De nouvelles méthodes ont permis d’estimer la population des courts-circuits et de localiser les plus sévères en vue d’une réparation éventuelle. Lorsque les machines sont alimentées par un variateur de vitesse, la durée de vie des isolants organiques se réduit fortement lorsque les pics de tensions excèdent le seuil d’apparition des décharges partielles qui sont très agressives pour les isolants organiques. Une première méthode propose d’optimiser la conception de la machine pour limiter les contraintes subies par l’isolation inter-spire afin d’augmenter significativement leur durée de vie en travaillant sur les arrangements des spires dans les encoches. Une seconde consiste à utiliser des isolations inorganiques au sein des machines basse tension. Les contraintes de mise en œuvre importantes imposées par ces matériaux imposent de réviser les méthodes classiques de conception des machines. "

De même, les essais n'ont fait l'objet que d'une description succincte. Afin de conserver à l'ouvrage une taille raisonnable, on a renoncé à un traite- ment complet des phénomènes transitoires par la transformation de Laplace ou les méthodes de calcul numérique et retenu seulement, à titre d'application des relations de base, le calcul détaillé des valeurs initiales de courants et de couples de court-circuit. La méthode consistant à négliger, dans un premier temps, l'amortissement est intéres- sante au plan pédagogique par l'entraînement qu'elle procure au bon choix d'hypothèses simplificatrices. La solution exacte tenant compte des amortissements a été fournie sans démonstration, afin de pouvoir définir les différentes constantes de temps (cf. chap. 6,7 et 8). La matière du volume X s'appuie sur les notions générales de l'électrotechnique (vol. I) et de l'électromécanique (vol. IX), sur certaines propriétés des matériaux (vol. II) et sur l'électromagnétisme en régime quasi-statique (vol. III). Elle fait appel égale- ment à des notions développées en électronique de puissance et de réglage (vol. Book excerpt: Ce travail de thèse s'intéresse à l'analyse et à l'évaluation de la pénétration des ondes électromagnétiques haute fréquence dans un système complexe surdimensionné, par l'approche dite Power Balance (PWB). La méthode développée dans ces travaux consiste à modéliser les interactions électromagnétiques du problème initial en appliquant les principes de la topologieélectromagnétique et lui adjoignant un formalisme basé sur des considérations énergétiques et macroscopiques de ces interactions. Dans un premier temps, on rappelle les fondements théoriques de la topologie électromagnétique, puis les principes de caractérisation de l'environnement électromagnétique dans une cavité surdimensionnée complexe par un modèle semi-probabiliste dérivé des techniques de chambres réverbérantes. En couplant ces 2 approches et en supposant les mécanismes de dissipation et/ ou de transfert d'énergie dans le système indépendants, on montre que les équations BLT de latopologie électromagnétique permettent de régir les interactions dans le système. Dans un second temps, des modèles PWB élémentaires de sections efficaces de couplage moyenne qui caractérisent ces mécanismes, comme les pertes par effet joule dans les matériaux, les couplages sur câbles ou les transferts par ouvertures, ont été développés et validés par desréférences bibliographiques ou par expérimentations. Finalement, l'approche PWB a été validée sur 3 exemples de systèmes de complexité croissante: une structure générique cylindrique, un équipement avionique et la zone centrale d'un avion rafale. Ainsi, la potentialité de la méthodologie PWB a été démontrée.

The work offers a critical examination of sources with a focus on the twentieth century, especially the period between the wars. Important contributions were made through both the work of French scholars from within diverse disciplines (mathematicians, physicists, engineers), and through the geographical crossroads that France provided to scientific communication at the time. This study includes an examination of the period before the First World War which is vital to understanding the work of the later period. By examining literature sources such as periodicals on the topic of electricity from that era, the author has unearthed a very important text by Henri Poincaré, dating from 1908. In this work Poincaré applied the concept of limit cycle (which he had introduced in 1882 through his own works) to study the stability of the oscillations of a device for radio engineering. The “discovery” of this text means that the classical perspective of the historiography of this mathematical theory must be modified. Credit was hitherto attributed to the Russian mathematician Andronov, from correspondence dating to 1929. In the newly discovered Poincaré text there appears to be a strong interaction between science and technology or, more precisely, between mathematical analysis and radio engineering. This feature is one of the main components of the process of developing the theory of nonlinear oscillations. Indeed it is a feature of many of the texts referred to in these chapters, as they trace the significant developments to which France contributed. Scholars in the fields of the history of mathematics and the history of science, and anyone with an interest in the philosophical underpinnings of science will find this a particularly engaging account of scientific discovery and scholarly communication from an era full of exciting developments.
