Book excerpt: Data Mining and Data Visualization focuses on dealing with large-scale data, a field commonly referred to as data mining. The book is divided into three sections. The first deals with an introduction to statistical aspects of data mining and machine learning and includes applications to text analysis, computer intrusion detection, and hiding of information in digital files. The second section focuses on a variety of statistical methodologies that have proven to be effective in data mining applications. These include clustering, classification, multivariate density estimation, tree-based methods, pattern recognition, outlier detection, genetic algorithms, and dimensionality reduction. The third section focuses on data visualization and covers issues of visualization of high-dimensional data, novel graphical techniques with a focus on human factors, interactive graphics, and data visualization using virtual reality. This book represents a thorough cross section of internationally renowned thinkers who are inventing methods for dealing with a new data paradigm. - Distinguished contributors who are international experts in aspects of data mining - Includes data mining approaches to non-numerical data mining including text data, Internet traffic data, and geographic data - Highly topical discussions reflecting current thinking on contemporary technical issues, e.g. streaming data - Discusses taxonomy of dataset sizes, computational complexity, and scalability usually ignored in most discussions - Thorough discussion of data visualization issues blending statistical, human factors, and computational insights

Book Synopsis Latent Semantic Mapping by : Jerome R. Bellegarda
Download or read book Latent Semantic Mapping written by Jerome R. Bellegarda and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In information retrieval, Latent Semantic Mapping enables retrieval on the basis of conceptual content instead of merely matching words between queries and documents. It operates under the assumption that there is some latent semantic structure in the data, which is partially obscured by the randomness of word choice with respect to retrieval. Algebraic and/or statistical techniques are brought to bear to estimate this structure and get rid of the obscuring "noise." This results in a parsimonious continuous parameter description of words and documents, which then replaces the original parameterization in indexing and retrieval. This monograph gives a general overview of the framework and underscores the multi-faceted benefits it can bring to a number of problems in natural language understanding and spoken language processing. It concludes with a discussion of the inherent trade-offs associated with the approach and some perspectives on its general applicability to unsupervised information extraction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Class-tested and coherent, this textbook teaches classical and web information retrieval, including web search and the related areas of text classification and text clustering from basic concepts. It gives an up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the design and implementation of systems for gathering, indexing, and searching documents; methods for evaluating systems; and an introduction to the use of machine learning methods on text collections. All the important ideas are explained using examples and figures, making it perfect for introductory courses in information retrieval for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in computer science. Based on feedback from extensive classroom experience, the book has been carefully structured in order to make teaching more natural and effective. Slides and additional exercises (with solutions for lecturers) are also available through the book's supporting website to help course instructors prepare their lectures.

Book Synopsis On Updating Problems in Latent Semantic Indexing by :
Download or read book On Updating Problems in Latent Semantic Indexing written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors develop new SVD-updating algorithms for three types of updating problems arising from Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) for information retrieval to deal with rapidly changing text document collections. They also provide theoretical justification for using a reduced-dimension representation of the original document collection in the updating process. Numerical experiments using several standard text document collections show that the new algorithms give higher (interpolated) average precisions than the existing algorithms and the retrieval accuracy is comparable to that obtained using the complete document collection.
Book Synopsis Mining Complex Data by : Djamel A. Zighed
Download or read book Mining Complex Data written by Djamel A. Zighed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to gather the most recent works that address issues related to the concept of mining complex data. The whole knowledge discovery process being involved, our goal is to provide researchers dealing with each step of this process by key entries. Actually, managing complex data within the KDD process implies to work on every step, starting from the pre-processing (e.g. structuring and organizing) to the visualization and interpretation (e.g. sorting or filtering) of the results, via the data mining methods themselves (e.g. classification, clustering, frequent patterns extraction, etc.). The papers presented here are selected from the workshop papers held yearly since 2006.
