This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The interest that the different varieties of Peninsular and Latin American Spanish have aroused and continue to arouse is demonstrated by the abundant bibliography in which they have been described and catalogued from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. However, nowadays, it is essential to associate dialectology with sociolinguistics and pragmatics, in order to consider new perspectives of study around a linguistic fact: variables such as sex, level of education, age and the notions of prestige and covert prestige must be key elements when describing the different types of interactions and linguistic acts. At the same time, the varieties of Spanish should not only be considered from the linguistic and literary sphere, but their importance can be considered within other disciplines; therefore, this volume proposes a novel and complete analysis of Spanish and its diversity, combining the prism of linguistics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics, languages in contact, translation and interpretation, and the didactics of Spanish as a foreign language. The study is diverse and varied, like the Spanish language itself, but shows a constant relationship between the different disciplines presented.

Traducción, competencia plurilingüe y español como lengua de herencia (ELH) explores the connections between Spanish heritage language (SHL) education and translation competence. The volume identifies strategies to represent the linguistic experiences and practices of SHL students in the context of professional translation and interpreting training. Based on an empirical study with undergraduate students, this monograph provides insight on how to develop translation skills in three ways: as a plurilingual strategy, a pedagogical activity, and a professional skill. Because of its introductory nature, this book is of particular interest to SHL teachers and researchers seeking to systematically integrate translation practice into their teaching. Likewise, teachers of translation and interpreting who wish to learn how to enhance mediation as a learning component in translation and interpreting skills will find numerous suggestions on how to do so in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book offers pathbreaking research and practical strategies for Spanish heritage language learning Spelling acquisition and development is often a challenge for Spanish Heritage Language Learners (SHLLs). Instructors, too, struggle to find the best strategies to help their students internalize orthographic rules. Spelling in Spanish Heritage Language Education argues that spelling is not simply the cherry on top of good writing or a mere editing issue; rather, the skills behind the acquisition of spelling lie beneath deeper literacy development. Amàlia Llombart-Huesca discusses how to address this critical skill, including the cognitive skills underlying spelling, the role of age and bilingualism, and a thorough description of the most common types of spelling errors students make and their causes. Throughout the book, she demonstrates the importance of spelling skills by showing how they can help students improve other crucial literacy aspects, such as reading fluency, reading comprehension, and vocabulary growth. Written for instructors of SHLLs and researchers of SHL education, Spelling in Spanish Heritage Language Education includes guidelines, recommendations, and ideas for creating spelling activities and meaningfully integrating them into curricula. Combining novel research and practical strategies, this is an invaluable resource for Spanish instructors and researchers.

Book excerpt: English version: The following study is a description of the distinctive features of the linguistic variation of heritage students of Spanish at California State University San Marcos. The study consists of a survey of students enrolled in Spanish for Heritage Speakers (Spanish 250) and Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers (Spanish 301B), during the Fall 2016 semester. The objective of this study is to characterize the linguistic variations of Spanish language heritage learners. With the data collected we can help develop curriculum to meet the needs of heritage speakers of Spanish. The survey was divided into two sections, one that focused on sociolinguistic aspects (i.e., how students express themselves, how they use the language, and the impact of English to their heritage language) and the second one that concentrated on the grammatical and orthographic aspects of the Spanish language (i.e., verbal moods and tenses, accent marks, spelling). The data collected in this survey was analyzed and diverse areas were correlated to establish if there was a relationship between linguistic and extra linguistic factors that explain what our heritage students of Spanish have developed in their home environment, as well as to establish which linguistic areas need development and how these can be developed based on their sociolinguistic information collected.

