The technique, termed the Generation of Regional Input-Output Tables (GRIT), is designed for general use in the production of regional input-output tables, and other data sources contributing towards the holistic accuracy of the table, thereby providing accurate maximisation of input-output tables within a given budget constraint.

Book excerpt: Hybrid input-output models combine nonsurvey techniques for estimating regional direct requirements tables with superior data, which are obtained from experts, surveys, and other reliable sources (primary or secondary). Such data can be added at any stage of model construction. To date, hybrid model production has been defined only in very general terms. In a 1993 paper in the journal Economic Systems Research, I have pointed out directions that could prove fruitful in developing a more detailed approach. I start the paper by searching for an approach that recognizes critical portions of input-output models that are ripe for survey work or the collection of other superior data. This search begins with a review of existing measures that identify sectors that are most critical to the accuracy of the Leontief inverse. I next compare these measures for their ability to predict sectors critical to the survey-based 1972 Washington State Input-Output Table. In the third section, I combine the findings of the second section with that of other literature to develop a quasi-complete superior-data search strategy for producing hybrid regional input-output tables. In a fourth section, I test the strategy by employing the 1972 Washington State input-output table. Tests are of models both closed and open with respect to households. Following this, I conclude with implications of the findings.

Book excerpt: In this paper we investigate the role of input-output data source in the regional econometric input-output models. While there has been a great deal of experimentation focused on the accuracy of alternative methods for estimating regional input-output coefficients, little attention has been directed to the role of accuracy when the input-output system is nested within a broader accounting framework. The issues of accuracy were considered in two contexts, forecasting and impact analysis focusing on a model developed for the Chicago Region. We experimented with three input-output data sources: observed regional data, national input-output, and randomly generated input-output coefficients. The effects of different sources of input-output data on regional econometric input-output model revealed that there are significant differences in results obtained in impact analyses. However, the adjustment processes inherent in the econometric input-output system seem to mute the initial differences in input- output data when the model is used for forecasting. Since applications of these types of models involve both impact and forecasting exercises, there would still seem to be a strong motivation for basing the system on the most accurate set of input-output accounts.

We explain the basic structure of an input-output table and the matrix algebra behind the computation of trade in value added statistics. Specifically, we compute measures of domestic value-added, foreign value added, and forward and backward linkages, as well as measures of both a country’s participation and position in global value chains. We work in detail with an example of a global input-output table for 3 countries each with 4 sectors, provided by the Eora Multi-Region Input-Output (MRIO) database. The aim is to provide an introduction to the analysis of global value chains for use in policy work. An accompanying suite of Matlab codes are provided that can be used with the full set of Eora MRIO tables.

Regional analyses require detailed and accurate information about dynamics happening within and between regional economies. However, regional input-output tables and trade flows are rarely observed and they must be estimated using up-to-date information. Common estimation approaches vary widely but consider tables and flows independently. Here, by using commonly used economic assumptions and available economic information, this paper presents a method that integrates the estimation of regional input-output tables and trade flows across regions. Examples of the method implementation are presented and compared with other approaches, suggesting that the integrated approach provides advantages in terms of estimation accuracy and analytical capabilities.
