Book excerpt: It has for some time been the author's opinion that the need exists for a complete, self-contained volume on hydrodynamics addressed to and written in an idiom for geologists and geophysicists actively engaged in the search for hydrocarbons. This book is offered as my attempt to satisfy this need. Explorationists traditionally concern themselves with four basic aspects of oil and gas occurrence, since these constitute the necessary con ditions enhancing the likelihood of subsurface hydrocarbon accumula tions. They are: Trap, Reservoir, Source, and the Fluids themselves. His torically, great attention has been paid to traps and reservoirs, and much pertinent literature on structure, stratigraphy and lithology is available. With respect to sources, an increasing body of literature is becoming avail able in the form of articles, books and research reports in the areas of geochemistry and mineralogy. It is to the largely ignored fourth aspect, the fluids, that this book is directed. In its formulation I have drawn from numerous sources: college physics texts ("hydrodynamics is one of the most difficult subjects in physics"), personal notes from a rigorous two-week course presented by M. K. Hub bert (who literally fathered the discipline), journal articles (some strong and others weak in their treatment of the subject), discussions with expe rienced exploration geologists (some of whom have successfully utilized these procedures and others who were not so sure), and experience gained as well as mistakes made in the course of my own personal oil and gas exploration activities.

Stratigraphic trapping of oil and gas by permeability changes in an aquifer and the amounts of hydrocarbons so trapped are major concerns to the oil industry. The variations of aquifer width and geometry and of the positions in an aquifer where hydrocarbons can be trapped by hydro dynamic forces are intimately intertwined in determining the shape, and thus the volume, of hydrocarbons. Perhaps the seminal work in this area is reflected by King Hubbert's massive review paper "Entrapment of Petroleum under Hydrodynamic Conditions" (Am. Assoc. Pet. Geol. Bull. 37(8), 1954-2026, 1953), in which a wide variety of effects, such as capillarity, buoyancy, surface tension, and salinity of water, are incorporated as basic factors influenc ing the positioning and shaping of hydrocarbon masses in hydrodynami cally active aquifers. In those days, while the basic physics could readily be appreciated, development of a detailed quantitative understanding of the interplay of the various factors in controlling or modulating hydro dynamic shapes was severely limited by computer abilities. Indeed, Hub bert actually constructed and photographed physical models, using alcohol and water, to illustrate basic concepts. It is difficult to obtain an appreciation of the behavior of flow geometries from such experiments when all factors are permitted to vary simultaneously.

There were computer demonstrations as well as a one-day field trip to the geothermic heating plant in Waren. The Regional Group for Eastern Europe of COG EO DATA also met during the conference. Fifty-one papers were presented including eight poster sessions by authors from 14 countries. As was to be expected, there was a large percentage of papers from the East Bloc of European countries, especially the GDR, USSR, and the CSSR with a fair representation from the FRG and USA and a smattering from the nine others. Most of the papers were application oriented and related to the mineral industries. There was ample time for exchange of ideas and dissemination of material.

The areas of exploration have expanded over the past four-and-a-half years to embrace many new, little-known regions, including the Arctic seas. In contrast to the three preceeding decades, the research has been focused on investigating the existing forms, the distribution and accumulation of organic matter in near continental oceanic zones between land and sea, and in river estuaries.
