Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab revolutions of 2011 were a transformative moment in the modern history of the Middle East, as people rose up against long-standing autocrats throughout the region to call for 'bread, freedom and dignity'. With the passage of time, results have been decidedly mixed, with tentative success stories like Tunisia contrasting with the emergence of even more repressive dictatorships in places like Egypt, with the backing of several Gulf states. Focusing primarily on Egypt, this book considers a relatively understudied dimension of these revolutions: the role of prominent religious scholars. While pro-revolutionary ulama have justified activism against authoritarian regimes, counter-revolutionary scholars have provided religious backing for repression, and in some cases the mass murder of unarmed protestors. Usaama al-Azami traces the public engagements and religious pronouncements of several prominent ulama in the region, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Ali Gomaa and Abdullah bin Bayyah, to explore their role in either championing the Arab revolutions or supporting their repression. He concludes that while a minority of noted scholars have enthusiastically endorsed the counter-revolutions, their approach is attributable less to premodern theology and more to their distinctly modern commitment to the authoritarian state.

Drawing on a contrastive-comparative approach, it analyses parallel authentic legal documents in both Arabic and English to examine the features of legal discourse in both languages and uncover the different translation techniques used. In so doing, it addresses the following questions: What are the features of English and Arabic legal texts? What are the similarities and differences of English and Arabic legal texts? What are the difficult areas of legal translation between English and Arabic legal texts? What are the techniques for translating these difficult areas on the lexical and syntactic levels? Features include: A thorough description of the features of legal translation in both English and Arabic, drawing on empirical new research, corpus data analysis and strategic two-way comparisons between source texts and target texts Coverage of a broad range of topics including an outline of the chosen framework for data analysis, a historical survey of legal discourse developments in both Arabic and English and detailed analyses of legal literature at both the lexical and syntactic levels Attention to common areas of difficulty such as Shariah Law terms, archaic terms and model auxiliaries Many examples and excerpts from a wide selection of authentic legal documents, reinforced by practical discussion points, exercises and practice drills to encourage active engagement with the material and opportunities for hands-on learning. Wide-ranging, scholarly and thought-provoking, this will be a valuable resource for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates on Arabic, Translation Studies and Comparative Linguistics courses. It will also be essential reading for translation professionals and researchers working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you always wanted to learn how to speak Classical Arabic (MSA) but simply didn't have the time? Well if so, then, look no further. You can hold in your hands one of the most advanced and revolutionary method that was ever designed for quickly becoming conversational in a language. In creating this time-saving program, master linguist Yatir Nitzany spent years examining the twenty-seven most common languages in the world and distilling from them the three hundred and fifty words that are most likely to be used in real conversations. These three hundred and fifty words were chosen in such a way that they were structurally interrelated and, when combined, form sentences. Through various other discoveries about how real conversations work--discoveries that are detailed further in this book--Nitzany created the necessary tools for linking these words together in a specific way so that you may become rapidly and almost effortlessly conversant--now. If your desire is to learn complicated grammatical rules or to speak perfectly proper and precise Arabic, this book is not for you. However, if you need to actually hold a conversation while on a trip to an Arab speaking country, to impress that certain someone, or to be able to speak with your grandfather or grandmother as soon as possible, then the Nitzany Method is what you have been looking for. This method is designed for fluency in a foreign language, while communicating in the first person present tense. Nitzany believes that what's most important is actually being able to understand and be understood by another human being right away. Therefore, unlike other courses, all words in this program are taught in both the Arabic alphabet as well as English transliteration. More formalized training in grammar rules, etc., can come later. This is one of the several, in a series of instructional language guides, the Nitzany Method's revolutionary approach is the only one in the world that uses its unique language technology to actually enable you to speak and understand native speakers in the shortest amount of time possible. No more depending on volumes of books of fundamental, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, all with hundreds of pages in order to learn a language. With Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy, all you need are sixty-three pages. Learn Modern Standard Arabic today, not tomorrow, and get started now!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Now with a new Epilogue, containing letters of response from Palestinian readers. "A profound and original book, the work of a gifted thinker."--Daphne Merkin, The Wall Street Journal Attempting to break the agonizing impasse between Israelis and Palestinians, the Israeli commentator and award-winning author of Like Dreamers directly addresses his Palestinian neighbors in this taut and provocative book, empathizing with Palestinian suffering and longing for reconciliation as he explores how the conflict looks through Israeli eyes. I call you "neighbor" because I don’t know your name, or anything personal about you. Given our circumstances, "neighbor" might be too casual a word to describe our relationship. We are intruders into each other’s dream, violators of each other’s sense of home. We are incarnations of each other’s worst historical nightmares. Neighbors? Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor is one Israeli’s powerful attempt to reach beyond the wall that separates Israelis and Palestinians and into the hearts of "the enemy." In a series of letters, Yossi Klein Halevi explains what motivated him to leave his native New York in his twenties and move to Israel to participate in the drama of the renewal of a Jewish homeland, which he is committed to see succeed as a morally responsible, democratic state in the Middle East. This is the first attempt by an Israeli author to directly address his Palestinian neighbors and describe how the conflict appears through Israeli eyes. Halevi untangles the ideological and emotional knot that has defined the conflict for nearly a century. In lyrical, evocative language, he unravels the complex strands of faith, pride, anger and anguish he feels as a Jew living in Israel, using history and personal experience as his guide. Halevi’s letters speak not only to his Palestinian neighbor, but to all concerned global citizens, helping us understand the painful choices confronting Israelis and Palestinians that will ultimately help determine the fate of the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you always wanted to learn how to speak Arabic but simply didn't have the time? Look no further. You hold in your hands the most revolutionary method that was ever designed for QUICKLY becoming conversational in a language. In creating this time saving program, master linguist Yatir Nitzany spent nearly three years examining the 27 most common languages in the world and distilling from them the 350 words that are most likely to be used in real conversations. Through various other discoveries about how real conservations work, that are detailed further in this book, Nitzany created the necessary tools for linking these words together in a specific way to become fluent NOW. If your desire is to learn complicated grammatical rules, or to speak Shakespearean Arabic, this book is NOT for you. However, if you need to actually hold a conversation whilst on a trip to an Arab speaking country, to impress that certain someone, or to be able to speak with your grandfather or grandmother as soon as possible, then the Nitzany Method is what you have been looking for. This book is recommended for those who already have prior knowledge in pronunciation of Arabic accents (such as the Arabic accents: "ayin," "ghayn," "ha," and "khaf"). For those of you that DO NOT, this book does indeed provide some great, in depth techniques (page #15) as to the pronunciation and recognition of these accents that you will encounter throughout the program. Also in Arabic the endings of certain words change slightly depending on different cases, however this program will NOT teach you these skills. The purpose of this book is for conversational use ONLY, in regards to grammar, conjugation, and pronunciation you are on your own! This method is designed for fluency in a foreign language, while communicating in the first person. Nitzany believes that what's most important is actually being able to understand and be understood by another human being right away. Therefore, unlike other courses, all words in this program are taught in English transliteration, without having to learn a complex foreign alphabet. More formalized training in grammar rules, learning to write in a foreign alphabet, etc. can all come later. The first in a series of instructional language guides, the Nitzany Method's revolutionary approach is the only one in the world that uses it's unique language technology to actually enable you to speak and understand native speakers in the shortest amount of time possible. No more depending on volumes of books of fundamental, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, all with hundreds of pages in order to learn a language. With "Conversational Arabic Quick and Easy" all you need is 45 pages. This book has been proven useful for all level speakers of the Arabic language. Learn Arabic today, not tomorrow, and get started NOW! Note and DISCLAIMER from the Author: I wish to stress this program is by NO means, shape, NOR form a phrase book!! The sole purpose of this book is to give you a fundamental platform to enable you to connect certain words to become conversational. It is a myth that certain people are born with the gifted talent to learn a language and this book disproves that myth. With this method anyone can learn a foreign language as long as you follow these EXPLICIT directions: Memorize the vocabulary on each page (starting page #16), follow it by using a note-card to cover the words you have just memorized and test yourself. Please do NOT skip pages, NOR start from the middle of the book. Then read the sentences below which are created from the vocabulary bank which you just mastered. Once fully memorized, then give yourself the green light to proceed to the next page. IF YOU PROCEED TO THE FOLLOWING PAGE WITHOUT MASTERING THE PREVIOUS, you are guaranteed to fail and to gain nothing from this book. However if you follow the prescribed steps you will realize just how effective this method is.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Arabistic, , language: English, abstract: In this article, I shall consider the organisational principle of turn taking in Moroccan Arabic conversational materials. Granted that the structure of a conversation is essentially interactional, the turn-taking principle is thus- the most likely determinant of this structure. Considering the fact that conversation, by definition, involves two or more persons, the distribution of talk among the participants is not merely random. It is governed by turn-taking norms which determine who talks, when, and for how long. Therefore, it is the aim of this chapter to examine the different aspects of turn-taking.
