These networks, referred to under the generic term as Broadband Integrated Service Digital Networks (B-ISDN), are targeted to efficiently deliver a diversity of services requested by different classes of customers. To this end, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is put forward as the specific packet-oriented transfer mode solution for B-ISDN. This thesis addresses the phenomenon of blocking inherent to these network systems and studies their performance both at the node and network level by proposing a new methodology for the approximate analysis of queueing network models of computer communication systems with finite capacities, complete sharing buffer management scheme and different types of building block queues with multiple classes of customers using entropy maximisation and the generalised exponential distribution.
