Book excerpt: This Reader was developed for use in an intermediate level course for Adeni Arabic. It assumes knowledge of the content of the "Arabic Adeni Textbook" or its equivalent. Its purpose is to present the student with a broader and more specialized vocabulary as well as to provide exposure to the syntax of the dialect. There are variations within Adeni Arabic which correlate with the education level of the speakers. Educated speakers tend to avoid certain colloquial expressions. They shift to more formal language (diglossia) when speaking about political, economic, social, and religious topics. It is often possible to infer, if not the social class, then the degree of education of speakers by the way they speak and the expressions they avoid. This fact had some bearing on the author's choice of native speakers and on the subject matter of the selections. The text of most of the selections is based on field tapes recorded by natives of Aden with different educational and social backgrounds. The selections received some editing for educational purposes. The Reader consists of forty five selections preceded by a transcription and pronunciation system to acquaint the learner with the transcription employed throughout the Reader. The symbols used for the transliteration are the most commonly employed for Arabic dialects. In speech sometimes short vowels are omitted because of elision and assimilation or because of the differences in pronunciation among native speakers. The student should keep this in mind when working with the Reader selections.

Book excerpt: The Textbook is designed to provide the basic conversational and grammatical structures of the Adeni dialect. After the completion of the book, the user will be able to carry on conversations in a wide range of social situations. He will also be able to comprehend language spoken at a normal rate of speed on a variety of subjects. The Textbook consists of an introductory sections on the transcription system, the sound system and useful classroom expressions followed by a series of thirty lessons, five of which are review lessons. Each lesson consists of a dialogue, model sentences, notes, a vocabulary list, drills and situations. The dialogues and model sentences were developed from recordings of spontaneous, unrehearsed conversations of native speakers in various situations, They cover a wide variety of subject matter relevant to day-to-day life in Aden. The dialogues as well as the model sentences are accompanied by parallel English translations. The English translations were kept as close as possible to the Adeni text in order to enable the user to see the relationship between the two. Grammatical and cultural notes have also been provided in order to facilitate a better understanding of the dialect as well as the society in which it is spoken. The vocabulary lists contain grammatical information such as, gender, number, etc. Verbs are listed in the third person singular masculine in both the perfect and imperfect aspects. The drills are designed to provide practice in the use of new vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Book excerpt: Much of the insight in the field of Arabic linguistics has for a long time remained unknown to linguists outside the field. Regrettably, Arabic data rarely feature in the formulation of theories and analytical tools in modern linguistics. This situation is unfavourable to both sides. The Arabist, once an outrider, has almost become a non-member of the mainstream linguistics community. Consequently, linguistics itself has been deprived of a wealth of data from one of the world's major languages. However, it is reassuring to witness advances being made to integrate into mainstream linguistics the visions and debates of specialists in Arabic. Building on this fruitful endeavour, this book presents thought-provoking, new articles, especially written for this collection by leading scholars from both sides. The authors discuss topics in historical, social and spatial dialectology focusing on Arabic data investigated within modern analytical frameworks.

The field is assessed in some 470 essays discussing individuals (Martin Buber, Gluckel of Hameln), literature (Genesis, Ladino Literature), thought and beliefs (Holiness, Bioethics), practice (Dietary Laws, Passover), history (Venice, Baghdadi Jews of India), and arts and material culture (Synagogue Architecture, Costume). The emphasis is on Judaism, rather than on Jewish studies more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Jewish community of the British Crown Colony of Aden, a community which is mistakenly lumped with Yemenite Jewry. It provides a critical assessment of its history; salient dimensions of its sociopolitical, religious, socioeconomic, cultural and intellectual fabric; insights into the unique quintessential traits that determine the place of the Jewish community of Aden as a cultural and spiritual phenomenon within Yemenite and world Jewry. It also affords a glimpse into the relationship between Jews and Muslims in Aden. The volume is based on a study of hundreds of yet unpublished legal texts and documentary material.
