book is directed primarily to developmental biologists.
Book Synopsis Cell Growth and Cell Division by : R. J. C. Harris
Download or read book Cell Growth and Cell Division written by R. J. C. Harris and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Growth and Cell Division is a collection of papers dealing with the biochemical and cytological aspects of cell development and changes in bacterial, plant, and animal systems. One paper discusses studies on the nuclear and cytoplasmic growth of ten different strains of the genus Blepharisma, in which different types of nutrition at high and low temperatures alter the species to the extent that they became morphologically indistinguishable. The paper describes the onset of death at high and low temperatures as being preceded by a decrease in the size of the cytoplasm and a corresponding decrease in the size of the macronucleus. The moribund organisms, still possessing structure, are motionless with no distinguishable macronuclear materials. Another paper presents the response of meiotic and mitotic cells to azaguanine, chloramphenicol, ethionine, and 5-methyltryptophan. The paper describes the failure of spindle action, arrest of second division, inhibition of cytokinesis, aberrant wall synthesis, and alterations in chromosome morphology in meiosis cells. In the case of mitosis, a single enzyme—thymidine phosphorylase—shows that reagents which inhibit protein synthesis also inhibit the appearance of that enzyme if the reagent is applied one day before it normally appears. Other papers discuss control mechanisms for chromosome reproduction in the cell cycle, as well as the force of cleavage of the dividing sea urchin egg. The collection can prove valuable for bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, and developmental biologists.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology by : A. Davies
Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology written by A. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology considers many aspects of thymus dependency in order to exemplify the role of the thy mus in different species and different immunological responses. It is not in tended to be a compendium of the responses which have been shown to be thymus dependent but rather to illustrate for the reader the criteria he should apply in thinking about the significance of the thymus in immune responses. We are grateful to the editors and publishers of the Annals of the New York Academy of Science, the Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, Clinical and Experimental Immunology, Immunology, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the Journal of Immunology, Laboratory Investigation, Nature, and the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine and to Springer-Verlag, Berlin, for permission to reproduce illustrations. Specific references are given in the text. We would also like to thank the contributors for their time and energy and willingness to submit to the editorial red pencils. The exercise of these censori ous instruments meant that the manuscripts had to be reorganized and retyped. Mrs. J. Pettis, Mrs. A. Inglefield, and Miss M. Butt all helped, and we are most grateful to them. A.J.S.D. R.L.e.

Book excerpt: Chemical Zoology, Volume VI, Arthropoda Part B, provides zoologists and chemists with an overview of the state of knowledge in chemistry and zoology and an introduction to the existing literature. The treatise is arranged by phyla, an arrangement which seemed most suitable for presenting chemical information of zoological significance and for bringing to the attention of chemists those aspects of biochemical diversity of greatest potential interest. Each section, dealing with a major phylum, is introduced by a discussion of the biology and systematics of the group. This is followed by chapters dealing with various aspects of the biochemistry of the group. This volume contains 11 chapters that discuss the integument, hemolymph, blood respiratory pigments, hemolymph coagulation excretion, pigments, chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology of Arthropoda. The respiration, energy metabolism, and chemical ecology of Crustacea as well as the oxidative metabolism of Insecta are also covered.

Book Synopsis Biological Regulation and Development by : Robert F. Goldberger
Download or read book Biological Regulation and Development written by Robert F. Goldberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for us to conceive this work on regulation was mainly our belief that it would be fun, and at the same time productive, to approach the subject in a way that differs from that of other treatises. We thought it might be interesting and instructive-for both author and reader-to examine a particular area of investigation in a framework of many different problems. Cutting across the traditional boundaries that have separated the sub jects in past volumes on regulation is not an easy thing to do-not because it is difficult to think of what interesting topics should replace the old ones, but because it is difficult to find authors who are willing to write about areas outside those pursued in their own laborato ries. Anyone who takes on the task of reviewing a broad area of interest must weave together its various parts by picking up the threads from many different laboratories, and attempt to produce a fabric with a meaningful design. Finding persons who are likely to succeed in such tasks was the most difficult part of our job. In the first volume of this treatise, most of the chapters dealt with the mechanisms of regulation of gene expression in microorganisms. This second volume involves a somewhat broader area, spanning the prokaryotic-eukaryotic border.
