Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of a child at any age, shatters the parent's heart and causes a complicated grief which never goes away. Dr. Sue Hamby found the murdered body of her only child, Russ, on March 21, 2013, and started on a difficult and painful grief journey. She realized she would never get over the death of her child but had to learn to absorb the loss into her life until it became a part of who she was. Because of her faith in God, her mourning was eventually transformed into joy and her scars became stars. In her book, she touches the depths of your heart and soul by sharing her traumatic grief journey and how her painful scars of grief, bitterness, and brokenness were turned into stars for God's glory. Her story offers hope and healing to those who are struggling with grief and learning how to navigate the grief journey, using God as their GPS. "I have read Dr. Sue Hamby's Turning Your Scars into Stars in one sitting. I couldn't put it down once I started reading the book. This semi-autobiographical narration by Dr. Hamby is a must read for all people, especially people who think that they are alone, depressed, hopeless and helpless." Girija S. Chintapalli, MD Retired Psychiatrist "Her story of how the LORD changed her life through that God-breathed message is a must read for anyone who has lost a loved one." Dan Kirkley, President Hope for the Hungry "Turning Your Scars into Stars is spiritually inspiring and full of truth. It is very well written in such a manner that will not only appeal to multiple victims of tragedies but a wide generational audience. " Michael K. Sweeney, Director of Investigations and Law Enforcement Development INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE MISSION (IJM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s in Britain a new school of critical criminology arose to challenge the political and philosophical idealism that characterized its critical predecessors, and to offer an alternative to the crime control policies of the 'New Right.' Arguing that by overemphasizing the crimes of the powerful, much of critical criminology had virtually ignored the impact of street crime on its victims, a 'left realism' emerged to reassert the centrality of the victim in the development of a progressive criminology. Critical realism recognizes the seriousness of street crime for those people victimized by it (particularly women), acknowledges that a consensus as to the desireability of a core group of laws does exist, and advocates various kinds of criminal justice reform and crime prevention strategies. In this respect, there are important parallels with debates in feminism concerning the role of the state in the problem of violence against women. One of the most important contributions critical realism has made to criminological research is the development of local crime surveys which attempt to measure patterns of victimization and policing and how these are perceived by the general public. Such research remains largely undeveloped in North America, and it is the purpose of this book to begin to take stock of these developments, and examine their relevance for North America. This is the first text to include a critical examination of left realism, examine its relationship to feminism, and comment on its relevance outside Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Foreword by Stephen R. Covey Are outer demands for more success, more money, and more prestige overwhelming your inner longings? Is your work no longer energizing you? For many people in the work world, years of frenetic activity and blind ambition are actually killing them. They are enslaved to the opinions of others...to the financial burden of an extravagant lifestyle...to a crushing fear of failure. The great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen succinctly illuminated foibles like these in his treasured fairy tales for children and adults. Now, the powerful lessons of these classic folk tales have been ingeniously applied to the complexities of the modern workplace. The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work probes H. C. Andersen's sharp and witty stories for lessons that will inspire you to bring more meaning, more energy, and more joy to your work -- to create a meaningful work life. You'll read about: * The Emperor's New Clothes: This prickly story pokes fun at phoniness and snobbery and shows how fear and ego can drive you to foolishness. You'll learn to reclaim your own agenda by using two terrific fool-detectors: self-awareness and candid conversations. * The Ugly Duckling: This fierce tale of rejection, survival, longing, learning, and growing teaches you that success is not just having a great career, but finding out where you belong and becoming the person you were meant to be. * The Dung Beetle: The dung beetle, a self-absorbed and status-driven creature, provides a cautionary example of the need to get past illusions and face the reality of your strengths and weaknesses in order to succeed. * The Nightingale: This charming story looks at a plain little bird that sings the most enchanting songs, drawing its strength from nature, meaning, and freedom -- in sharp contrast to the gold, titles, and applause that motivate the emperor's court. The tale teaches you to push beyond mere perfunctory performances and reach your full potential. In addition to the concise summaries and probing analyses of H. C. Andersen's tales, The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work includes the author's new translations of the full texts, which restore the humor and rich detail often muted in previous English translations. Simple but never simplistic, these insightful interpretations and translations of some of the most cherished stories ever written will help you look deeply at your life, laugh lightly at your flaws, and make the changes needed to build a more meaningful, joyful work life."

Book excerpt: In this witty guide for seekers of all ages, author Henry Alford seeks instant enlightenment through conversations with those who have lived long and lived well. Armed with recent medical evidence that supports the cliche that older people are, indeed, wiser, Alford sets off to interview people over 70--some famous (Phyllis Diller, Harold Bloom, Edward Albee), some accomplished (the world's most-quoted author, a woman who walked across the country at age 89 in support of campaign finance reform), some unusual (a pastor who thinks napping is a form of prayer, a retired aerospace engineer who eats food out of the garbage.) Early on in the process, Alford interviews his 79 year-old mother and step-father, and inadvertently changes the course of their 36 year-long union. Part family memoir, part Studs Terkel, How To Live considers some unusual sources--deathbed confessions, late-in-life journals--to deliver a highly optimistic look at our dying days. By showing that life after 70 is the fulfillment of, not the end to, life's questions and trials, How to Live delivers that most unexpected punch: it makes you actually want to get older.

With passionate insight, wry humor, and an adventurous spirit, once again Peart offers a collection of open letters that take readers on the road, behind the scenes, and into the inner workings of an ever-inquisitive mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much good has experience done you so far? How much good do you expect it will do? Those who have lived eight decades in this world often feel the need to write about their life experiences or life philosophies. If that person has lived a varied, experiential life and shows good spiritual fruit in that life, it might be wise of those who are coming after them to read and listen to them and thus, learn! Ron Higdon has lived such a life and has now written such a book. Whether you are considering how to deal with change or how to find some stability, whether you are looking for the right answers, or just searching for the right questions, this book will look at living in a practical, community-centered, value-affirming way. Ron has lived those decades and done so thoughtfully. Now he's helping the rest of us out. So fix yourself a “hot cuppa,” pull up a chair, clean your reading glasses, and settle in for a chapter or two (or more!) and mark some nuggets of Higdon Gold to consider and meditate on.
