Book excerpt: When Herb Keller suggested, more than two years ago, that we update our lectures held at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1977, and then have it published in the collection Springer Series in Computational Physics, we thought, at first, that it would be an easy task. Actually, we realized very quickly that it would be more complicated than what it seemed at first glance, for several reasons: 1. The first version of Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Variational Problems was, in fact, part of a set of monographs on numerical mat- matics published, in a short span of time, by the Tata Institute of Fun- mental Research in its well-known series Lectures on Mathematics and Physics; as might be expected, the first version systematically used the material of the above monographs, this being particularly true for Lectures on the Finite Element Method by P. G. Ciarlet and Lectures on Optimization—Theory and Algorithms by J. Cea. This second version had to be more self-contained. This necessity led to some minor additions in Chapters I-IV of the original version, and to the introduction of a chapter (namely, Chapter Y of this book) on relaxation methods, since these methods play an important role in various parts of this book.

Book excerpt: This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems is the only book available that analyzes in depth the mathematical foundations of the finite element method. It is a valuable reference and introduction to current research on the numerical analysis of the finite element method, as well as a working textbook for graduate courses in numerical analysis. It includes many useful figures, and there are many exercises of varying difficulty. Although nearly 25 years have passed since this book was first published, the majority of its content remains up-to-date. Chapters 1 through 6, which cover the basic error estimates for elliptic problems, are still the best available sources for material on this topic. The material covered in Chapters 7 and 8, however, has undergone considerable progress in terms of new applications of the finite element method; therefore, the author provides, in the Preface to the Classics Edition, a bibliography of recent texts that complement the classic material in these chapters. Audience: this book is particularly useful to graduate students, researchers, and engineers using finite element methods. The reader should have knowledge of analysis and functional analysis, particularly Hilbert spaces, Sobolev spaces, and differential calculus in normed vector spaces. Other than these basics, the book is mathematically self-contained.

Book excerpt: Variational Methods for the Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Elliptic Problems addresses computational methods that have proven efficient for the solution of a large variety of nonlinear elliptic problems. These methods can be applied to many problems in science and engineering, but this book focuses on their application to problems in continuum mechanics and physics. This book differs from others on the topic by presenting examples of the power and versatility of operator-splitting methods; providing a detailed introduction to alternating direction methods of multipliers and their applicability to the solution of nonlinear (possibly nonsmooth) problems from science and engineering; and showing that nonlinear least-squares methods, combined with operator-splitting and conjugate gradient algorithms, provide efficient tools for the solution of highly nonlinear problems. The book provides useful insights suitable for advanced graduate students, faculty, and researchers in applied and computational mathematics as well as research engineers, mathematical physicists, and systems engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to analyze within reasonable limits (it is not a treatise) the basic mathematical aspects of the finite element method. The book should also serve as an introduction to current research on this subject. On the one hand, it is also intended to be a working textbook for advanced courses in Numerical Analysis, as typically taught in graduate courses in American and French universities. For example, it is the author's experience that a one-semester course (on a three-hour per week basis) can be taught from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (with the exception of Section 3.3), while another one-semester course can be taught from Chapters 4 and 6. On the other hand, it is hoped that this book will prove to be useful for researchers interested in advanced aspects of the numerical analysis of the finite element method. In this respect, Section 3.3, Chapters 5, 7 and 8, and the sections on "Additional Bibliography and Comments should provide many suggestions for conducting seminars.

Book excerpt: On November 3, 2005, Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov left this world, untimely and unexpectedly. He was one of the most in?uential mathematicians in the mechanics of ?uids, and will be remembered for his outstanding results that had, and still have, a c- siderablysigni?cantin?uenceinthe?eld.Amonghis manyachievements, werecall that he was the founder of the modern mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations describing one- and two-dimensional motions of a viscous, compressible and heat-conducting gas. A brief account of Professor Kazhikhov’s contributions to science is provided in the following article “Scienti?c portrait of Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov”. This volume is meant to be an expression of high regard to his memory, from most of his friends and his colleagues. In particular, it collects a selection of papers that represent the latest progress in a number of new important directions of Mathematical Physics, mainly of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. These papers are written by world renowned specialists. Most of them were friends, students or colleagues of Professor Kazhikhov, who either worked with him directly, or met him many times in o?cial scienti?c meetings, where they had the opportunity of discussing problems of common interest.

Book excerpt: This volume covers the proceedings ofthe ICASE/LaRC workshop on "Finite Element Theory and Application" held during July 28-30, 1986. The purpose of this workshop was to provide an update on the status of finite element theory, to assess the impactoftbis theory on practice, and to suggest directions for Cuture research. There were thirteen participants in the workshop. Some of them were leading mathematicians working on the finite element theory, and the rest expert practitioners in the areas of fluid dynamics and structural analysis. The first six articles in this volume provide a brief review of the theoretical and computational aspects of finite element methods (FEM). The remaining seven articles deal with a variety of applications highlighting the type of results that are possible, and indicating areas which deserve future research. The first article is by Temam. lt provides an introduction and overview of the general finite element methods for the nonspecialist. lt also illustrates the power of finite element methods with two specific applications-the free surface flowjstructure interaction problern and the compressible Euler solu tion to the flow past a finite aspect ratio flat plate at incidence. The second article by Brezzi is againan introduction and overview ofmixed finite element methods. lt includes a brief discussion of special techniques for solving the discrete problem, as weil as some applications to certain basic problems in elasticity and hydrodynamics.
