Book excerpt: Aquaman learns from an Atlantean doctor that Mera, who is about to deliver his child, will be doomed by a hereditary disease that runs in AquamanÕs family (as will the baby) if she does not receive an antidote made from an anemone root in the Gulf of Terrors, far from Atlantis. The Sea King and Aqualad complete a perilous odyssey to the gulf and get the antidote from an exiled criminal of Atlantis, Sinquo. Mera receives the antidote in time and safely bears their son, Arthur Curry Jr., alias ÒAquababy.Ó However, Aquababy has been given strange powers by the serum, which threaten Atlantis. Aquaman opines that Sinquo added something to the serum that gave his son the out-of-control powers. The Atlanteans demand that Aquababy be taken away from the city, and Aquaman, Mera, Aqualad and Aquababy go into exile. But when the mutant Horrkas attack the family, Aquababy blasts them away, exhausting his powers in the process. Thus, Aquaman and his family are able to return to Atlantis.

Book excerpt: Apretty impressive title, but over the years perhaps no other major DC character has moved through so many titles and gone through so many retoolings and relaunches. He first appeared in a backup feature in more fun comics #73 (November 1941), moved on to adventure comics in 1946 for a long run, and then popped up for a brief run in detective comics (July 1961) and world's finest Comics (May 1962). He was a charter member of the Justice League of America (not to mention the Super Friends!) and has had two of his own titles and three limited series. He has even had two completely different origins. A pretty busy guy, and it certainly isn't over yet! The stories presented in this Archive Edition mark one of Aquaman's true high points, beginning with the story where he really entered the Silver Age of comics -- a story that just happens to contain a revised origin. Volume One of the aquaman archives showcases over twenty underwater adventures by some of DC's finest writers, and features art by one of the all-too-few female stars of comics, Ramona Fradon. So come on in, the water's fine! Book jacket.

Book excerpt: After debuting in 1938, Superman soon became an American icon. But why has he maintained his iconic status for nearly 80 years? And how can he still be an American icon when the country itself has undergone so much change? Superman: Persistence of an American Icon examines the many iterations of the character in comic books, comic strips, radio series, movie serials, feature films, television shows, animation, toys, and collectibles over the past eight decades. Demonstrating how Superman’s iconic popularity cannot be attributed to any single creator or text, comics expert Ian Gordon embarks on a deeper consideration of cultural mythmaking as a collective and dynamic process. He also outlines the often contentious relationships between the various parties who have contributed to the Superman mythos, including corporate executives, comics writers, artists, nostalgic commentators, and collectors. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of Superman’s appearances in comics and other media, Gordon also digs into comics archives to reveal the prominent role that fans have played in remembering, interpreting, and reimagining Superman’s iconography. Gordon considers how comics, film, and TV producers have taken advantage of fan engagement and nostalgia when selling Superman products. Investigating a character who is equally an icon of American culture, fan culture, and consumer culture, Superman thus offers a provocative analysis of mythmaking in the modern era.

Book excerpt: Comic books and superhero stories mirror essential societal values and beliefs. We can be Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Black Panther or Rocket Raccoon through our everyday choices. We can't fly, fix hyper drives or hear human heartbeats a mile away, but we can think about what Matt Murdock would do in a conflict, how Superman would respond to natural disasters and how Captain America would handle humanitarian crises. This book analyzes the impact of dozens of comics by examining the noble personalities, traits and actions of the main characters. Chapters detail how superheroes, comic books and other pop culture phenomena offer more than pure entertainment, and how we can better model ourselves after our favorite heroes. Through our good deeds, quick thinking and positive choices, we can become more like superheroes than we ever imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that comic books of the post-World War II era are poorly drawn and poorly written publications, notable only for the furor they raised. Contributors to this thoughtful collection, however, demonstrate that these comics constitute complex cultural documents that create a dialogue between mainstream values and alternative beliefs that question or complicate the grand narratives of the era. Close analysis of individual titles, including EC comics, Superman, romance comics, and other, more obscure works, reveals the ways Cold War culture--from atomic anxieties and the nuclear family to communist hysteria and social inequalities--manifests itself in the comic books of the era. By illuminating the complexities of mid-century graphic novels, this study demonstrates that postwar popular culture was far from monolithic in its representation of American values and beliefs.

Book excerpt: Almost immediately after his first appearance in comic books in June 1938, Superman began to be adapted to other media. The subsequent decades have brought even more adaptations of the Man of Steel, his friends, family, and enemies in film, television, comic strip, radio, novels, video games, and even a musical. The rapid adaptation of the Man of Steel occurred before the character and storyworld were fully developed on the comic book page, allowing the adaptations an unprecedented level of freedom and adaptability. The essays in this collection provide specific insight into the practice of adapting Superman from comic books to other media and cultural contexts through a variety of methods, including social, economic, and political contexts. Authors touch on subjects such as the different international receptions to the characters, the evolution of both Clark Kent's character and Superman's powers, the importance of the radio, how the adaptations interact with issues such as racism and Cold War paranoia, and the role of fan fiction in the franchise. By applying a wide range of critical approaches to adaption and Superman, this collection offers new insights into our popular entertainment and our cultural history.
