Book Synopsis Buildings and Classical Groups by : Paul B. Garrett
Download or read book Buildings and Classical Groups written by Paul B. Garrett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings are highly structured, geometric objects, primarily used in the finer study of the groups that act upon them. In Buildings and Classical Groups, the author develops the basic theory of buildings and BN-pairs, with a focus on the results needed to apply it to the representation theory of p-adic groups. In particular, he addresses spherical and affine buildings, and the "spherical building at infinity" attached to an affine building. He also covers in detail many otherwise apocryphal results. Classical matrix groups play a prominent role in this study, not only as vehicles to illustrate general results but as primary objects of interest. The author introduces and completely develops terminology and results relevant to classical groups. He also emphasizes the importance of the reflection, or Coxeter groups and develops from scratch everything about reflection groups needed for this study of buildings. In addressing the more elementary spherical constructions, the background pertaining to classical groups includes basic results about quadratic forms, alternating forms, and hermitian forms on vector spaces, plus a description of parabolic subgroups as stabilizers of flags of subspaces. The text then moves on to a detailed study of the subtler, less commonly treated affine case, where the background concerns p-adic numbers, more general discrete valuation rings, and lattices in vector spaces over ultrametric fields. Buildings and Classical Groups provides essential background material for specialists in several fields, particularly mathematicians interested in automorphic forms, representation theory, p-adic groups, number theory, algebraic groups, and Lie theory. No other available source provides such a complete and detailed treatment.

Book Synopsis In Search of the Riemann Zeros by : Michel Laurent Lapidus
Download or read book In Search of the Riemann Zeros written by Michel Laurent Lapidus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulated in 1859, the Riemann Hypothesis is the most celebrated and multifaceted open problem in mathematics. In essence, it states that the primes are distributed as harmoniously as possible--or, equivalently, that the Riemann zeros are located on a single vertical line, called the critical line.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Geometry by : Hung-Hsi Wu
Download or read book Contemporary Geometry written by Hung-Hsi Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early one morning in April of 1987, the Chinese mathematician J. -Q. Zhong died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York. He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other two in that it gives a firsthand account of the work done in the People's Republic of China in several complex variables in the last four decades.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Buildings by : Mark Ronan
Download or read book Lectures on Buildings written by Mark Ronan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mathematics, “buildings” are geometric structures that represent groups of Lie type over an arbitrary field. This concept is critical to physicists and mathematicians working in discrete mathematics, simple groups, and algebraic group theory, to name just a few areas. Almost twenty years after its original publication, Mark Ronan’s Lectures on Buildings remains one of the best introductory texts on the subject. A thorough, concise introduction to mathematical buildings, it contains problem sets and an excellent bibliography that will prove invaluable to students new to the field. Lectures on Buildings will find a grateful audience among those doing research or teaching courses on Lie-type groups, on finite groups, or on discrete groups. “Ronan’s account of the classification of affine buildings [is] both interesting and stimulating, and his book is highly recommended to those who already have some knowledge and enthusiasm for the theory of buildings.”—Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society
Download or read book Collected works written by Jacques Tits and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Tits was awarded the Wolf Prize in 1993 and the Abel Prize (jointly with John Thompson) in 2008. The impact of his contributions in algebra, group theory and geometry made over a span of more than five decades is incalculable. Many fundamental developments in several fields of mathematics have their origin in ideas of Tits. A number of Tits' papers mark the starting point of completely new directions of research. Outstanding examples are papers on quadratic forms, on Kac-Moody groups and on what subsequently became known as the Tits alternative. These volumes contain an almost complete collection of Tits' mathematical writings. They include, in particular, a number of published and unpublished manuscripts which have not been easily accessible until now. This collection of Tits' contributions in one place makes the evolution of his mathematical thinking visible. The development of his theory of buildings and BN-pairs and its bearing on the theory of algebraic groups, for example, reveal a fascinating story. Along with Tits' mathematical writings, these volumes contain biographical data, survey articles on aspects of Tits' work, and comments by the editors on the content of some of his papers. With the publication of these volumes, a major piece of 20th-century mathematics is being made available to a wider audience.

A large number of applications are also included, such as an analytic proof of Kodaira's embedding theorem, a solution of the Grauert-Riemenschneider and Shiffman conjectures, compactification of complete Kähler manifolds of pinched negative curvature, Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, weak Lefschetz theorems, and asymptotics of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion.
Book Synopsis Invariant Theory by : Sebastian S. Koh
Download or read book Invariant Theory written by Sebastian S. Koh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of expository papers is the outgrowth of a conference in combinatorics and invariant theory. In recent years, newly developed techniques from algebraic geometry and combinatorics have been applied with great success to some of the outstanding problems of invariant theory, moving it back to the forefront of mathematical research once again. This collection of papers centers on constructive aspects of invariant theory and opens with an introduction to the subject by F. Grosshans. Its purpose is to make the current research more accesssible to mathematicians in related fields.
