Book excerpt: The burdensome capital cost of urban water distribution systems demands the use of efficient optimization methods capable of finding a relatively inexpensive design that guarantees a minimum functionality under all conditions of operation. The combinatorial and nonlinear nature of the optimization problem involved accepts no definitive method of solution. Adaptive search methods are well fitted for this type of problem (to which more formal methods cannot be applied), but their computational requirements demand the development and implementation of additional heuristics to find a satisfactory solution. This work seeks to employ adaptive search methods to enhance the search process used to find the optimal design of any water distribution system. A first study presented here introduces post-optimization heuristics that analyze the best design obtained by a genetic algorithm--arguably the most popular adaptive search method--and perform an ordered local search to maximize further cost savings. When used to analyze the best design found by a genetic algorithm, the proposed post-optimization heuristics method successfully achieved additional cost savings that the genetic algorithm failed to detect after an exhaustive search. The second study herein explores various ways to improve artificial neural networks employed as fast estimators of computationally intensive constraints. The study presents a new methodology for generating any large set of water supply networks to be used for the training of artificial neural networks. This dataset incorporates several distribution networks in the vicinity of the search space in which the genetic algorithm is expected to focus its search. The incorporation of these networks improved the accuracy of artificial neural networks trained with such a dataset. These neural networks consistently showed a lower margin of error than their counterparts trained with conventional training datasets populated by randomly generated distribution networks.

Book excerpt: The concept of a system as an entity in its own right has emerged with increasing force in the past few decades in, for example, the areas of electrical and control engineering, economics, ecology, urban structures, automaton theory, operational research and industry. The more definite concept of a large-scale system is implicit in these applications, but is particularly evident in fields such as the study of communication networks, computer networks and neural networks. The Wiley-Interscience Series in Systems and Optimization has been established to serve the needs of researchers in these rapidly developing fields. It is intended for works concerned with developments in quantitative systems theory, applications of such theory in areas of interest, or associated methodology. Of related interest Stochastic Programming Peter Kall, University of Zurich, Switzerland and Stein W. Wallace, University of Trondheim, Norway Stochastic Programming is the first textbook to provide a thorough and self-contained introduction to the subject. Carefully written to cover all necessary background material from both linear and non-linear programming, as well as probability theory, the book draws together the methods and techniques previously described in disparate sources. After introducing the terms and modelling issues when randomness is introduced in a deterministic mathematical programming model, the authors cover decision trees and dynamic programming, recourse problems, probabilistic constraints, preprocessing and network problems. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter. Throughout, the emphasis is on the appropriate use of the techniques, rather than on the underlying mathematical proofs and theories, making the book ideal for researchers and students in mathematical programming and operations research who wish to develop their skills in stochastic programming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water supply- and drainage systems and mixed water channel systems are networks whose high dynamic is determined and/or affected by consumer habits on drinking water on the one hand and by climate conditions, in particular rainfall, on the other hand. According to their size, water networks consist of hundreds or thousands of system elements. Moreover, different types of decisions (continuous and discrete) have to be taken in the water management. The networks have to be optimized in terms of topology and operation by targeting a variety of criteria. Criteria may for example be economic, social or ecological ones and may compete with each other. The development of complex model systems and their use for deriving optimal decisions in water management is taking place at a rapid pace. Simulation and optimization methods originating in Operations Research have been used for several decades; usually with very limited direct cooperation with applied mathematics. The research presented here aims at bridging this gap, thereby opening up space for synergies and innovation. It is directly applicable for relevant practical problems and has been carried out in cooperation with utility and dumping companies, infrastructure providers and planning offices. A close and direct connection to the practice of water management has been established by involving application-oriented know-how from the field of civil engineering. On the mathematical side all necessary disciplines were involved, including mixed-integer optimization, multi-objective and facility location optimization, numerics for cross-linked dynamic transportation systems and optimization as well as control of hybrid systems. Most of the presented research has been supported by the joint project „Discret-continuous optimization of dynamic water systems“ of the federal ministry of education and research (BMBF).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Water distribution system connects consumers to sources of water, using hydraulic components, such as pipes, valves, and reservoirs. The engineer faced with the design of such a system, or of additions to an existing system, has to select the sizes of its components. Also he has to consider the way in which the operational components, pumps and valves, will be used to supply the required demands with adequate pressures. The network has to perform adequately under varying demand loads, hydraulic and operational conditions. Operational decisions for these loads are essentially part of the design process, since one cannot separate the so-called design decisions, i.e. the sizing of components, from the operational decisions; they are two inseparable parts of one problem. This work has therefore presented a method for optimizing the design of a water distribution network system using pipe diameter as decision variable under the required demand loading and hydraulic conditions. It has been established that increasing the minimum pressure will lead to the reduction in the required pipe diameter which will in turn reduce the cost of installation. The modelling approach developed can be used by engineers and planners to obtain economical pipe sizes for a network designed to serve newly planned layouts.

