LES RESULTATS DES EXPERIENCES D'IONISATION-EXCITATION, COMPAREES A DES CALCULS THEORIQUES, MONTRENT CLAIREMENT QUE CELLES-CI SONT A LA CHARNIERE ENTRE SIMPLE ET DOUBLE IONISATION: A GRAND TRANSFERT D'IMPULSION ON RETROUVE DES DISTRIBUTIONS ANGULAIRES ANALOGUES A CELLES DE L'IONISATION SIMPLE, FAISANT SURTOUT RESSORTIR LES EFFETS DES CORRELATIONS ATOMIQUES. PAR CONTRE, A FAIBLE TRANSFERT D'IMPULSION, ON OBTIENT DES DISTRIBUTIONS TRES DIFFERENTES, QUI NE REPRODUISENT PAS LES CALCULS THEORIQUES, ET DONT L'ANALYSE MET EN EVIDENCE LA PREDOMINANCE D'EFFETS D'UNE DYNAMIQUE A TROIS CORPS, NOTAMMENT L'INTERACTION ENTRE ELECTRON EJECTE ET ION RESIDUEL EXCITE. LES EXPERIENCES DE DOUBLE IONISATION SONT PLUS COMPLEXES, EN RAISON DE LA DIFFICULTE TECHNIQUE (FAIBLES TAUX D'EVENEMENTS COINCIDENTS), ET EGALEMENT A CAUSE DE L'ABSENCE QUASI-COMPLETE DE POINTS DE REPERE THEORIQUES PRECIS. LE HAUT DEGRE DE DIFFERENTIATION DES RESULTATS PERMET CEPENDANT DEJA DE TIRER QUELQUES CONCLUSIONS QUALITATIVES; EN PARTICULIER, ELLES EXCLUENT UNE EXPLICATION EN TERMES DE DOUBLE COLLISION DE L'ELECTRON INCIDENT AVEC LES ELECTRONS ATOMIQUES

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a short outline of the present state of the theory of electron collisions with atomic particles - atoms, molecules and ions. It is addressed to those who by nature of their work need detailed information about the cross sections of various processes of electron collisions with atomic particles: experimentalists working in plasma physics, optics, quantum electronics, atmospheric and space physics, 'etc. Some of the cross sections have been measured. But in many important cases the only source of information is theoretical calcu lation. The numerous theoretical papers dealing with electronic collision processes contain various approximations. The inter relation between them and the level of their accuracy is often diffi cult to understand without a systematic study of the theory of atomic collisions, not to mention that theoretical considerations are necessary for the consistent interpretation of experimental results. The main constituents of the book are: 1. General theory with special emphasis on the topics most impor tant for understanding and discussing electron collisions with atomic particles.

Download or read book Fast Ion-atom and Ion-molecule Collisions written by Dzevad Belkic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal goal of this book is to provide state-of-the-art coverage of the non-relativistic three- and four-body theories at intermediate and high energy ion-atom and ion-molecule collisions. The focus is on the most frequently studied processes: electron capture, ionization, transfer excitation and transfer ionization. The content is suitable both for graduate students and experienced researchers. For these collisions, the literature has seen enormous renewal of activity in the development and applications of quantum-mechanical theories. This subject is of relevance in several branches of science and technology, like accelerator-based physics, the search for new sources of energy and high temperature fusion of light ions. Other important applications are in life sciences via medicine, where high-energy ion beams are used in radiotherapy for which a number of storage ring accelerators are in full operation, under construction or planned to be built worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to review this field for its most recent advances with an emphasis on the prospects for multidisciplinary applications. This book is accompanied by Interdisciplinary Research on Particle Collisions and Quantitative Spectroscopy Volume 2 - Fast Collisions of Light Ions with Matter: Charge Exchange and Ionization.
Book Synopsis Coincidence Studies of Electron and Photon Impact Ionization by : C.T. Whelan