Book excerpt: As the first text to present, in one place, a comprehensive and systematic overview of Spanish Language Acquisition research, The Acquisition of Spanish: A Research Overview in Multilingual Learning Contexts discusses a range of theoretical perspectives that outline issues surrounding language learning and the gaps in its research and teaching. Drawing on classic and current empirical studies on learner cohorts at different proficiency stages all over the world, the authors aim to bring bi-/multilingualism to the forefront to provide the reader with a deeper conceptual understanding of the challenges faced by different groups of Spanish learners in various learning contexts. Eve Zyzik and Melissa A. Bowles expertly synthesize and analyze a range of linguistic features and factors affecting learning, connecting these insights from Spanish to key theoretical and applied questions in SLA research more broadly. The text concludes with observations about research methodology, indicating the gaps in the literature and setting an agenda for future work in Spanish SLA to move the field forward. This unique, cohesive volume will be an invaluable foundational resource to advanced students and researchers in SLA, bilingualism/multilingualism, Hispanic & Romance studies, applied linguistics, education, and related areas who are interested in LOTEs (languages other than English) and Spanish SLA in particular. It will also be useful to those studying to become Spanish second language educators.

Book excerpt: Technology- mediated language learning has matured over the past few decades, with various tools and contexts now widely used in language education for all ages and levels. Many of today’s language learners have experienced technology as an ever- present feature both within and beyond the classroom, highlighting how the role of technology has expanded into many daily activities, and underscoring how research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) can inform and support the use of established and emerging technologies. The role of technology in language learning has continued to grow, with the recent COVID- 19 global pandemic further demonstrating the potential contributions of technology for supporting and facilitating second language development. Answering this increasing interest, this Handbook provides students, teachers, and scholars with a comprehensive collection of chapters on foundational topics and key issues related to technology, SLA, and where relevant, pedagogical applications. Book excerpt: Language Ideologies and Linguistic Identity in Heritage Language Learning addresses the ways in which discourses about language value and identities of linguistic expertise are constructed and negotiated in the Spanish heritage language (HL) classroom, and how the classroom discourse shapes, and is shaped by, the world outside of the classroom. The volume examines the sociopolitical contexts, personal histories, and communicative practices of Spanish teachers and students in two diverse geographic regions: the US states of Texas and Kansas. Adopting an integrated sociocultural approach, it considers the ways in which individuals draw from multiple linguistic resources and social practices in daily interaction and how they articulate their beliefs about language through storytelling. Rich interactional data, examples from social media, and stories of community engagement are utilized to demonstrate how Spanish heritage speakers use language creatively and proactively to legitimize and claim power in their home and community linguistic practices. This is an invaluable resource for applied linguists who seek to better understand the relationship between language, ideology, and identity and for graduate students and researchers in the fields of linguistics, Spanish, and HL education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects research on language, cognition, and communication in multilingualism. Apart from theoretical concerns including grammatical description, language-specific analyses, and modeling of multilingualism, different fields of study and research interests center around three core themes: The Early Years (aspects of language acquisition and development, including vernaculars or minority languages, reading, writing, and cognition, and multilingual extensions), Issues in Everyday Life (the role of multilingualism in and for speech–language–communication difficulties, including diagnosis, provisions of services, and later language breakdown), and From the Past to the Future (aspects of multilingualism beyond acquisition, education, or pathology, with a focus on heritage languages and translanguaging). Specialists from each of these areas introduce state-of-the-art research, novel experimental studies, and/or quantitative as well as qualitative data bearing on ‘multifaceted multilingualism’. There is a broad spectrum for take-home messages, ranging from new theoretical analyses or approaches to assess multilingual speakers all the way to recommendations for policy-makers.

Working en comunidad focuses on service-learning and Latina/o/e communities within a variety of institutional contexts. It provides a practical framework grounded in theoretical approaches that center Latina/o/e experiences as foundational to understanding how to prepare students to work in the community and en comunidad. The volume tackles three major themes: ethical approaches to working with Latina/o/e communities within language courses and beyond; preparing Latina/o/e students for working with their own communities in different environments; and ensuring equitable practices and building relationships that are mutually beneficial for students and community members. The editors forward two central arguments: (1) Equitable community engagement in higher education is a reflective and reciprocal process that develops empathy and personal and professional growth in students; and (2) service-learning is most transformative when it explicitly guides students and the community to build cultural humility and recognize Latina/o/e experiences and agency as foundational to the learning process. Many of the contributors and editors are Latina/o/e-identified scholars, practitioners, and researchers, who lend a rich body of experience and a personal dedication to this work. They present distinct approaches and geographies, as well as range of institutions, to offer a wide scope of engaged work that builds on the concept of comunidad to advance a critical new conceptual framework of equitable education and racial justice.
