Book Synopsis Bilingual Sentence Processing by : Eva M. Fernández
Download or read book Bilingual Sentence Processing written by Eva M. Fernández and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross-linguistic differences documented in studies of relative clause attachment offer an invaluable opportunity to examine a particular aspect of bilingual sentence processing: Do bilinguals process their two languages as if they were monolingual speakers of each? This volume provides a review of existing research on relative clause attachment, showing that speakers of languages like English attach relative clauses differently than do speakers of languages like Spanish. Fernández reports the findings of an investigation with monolinguals and bilinguals, tested using speeded ("on-line") and unspeeded ("off-line") methodology, with materials in both English and Spanish. The experiments reveal similarities across the groups when the procedure is speeded, but differences with unspeeded questionnaires: The monolinguals replicate the standard cross-linguistic differences, while bilinguals have language-independent preferences determined by language dominance — bilinguals process stimuli in either of their languages according to the general preferences of monolinguals of their dominant language.
Book Synopsis Beating the Fascists? by : Eve Rosenhaft
Download or read book Beating the Fascists? written by Eve Rosenhaft and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-08-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Eve Rosenhaft examines the involvement of Communists in political violence during the years of Hitler's rise to power in Germany (1929-33). Specifically, she aims to account for their participation in `street-fighting' or 'gang-fighting' with National Socialist storm-troopers. The origins of this conflict are examined at two levels. First Dr Rosenhaft analyses the official policy of the Communist Party towards fascism and Nazism, and the special anti-fascist and self-defence organizations which it developed. Among the aspects of Communist policy that are explored are the relation between the international confrontation between Communists and Social Democrats as claimants to lead the left, and the implications of this dispute in German politics; the ideological difficulties in the implementation of Communist policy in a period of economic dislocation; and the organizational problems posed by the fight against fascism. Dr Rosenhaft then explores the attitudes and experience of the Communist rank and file engaged in the struggle against fascism, concentrating on the city of Berlin, where a fierce contest for control of the streets was waged.

Book Synopsis Henry Dozier by : Charles Otto Brantigan
Download or read book Henry Dozier written by Charles Otto Brantigan and published by Readersmagnet LLC. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did someone really boil a baby? Henry Dozier was both a talented Victorian architect and a troubled soul. In 1887 he moved to Cripple Creek Colorado from Denver, presumably to rebuild a town destroyed by 2 devastating fires. According to the newspapers, he was also dissipating his income in dissolute behavior. On February 4, 1897, there was an impassioned letter to the editor from Celestia Dozier, head of the household in Denver, in spite of the fact that she was only sixteen years old. Celestia noted that her father was supporting his family as best that he could under the circumstances and that the newspaper report that her mother tried to boil the baby was incorrect. The Denver Post noted in 1898, in discussing his lack of support from his family, that he had 9 children. The Rocky Mountain News reported the same thing in 1897. The 1910 census reported that he had 9 children of which 8 were living. Enjoy the story of this truly unique architect!