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great advantage of coincidence measurements is that by suitable choice of the kinematical and geometrical arrangement one may probe delicate physical effects which would be swamped in less differential experiments. The measurement of the triple dif ferential and higher-order cross sections presents enormous technical difficulties, but refined experiments of this type provide an insight into the subtleties of the scattering process and offer a welcome, if severe, test of the available theoretical models. The last few years have been an exciting time to work in the field and much has been learned. Profound insights have been gleaned into the basic Coulomb few body problem in atomic physics: the experimental study of the fundamental (e,2e) processes on hydrogen and helium targets continues to add to our knowledge and indeed to challenge the best of our theoretical models; significant advances have been made in the understanding of the "double excitation problem," that is the study of ionization processes with two active target electrons: important measurements of (e,3e), (,),,2e), excitation-ionization and excitation autoionization have been reported and strides have been made in their theoretical description; the longstanding discrepancies between theory and experiment for relativistic (e,2e) processes were resolved, spin dependent effects predicted and ob served and the first successful coincidence experiments on surfaces and thin films were announced. Theory and experiment have advanced in close consort. The papers pre sented here cover the whole gambit of research in the field. Much has been achieved but much remains to be done.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Ion-Atom Collisions by : Jörg Eichler
Download or read book Lectures on Ion-Atom Collisions written by Jörg Eichler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-09-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic collisions offer some unique opportunities to study atomic structure and reaction mechanisms in experiment and theory, especially for projectiles of high atomic number provided by modern accelerators. The book is meant as an introduction into the field and provides some basic theoretical understanding of the atomic processes occurring when a projectile hits another atom. It also furnishes the tools for a mathematical description, however, without going deeper into the technical details, which can be found in the literature given. With this aim, the focus is on reactions, in which only a single active electron participates. Collisional excitation, ionization and charge transfer are discussed for collision velocities ranging from slow to comparable to the speed of light. For the highest projectile velocities, energy can be converted into mass, so that electron-positron pairs are created. In addition to the systematic treatment, a theoretical section specializes on electron-electron correlations and three chapters are devoted to selected highlights bordering to surface science and to physics with antiprotons. * Simple access to the theory of collisions between ions and atoms * Systematic treatment of basic features needed for an understanding * Mathematical details are omitted and referred to references * In order to bear out the essential ideas most clearly, a single active electron is assumed in most cases * In selected examples, theoretical results are confronted with experiment * Discussion supported by a large number of illustrations * Selected highlights in borderline fields are presented

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the collisions between micro particles is of great importance for the number of fields belonging to physics, chemistry, astrophysics, biophysics etc. The present book, a theory for electron-atom and molecule collisions is developed using non-relativistic quantum mechanics in a systematic and lucid manner. The scattering theory is an essential part of the quantum mechanics course of all universities. During the last 30 years, the author has lectured on the topics presented in this book (collisions physics, photon-atom collisions, electron-atom and electron-molecule collisions, "electron-photon delayed coincidence technique", etc.) at many institutions including Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, The University of Western Ontario, Canada, and The Meerut University, India. The present book is the outcome of those lectures and is written to serve as a textbook for post-graduate and pre-PhD students and as a reference book for researchers.
Book Synopsis Electron-Atom and Electron-Molecule Collisions by : Jürgen Hinze
Download or read book Electron-Atom and Electron-Molecule Collisions written by Jürgen Hinze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume have been presented during a workshop on "Electron-Atom and Molecule Collisions" held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Bielefeld in May 1980. This workshop, part of a larger program concerned with the "Properties and Reactions of Isolated Molecules and Atoms," focused on the theory and computational techniques for the quanti tative description of electron scattering phenomena. With the advances which have been made in the accurate quantum mechanical characterisation of bound states of atoms and molecules, the more complicated description of the unbound systems and resonances important in electron collision processes has matured too. As expli cated in detail in the articles of this volume, the theory for the quantitative explanation of elastic and inelastic electron molecule collisions, of photo- and multiple photon ionization and even for electron impact ionization is well developed in a form which lends itself to a complete quantitative ab initio interpretation and pre diction of the observable effects. Many of the experiences gained and the techniques which have evolved over the years in the com putational characterization of bound states have become an essential basis for this development. To be sure, much needs to be done before we have a complete and detailed theoretical understanding of the known collisional processes and of the phenomena and effects, which may still be un covered with the continuing refinement of the experimental tech niques.
Book Synopsis Atomic Processes in Electron-Ion and Ion-Ion Collisions by : F. Brouillard
Download or read book Atomic Processes in Electron-Ion and Ion-Ion Collisions written by F. Brouillard and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years after a first meeting in BADDECK, Canada, on the Physics of Ion-Ion and Electron-Ion collisions, a second Nato Advanced Study Institute, in HAl~/Lesse, Belgium, reexamined the subject which had become almost a new one, in consideration of the many important developments that had occured in the mean time. The developments have been particularly impressive in two areas : the di-electronic recombination of electrons with ions and the collisional processes of mUltiply charged ions. For dielectronic recombination, a major event was the obtainment, in 1983, of the first experimental data. This provided, at last, a non speculative basis for the study of that intricate and subtle process and strongly stimulated the theoretical activities. Multiply charged ions, on the other hand, have become popular, thanks to the development of powerful ion sources. This circumstance, together with a pressing demand from thermonuclear research for ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, has triggered systematic experimental investigations and new theoretical studies, which have contributed to considerably enlarge, over the last five years, our understanding of the collisional processes of multiply charged ions. Dielectronic recombination and multiply charged ions were therefore central points in the programme of the A.S.I. in HAN/Lesse and are given a corresponding emphasis in the present book.

