Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On first acquaintance the electric arc discharge appears to be both visually attractive and a relatively simple phenomena to understand. To those of us engaged in prolonged study of this discharge, it remains a constantly exciting phenomena but we become only too aware of its complex nature and the difficulties in interpreting its bulk properties. This is particu larly true when the arc exists in a practical device and is subjected therefore to extreme conditions. In recent years the possibilities for the beginning of a fuller understanding of the complexities of the arc has arisen out of the excellent research and development work of scientists and engineers throughout the world. Much of this work has been stimulated not only by the need for the development of practical devices but also by the interest in thermonuclear fusion, mag netohydrodynamic generation and space exploration. In much of this work, the arc discharge has been a common feature as a source of study of high temperature plasma. As a result of this increased interest in the arc, the expert and would-be expert is now faced with the problem of assessing extensive newly published information on arc properties. Thus there is the need for texts which present to the engineer and researcher a review and summary of the present situation. This book is a valuable contribution to this task.

Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the electric arc characteristics, particularly those that are important for welding applications. This more scientific approach intends to provide insights for a better understanding of the phenomena that control the behavior of an arc welding process. The text aims to emphasize physical phenomena that are important to arc welding, not dealing with technological, industrial or metallurgical aspects of welding. Among other topics, the following topics are included in this manuscript: heat sources for fusion welding, electric discharges in gases, arc evaluation techniques, electric arc profile, metal transfer, wire melting rate and process stability.

Book excerpt: Vacuum circuit breakers are widely used in distribution power systems for their advantages such as maintenance free and eco-friendly. Nowadays, most circuit breakers used at transmission voltage level are SF6 circuit breakers, but the SF6 they emit is one of the six greenhouse gases defined in Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, the development of transmission voltage level vacuum circuit breaker can help the environment. The switching arc phenomena in transmission voltage level vacuum circuit breakers are key issues to explore. This book focuses on the high-current vacuum arcs phenomena at transmission voltage level, especially on the anode spot phenomena, which significantly influence the success or failure of the short circuit current interruption. Then, it addresses the dielectric recovery property in current interruption. Next it explains how to determine the closing/opening displacement curve of transmission voltage level vacuum circuit breakers based on the vacuum arc phenomena. After that, it explains how to determine key design parameters for vacuum interrupters and vacuum circuit breakers at transmission voltage level. At the end, the most challenging issue for vacuum circuit breakers, capacitive switching in vacuum, is addressed. The contents of this book will benefit researchers and engineers in the field of power engineering, especially in the field of power circuit breakers and power switching technology.

This new book provides a survey-oriented account of the modeling, sensing, and automatic control of the GMAW process.Researchers are presented with the most recent information in the areas of modeling, sensing and automatic control of the GMAW process, collecting a number of original research results on the topic from the authors and colleagues. Providing an overview of a variety of topics, this book looks at the classification of various welding processes; the modeling aspects of GMAW; physics of welding; metal transfer characteristics; weld pool geometry; process voltages and variables; power supplies; sensing (sensors for arc length, weld penetration control, weld pool geometry, using optical and intelligent sensors); control techniques of PI, PID, multivariable control, adaptive control, and intelligent control. Finally, the book illustrates a case study presented by the authors and their students at Idaho State University, in collaboration with researchers at the Idaho National Engineering and Environment Laboratory.

Book excerpt: Not merely a discussion of small particles or clusters of atoms, molecules, but also the systems they constitute. The goal is to analyse the properties of such finite aggregates and their behaviour in gases and plasmas, and to investigate processes that involve such clusters, based on lectures and seminar problems for graduates. The main part of the book includes more than 200 problems, covering collisions, charge transfer, chemical reactions, condensed systems and their structures, kinetics of cluster growth, excited clusters, the transition from clusters to bulk particles, and small particles, dust, and aerosols in plasmas. Reference data for corresponding parameters of systems under consideration is given in the appendices. Of interest to physicists, astrophysicists, and chemists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic arcs are among the longest studied yet least understood objects in science. Plasma-generating, tiny spots appear on the cathode; they are highly dynamic and hard to control. With an approach emphasizing the fractal character of cathode spots, strongly fluctuating plasma properties are described such as the presence of multiply charged ions that move with supersonic velocity. Richly illustrated, the book also deals with practical issues, such as arc source construction, macroparticle removal, and the synthesis of dense, well adherent coatings. The book spans a bridge from plasma physics to coatings technology based on energetic condensation, appealing to scientists, practitioners and graduate students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a thorough investigation of the physics and applications of the vacuum arc – a highly-ionized metallic plasma source used in a number of applications – with emphasis on cathode spot phenomena and plasma formation. The goal is to understand the origins and behavior of the various complex and sometimes mysterious phenomena involved in arc formation, such as cathode spots, electrode vaporization, and near-electrode plasma formation. The book takes the reader from a model of dense cathode plasma based on charge-exchange ion-atom collisions through a kinetic approach to cathode vaporization and on to metal thermophysical properties of cathodes. This picture is further enhanced by an in-depth study of cathode jets and plasma acceleration, the effects of magnetic fields on cathode spot behavior, and electrical characteristics of arcs and cathode spot dynamics. The book also describes applications to space propulsion, thin film deposition, laser plasma generation, and magnetohydrodynamics, making this comprehensive and up-to-date volume a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry.

Part I describes basic physics of the vacuum arc, beginning with a brief tutorial review of plasma and electrical discharge physics, then describes the arc ignition process, cathode and anode spots which serve as the locus for plasma generation, and resultant interelectrode plasma. Part II describes the applications of the vacuum arc for depositing thin films and coatings, refining metals, switching high power, and as sources of intense electron, ion, plasma, and x-ray beams.
