Zweck der in Cod.icon. 138-140 enthaltenen Karten war die Eröffnung neuer Handelsverbindungen für das Großherzogtum Toskana und der Name "Arcano del mare" deutet die angesichts von Konkurrenz und seefahrerischer Gefährdung gebotene Geheimhaltung der Routen an. Seit seiner Flucht aus England im Jahr 1606 an den Hof Ferdinands I. stand Robert Dudley in Diensten der Großherzöge. Für Ferdinand II. (1621-1670) erforschte er die Neue Welt und betrieb den für den Seehandel der Medici und die Küstensicherheit so entscheidenden Ausbau von Livorno als befestigtem Hafen und Schiffswerft (siehe die Schiffs- und Hafenentwürfe in Cod.icon. 221 ). Bemerkenswert ist die Lebendigkeit der Darstellung (Europa und Asien) und die Informationsvielfalt der handschriftlichen Fassung. Die in feiner Kalligraphie direkt in die Kartenzeichnung eingetragenen geographischen Bezeichnungen, kartographietechnischen (Längen und Breiten) und nautischen Hinweise (gefährliche Winde, empfohlene Reisezeit) sind der Schrift des Graphikers der Druckausgabe Antonio Francesco Lucini (1610-nach 1661 verwandt, ebenso wie die Schrift der meisten Textseiten mit allgemeinen Kartenerklärungen.