Book Synopsis Atomic Collisions and Spectra by : U Fano
Download or read book Atomic Collisions and Spectra written by U Fano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Collisions and Spectra provides an overview of the state of knowledge on atomic collision physics. The book grew out of lecture notes for a succession of courses at the University of Chicago in 1967-1979, which reported the new material as it was taking a definite form. It has been enriched since 1980, as the subject matured and continued to expand. The book is organized into four parts. Part A deals briefly with rather elementary items of general information. Part B then takes up in considerable detail those aspects of single-electron scattering whose mastery is essential for treating multielectron processes. Part C deals with multielectron processes with a residual—if often realistic—restriction, namely, that the multielectron interactions remain confined within a core region from which only a single electron escapes into alternative channels of a long-range field. Part D surveys studies of double (or multiple) escape of electrons from a core. The book is intended for multiple use as a graduate school text, a tool for independent study, or a reference for particular topics.

Download or read book Electron-Molecule Collisions written by Isao Shimamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering phenomena play an important role in modern physics. Many significant discoveries have been made through collision experiments. Amongst diverse kinds of collision systems, this book sheds light on the collision of an electron with a molecule. The electron-molecule collision provides a basic scattering problem. It is scattering by a nonspherical, multicentered composite particle with its centers having degrees of freedom of motion. The molecule can even disintegrate, Le., dissociate or ionize into fragments, some or all of which may also be molecules. Although it is a difficult problem, the recent theoretical, experimental, and computational progress has been so significant as to warrant publication of a book that specializes in this field. The progress owes partly to technical develop ments in measurements and computations. No less important has been the great and continuing stimulus from such fields of application as astrophysics, the physics of the earth's upper atmosphere, laser physics, radiation physics, the physics of gas discharges, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, and so on. This book aims at introducing the reader to the problem of electron molecule collisions, elucidating the physics behind the phenomena, and review ing, to some extent, up-to-date important results. This book should be appropri ate for graduate reading in physics and chemistry. We also believe that investi gators in atomic and molecular physics will benefit much from this book.

Phenomena involving the classical ion-atom collision fields, impact parameter dependences, quasimolecular and electron correlation effects, coherence phenomena, the electron and photon spectroscopy of highly charged projectile and recoil ions, the loss and capture of electrons, molecular and solid state effects, and different aspects of instrumentation are all discussed in this volume.
Book Synopsis Photon and Electron Collisions with Atoms and Molecules by : Philip G. Burke
Download or read book Photon and Electron Collisions with Atoms and Molecules written by Philip G. Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on photon and electron collisions with atomic and molecular targets and their ions has seen a rapid increase in interest, both experimentally and theoretically, in recent years. This is partly because these processes provide an ideal means of investigating the dynamics of many particle systems at a fundamental level and partly because their detailed understanding is required in many other fields, particularly astrophysics, plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear fusion, laser physics, atmospheric processes, isotope separation, radiation physics and chemistry and surface science. In recent years a number of important advances have been made, both on the experimental side and on the theoretical side. On the experimental side these include absolute measurements of cross sections, experiments using coincidence techniques, the use of polarised beams and targets, the development of very high energy resolution electron beams, the use of synchrotron radiation sources and ion storage rings, the study of laser assisted atomic collisions, the interaction of super-intense lasers with atoms and molecules and the increasing number of studies using positron beams.