Book excerpt: The book summarizes the results of the BMBF funded joint research project EWave (reference 02WER1323F) that was initiated to develop an innovative Decision Support Systems (DSS) for water supply companies. The book is written for automation experts in water supply companies as well as mathematicians who work for infrastructure companies.Operating water supply systems is complex. It has to be ensured that consumers are reliably supplied with a sufficient quantity and quality of water as well as a sufficient water pressure at all times. In addition to a reliable water supply, consumers demand for reasonable prices. For decision making and operational support, the EWave system uses newly developed integrated optimization modules. As a result, the user receives operating schedules on a 15 minute scale. For this purpose, mixed-integer linear and nonlinear mathematical optimization methods are combined. First, a mixed-integer optimization model is solved in order to derive all discrete decisions (primarily pump schedules). The idea here is to approximate the physics by piecewise linear relaxations well enough to come up with the right/optimal decisions. EWave then uses nonlinear optimization and simulation methods to get the physics straight. The process is iterated if necessary. This approach enables globally optimal solutions within an a-priori given quality tolerance.Optimization results obtained in real time yield a potential of energy savings of up to 4-6% daily for the waterworks in the pilot area.

Book excerpt: Traditional mathematical optimization methods, such as linear programming (LP), nonlinear programming (NLP) and dynamic programming (DP), often have drawbacks in practice. To overcome these drawbacks, various meta-heuristic optimization techniques have been developed. This study proposes a new meta- heuristic algorithm which mimics musical performance, and names as Harmony Search (HS). The HS algorithm is applied to five problems: a continuous function optimization, a hydrologic parameter calibration, a traveling salesman problem, an optimal design of water supply network, and an optimal expansion of water supply network. The comparison of solutions obtained by HS and other optimization techniques shows that the HS algorithm can find better solutions in less number of iterations. The new algorithm can solve continuous-variable problems as well as discrete- variable problems without unnecessary restrictions imposed by calculus-based algorithms.

This revised, updated textbook presents a systems approach to the planning, management, and operation of water resources infrastructure in the environment. Previously published in 2005 by UNESCO and Deltares (Delft Hydraulics at the time), this new edition, written again with contributions from Jery R. Stedinger, Jozef P. M. Dijkman, and Monique T. Villars, is aimed equally at students and professionals. It introduces readers to the concept of viewing issues involving water resources as a system of multiple interacting components and scales. It offers guidelines for initiating and carrying out water resource system planning and management projects. It introduces alternative optimization, simulation, and statistical methods useful for project identification, design, siting, operation and evaluation and for studying post-planning issues. The authors cover both basin-wide and urban water issues and present ways of identifying and evaluating alternatives for addressing multiple-purpose and multi-objective water quantity and quality management challenges. Reinforced with cases studies, exercises, and media supplements throughout, the text is ideal for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in water resource planning and management as well as for practicing planners and engineers in the field.
