Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appreciations: An Essay on Style Since all progress of mind consists for the most part in differentiation, in the resolution of an obscure and complex object into its component aspects, it is surely the stupidest of losses to confuse things which right reason has put asunder, to lose the sense of achieved distinctions, the distinction between poetry and prose, for instance, or, to speak more exactly, between the laws and characteristic excellences of verse and prose composition. On the other hand, those who have dwelt most emphatically on the distinction between prose and verse, prose and poetry, may sometimes have been tempted to limit the proper functions of prose too narrowly; and this again is at least false economy, as being, in effect, the renunciation of a certain means or faculty, in a world where after all we must needs make the most of things. Book excerpt: Appreciations, with an Essay on Style by Walter Pater [5] SINCE all progress of mind consists for the most part in differentiation, in the resolution of an obscure and complex object into its component aspects, it is surely the stupidest of losses to confuse things which right reason has put asunder, to lose the sense of achieved distinctions, the distinction between poetry and prose, for instance, or, to speak more exactly, between the laws and characteristic excellences of verse and prose composition. Critical efforts to limit art a priori, by anticipations regarding the natural incapacity of the material with which this or that artist works, as the sculptor with solid form, or the prose-writer with the ordinary [6] language of men, are always liable to be discredited by the facts of artistic production; and while prose is actually found to be a coloured thing with Bacon, picturesque with Livy and Carlyle, musical with Cicero and Newman, mystical and intimate with Plato and Michelet and Sir Thomas Browne, exalted or florid, it may be, with Milton and Taylor, it will be useless to protest that it can be nothing at all, except something very tamely and narrowly confined to mainly practical ends-a kind of "good round-hand;" as useless as the protest that poetry might not touch prosaic subjects as with Wordsworth, or an abstruse matter as with Browning, or treat contemporary life nobly as with Tennyson. In subordination to one essential beauty in all good literary style, in all literature as a fine art, as there are many beauties of poetry so the beauties of prose are many, and it is the business of criticism to estimate them as such; as it is good in the criticism of verse to look for those hard, logical, and quasi-prosaic excellences which that too has, or needs. To find in the poem, amid the flowers, the allusions, the mixed perspectives, of Lycidas for instance, the thought, the logical structure: -how wholesome! how delightful! as to identify in prose what we call the poetry, the imaginative power, not treating it as out of place and a kind of vagrant intruder, but by way of an estimate of its rights, that is, of its achieved powers, there. Book excerpt: Appreciations: With An Essay On Style This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Appreciations, Vol. 2 Finally, Hall Caine, whose Sonnets of Three Centuries at once obtained the success which that ably edited compilation deserved. To all these writers, but, from the student's point of view, of course more especially to Main, the present editor is indebted, as must be every future worker in this secluded but not least beautiful section of the Garden of Poetry. There are, moreover, one or two students who have done good service in this cause without having published in book form either their opinions or any sonnet anthology; especially among these should reference be made to the anonymous writer of two admirable papers on the sonnet in the Quarterly Review (1866) to the anony mous author of the thoughtful and sugges tive article in the Westminster Review (1871) and to the anonymous contributor of the two highly interesting papers on sonnet literature which appeared in the Dublin Review for 1876 and 1877; to Ashcroft Noble, a capable and discriminating critic, whose article in the Contemporary Review attracted considerable notice; to the late Rector of Lincoln College, Mark Pattison, who prefaced his edition of Milton's sonnets with a suggestive essay to the late Arch bishop Trench, the value of whose edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Style: And Other Essays It is beginning to be felt more keenly than for a long time before, that, as the value of the materials of a building, Whatever their cost, depends mainly upon the skill With Which they are put together, so in literary architecture it is the manner in Which the ideas are fitted together into a. Symmetrical and harmonious Whole, as well as adorned and embellished, that, quite as much as the ideas themselves, constitutes the worth of an essay, an oration, or a poem. As the diamond or the emerald, even the Kohinoor itself, - has little beauty as it lies in the mine, but must be freed from its incrustations, and cut and polished by the lapidary, before it is fit to blaze in the coronet of a queen, or to sparkle on the breast of beauty, so thought in the ore has little use or charm, and sparkles and captivates only When polished and set in cunning sentences by the literary artist. But there is another and more potent reason for the grow ing estimation of style. As an instrument for Winning the public attention, for saving the reader all needless labor, and for keeping a hold on the grateful memory, its value cannot be easily exaggerated. A hundred years ago, in the days of stage-coaches and ramage presses, When literature did not come to us in bales, and to be a man of one book was no disgrace, style might have been regarded as a luxury. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Essays on the Theory of Style The practical object of this book is defined by the various treatises and handbooks for rhetorical study now in the field. These are (1) the many excellent text-books on the subject that have appeared in the last twenty-five or thirty years; (2) books of what is called rhetorical analysis, approaching the study of composition through examination of distinguished stylists; (3) treatises on the main types of literary method, as description, narration, exposition, and argumentation, often accompanied by precept and rule for the writing of themes; and (4) books of general and wholesome counsel in literary affairs. Excluding these classes, one has left the very numerous essays on the theory of style, and it is the chief of these in English, written by distinguished authors, that are here presented. They are selected from a contemporary rather than a historical point of view, and taken collectively, they represent the more important bearings of the subject with as little repetition and in as much variety of idea as possible. Newman's essay may be regarded as an introduction, in that it states the general problem of literature. The essays of De Quincey, Spencer, and Lewes follow, with statements of general principles and exposition of methods of a suggestive and interesting sort. Stevenson, particularly, and Pater are somewhat more confined; and Mr. Harrison's essay is an example of the safe, practical talk, the name of which is legion. Book excerpt: Herbert Spencer's book "Philosophy of Style: An Essay" contains a brief essay by Spencer on the principles of writing well. Writing with style is the principal goal of all writers. And while style is something that each scribe must develop independently, there are also many bedrocks of good style that a writer can learn to incorporate through study and practice. Herbert Spencer's essay attempts to pass along the author's personal philosophy of good style for the betterment of writers and students. The main focus of Spencer's essay is on the correct positioning of words in a sentence. Writers should strive, "To so present ideas that they may be apprehended with the least possible mental effort." The essay is divided into two parts, and is concluded with a series of notes on writing well. Spencer's book is a valuable addition to the library of any writer or student. As should be expected from a book about writing well, the prose is tidy yet informative. Spencer is an expert, and any developing writer would be wise to head the advice provided in this brief essay. There are not many books you can read that will make you a more conscientious writer - this is one of them. "Philosophy of Style: An Essay" should be mandatory reading for all young writers. The simple stylistic suggestions will improve anybody's writing if properly implemented. As an expression of a personal philosophy and as a writing textbook, Herbert Spencer's "Philosophy of Style" is highly recommended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Literary Art The main connecting thought of these Essays is that literary art, and indeed all art, is an organ in the body of human culture and life, and so dependent on all other organs and all on it. This organic view implies that art segregative or egoistic, art for art's sake, is as destructive of real art as the opposite tendency, the altruistic, that is, the making art wholly subservient to some other organ in humanity, like religion or ethics. I believe we must look at human life in all its manifestations, industrial, artistic, scientific, religious, and ethical, as constituting in totality an organism where each factor is no more to serve itself merely, or even some other member, than the eye is for the eye's sake or the hand for the hand's sake. As the eye is from the whole body and for it, and only by a constant interdependence reaches its own best development, so also is art dependent on the whole organism of civilization for its life and growth. These essays represent the best of his writing and operate in conversation with one another. He probes the questions of Irish national and cultural identity that underlie the finest achievements of Irish writing in all genres. Together, the essays form an unusually lively and far-reaching study of three crucial Irish writers – Swift, Yeats and Joyce – together with other voices including Mangan, Beckett, Trevor, McGahern and Doyle. Donoghue's forceful arguments, deep engagement with the critical tradition, buoyant prose and extensive learning are all exemplified in this collection. This book is essential reading for all those interested in Irish literature and culture and its far-reaching effects on the world.
