Book excerpt: The book presents the first English edition of Hubertine Auclert's Arab Women in Algeria which offers a unique picture of Algerian society in late 19th century. Hubertine Auclert (1848-1914) was one of the foremost militants for women's political rights in France from the mid-1870s. She lived in Algeria from 1888 to 1892, where she investigated the customs and traditions that defined the condition of women. She witnessed both the exploitation of women and that of the colonized people; in doing so, she drew a picture of colonial Algerian society. While women were mistreated by men (sale of prepubescent girls into marriage, forced marriage, repudiation permitted only to men, polygamy), Arab men were mistreated by the colonial administration and excluded from the government of Algeria. She denounced the contradictions and hypocrisy of French justice, which often enforced, for their own interest, the "anomalies" of Muslim law in contradiction with French law. The last chapter of the book comprises of several striking anecdotes that illustrate the author's theoretical views. Jacqueline Grenez Brovender is a freelance translator and a former lecturer in French at Tufts University. Denise Brahimi-Chapuis taught in French and Algerian universities about the relationship between France and the Maghreb and its effect on women.

Burning the veil draws upon sources from newly-opened archives, exploring the ‘emancipation’ of Muslim women from the veil, seclusion and perceived male oppression during the Algerian War of decolonisation. The claimed French liberation was contradicted by the violence inflicted on women through rape, torture and destruction of villages. This book examines the roots of this contradiction in the theory of ‘revolutionary warfare’, and the attempt to defeat the National Liberation Front by penetrating the Muslim family, seen as a bastion of resistance. Striking parallels with contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq, French ‘emancipation’ produced a backlash that led to deterioration in the social and political position of Muslim women. This analysis of how and why attempts to Westernise Muslim women ended in catastrophe has contemporary relevance and will be important to students and academics engaged in the study of French and colonial history, feminism and contemporary Islam.

But their status cannot be given a single classification. It varies greatly according to the country they live in and the section of society to which they belong.In Saudi Arabia, today women, with few exceptions, still wear the veil and may not meet men other than their nearest relations. The more modernized countries, such as Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia, offer a different picture. There the women of better-off families have a lifestyle broadly comparable with women in Europe. Many are outstanding in public or professional work. In proportion to men, there are more women members of parliament in Sudan than in Britain. Egypt has over 1,000 women doctors and a woman is its senior flying instructor. There are women judges in Lebanon and Algeria. Syrian women engineers worked on the Euphrates dam. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. It is my objective to show that violation s of women's rights in the Middle East are not a result of Islam per se but a consequ ence of experiences that are a part of living in the Middle East. Muslim women are conce rned about their active role in the communities they live in. The experiences of wome n in Iran and Algeria should be analyzed and in order to understand the challenges th at Muslim women face within society and within their faith. In this study, it is my assertion that the violations of women's rights in the Middle East are not a result of Islam as a belief system, but a consequence of l ocal interpretations grounded in social traditions based on kinship. Women are beginn ing to emerge in all dimensions of the social and political scene in Iran and Algeria b y their own will and determination. This is a big change in women's identity in the Musl im world. The outcome of this change would advocate new social outlooks for women i n future generations. The first part of the study takes into consideration how early influences of nationalism and western modernization in Iran and colonialism in Algeria influen ced culture, historical events, and social development, especially their affects on women. The second part is an analysis of the similarities of women's participation in t he Algerian War for Independence and the Iranian Revolution and the consequences thereof affecting women. The third part examines political and social currents i n the respective countries to the extent that they affect the status of women during t he formative stages of Iran as an Islamic state and in post-independence Algeria. T he fourth part will show how Islamic revivalism in Algeria and Iran has affected wo men's lives in both countries. This part of the analysis will take a look at how Islam in light of the latest resurgence affects women's lives.
