Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apricot in California From the above table it is learned that Riverside County has the greatest total number of trees, but Santa Clara has the greatest number in bearing, Santa Clara County ranks second in total number of trees and Ventura third. Ventura also holds third place for the number of trees in bearing. By far the greatest increase in any one county in eleven years has been in Riverside County, which moved from eleventh place in 1909 to first place in 1920. While apricots grow best in the deep, moist valley soils, they are found in abundance along the foothills of all our mountain ranges where there is sufficient moisture to support growth. Although the apricot seems to do best in gravelly or sandy soils, it does well where there is a high percentage of clay, and even in stiff adobe. The apricot, on its own roots at least, will not tolerate a waterlogged soil, but on myrobalan root it is adapted to places where the prune might do well, but where the peach or cherry would not survive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apricot Growing in California The principal rootstocks used for apricots are apricot, peach, and myrobalan. The apricot and peach are more generally used than the myrobalan. The apricot cannot be relied upon to make a strong union with the myrobalan, for, although the trees often grow well for a number of years, they are apt to break at the graft union under stress of heavy loads or strong winds. The apricot root is resistant to the attacks of nematodes and the Pacific peach tree borers, and for this reason is valuable in districts where these pests are known to exist. All three principal rootstocks used for apricots are more or less susceptible to crown gall. The myrobalan is thought by some growers to be more resistant to oak fungus than either the apricot or peach, and is therefore used to some extent as a rootstock for the apricot. A questionnaire submitted to the nurserymen of California by the Division of Pomology showed that the percentage of apricot trees propagated on apricot stock in the years 1923 to 1928 inclusive varied from 30 per cent to 56 per cent. The percentage on peach stock varied to approximately the same extent. The percentage of apricots on apricot stock was greater than on peach stock four years out of the six for which records were obtained. The proportion of apricots on myrobalan decreased from per cent in 1923 to about 12 per cent in 1928. A few apricots. On Davidiana stock were also propagated during this period. In 1929 approximately 46 per cent of the apricot trees propagated were on apricot root, 16 per cent on myrobalan, and 38 per cent on peach. The almond is not used as a. Rootstock for apricots. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quality of Dried Fruits: A Survey of Dried Apricots, Prunes, Raisins, and Figs in Retail Markets Standard samples were obtained directly from the packers at intervals during the year and were stored at Fresno in tightly closed drums at 32° F. Medium and large sizes of apricots and prunes, which account for most of the sales volume, were used. Two widely distributed brands of each commodity were included. The first set of standard samples was obtained in October 1959 and was used for comparison with the retail sam ples at each examination throughout the sampling period. A second set of standards of apricots, prunes, and raisins was obtained in March 1960 and a third set in July 1960, and these were used in addition to the first set. The standard samples for figs were in finger packs, and only one set of standards was used. Standard samples did not change appreciably after they were stored at Fresno, but the raisin standards obtained in March and July were darker than the first set. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Factors That Affected the Annual Average Prices of Canned Apricots, 1923-24 to 1930-31: A Preliminary Report The purposes of this study are to determine the factors that have been res ponsible for the variations in the annual average f.o.b. Prices of canned apricots from 1923-24 to 1930-31 and to measure the influence of the more important factors that can be expressed in quantitative terms. It should be clearly recognized that the following analysis explains only what has occurred. It does not forecast what W111 occur in the future. In order to use this analysis in forecasting the probable price at which a given supply of canned apricots can be sold or in forecasting the probable supply that can be sold at a given price, it is first necessary to determine the future positions of the factors that affect canned apricot prices. The analysis has been divided into two parts: (1) factors that affected the prices received for canned apricots sold in the United States, and (2) factors that affected the prices received for canned apricots exported to the United Kingdom. Ob viously the prices received for canned apricots sold in both the United States and the United Kingdom are influenced by many factors. Not all of these factors, how ever, can be measured with the data now available. In this analysis only the follow ing factors have been measured: (1) shipments, (2) trend of demand, and (3) prices of competing canned fruits. While most of the variations that have occurred in the annual average f.o.b. Prices of canned apricots from 1923-24 to 1930-31 can be ao counted for by these three factors, other ones have also had some influence.
