Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied History, Vol. 1 Among citizens, law-makers, and public officials there is a wide-spread desire for better roads, better schools, better methods of taxation, better labor laws, better safety appliances in hazardous occupations, better insurance against work accidents, better regulation of public utilities, better banking laws, better corrupt practices legislation, better court procedure, and better methods of public administration in general. As citizens, law-makers, and public officials we are all alike deeply concerned in these vital questions of political, industrial, and social welfare. "We may confess ignorance in regard to some of these matters; and at times we may feel that, along with the rest of the world, we are hopelessly groping in the dark. But not one of us is at heart really indifferent to the problems of human betterment - although it is true that our desire for better things, both for ourselves and for others, invariably outruns our knowledge of how wisely to bring them to pass. Real advancement is so elaborately slow that we find it difficult at times to resist the temptation to take short cuts to progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied History Real advancement is so elaborately slow that we find it difficult at times to resist the temptation to take short cuts to progress. There are so many obstacles on the road to social betterment, so many petty mistakes and so many temporary failures on the journey, that we some times lose heart and despair of ever reaching the goal. Fortunately, however, no amount of delay and no number of mistakes can ever wholly extinguish our zeal for real progress; and healthy-minded men and women will con tinne to View failures as the inevitable accompaniment of forward movements. To them every step, whether on the greensward or among the thorns, is a goal attained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kentucky, Vol. 2 Tan late H. P. Peers, of the city of Maysville, laid the foundation for the work which is now presented to the reading community. Mr. Peers designed it to be simply a small Gazetteer of the State; and had collected, and partially arranged for publication, the major part of the materials, comprising a description of the towns and counties. Upon his de cease, the materials passed into the hands of the Author, who determined to remodel them, and make such additions as would give permanency and increased value to the work. He has devoted much labor to this object; but circumstances having rendered its publication necessary at an earlier day than was contemplated, some errors may have escaped, which more time, and a fuller investigation would have enabled him to detect. Serious obstacles have been encountered, in the preparation of the Biographical Sketches. Many of those which appear in the work, were prepared from the personal recollections of the Author; while others have been omitted, because he did not know to whom he could apply for them, or having applied, and in some instances repeatedly, failed in procuring them. This is his apology, for the non-appearance of many names in that department, which are entitled to a distinguished place in the annals of Kentucky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies on Great Subjects, Vol. 2 Ladies and gentlemen, -i have undertaken to speak to you this evening on What is called the Science of History. I fear it is a dry subject; and there seems, indeed, something incongruous in the very connection of such words as Science and History. It is as if we were to talk of the colour of sound, or the longitude of the rule-of-three. Where it is so difficult to make out the truth on the commonest disputed fact in matters passing under our very eyes, how can we talk of a Science in things long past, which come to us only through books? It often seems to me as if History was like a child's box of letters, with which we can spell any word we please. We have only to pick out such letters as we want, arrange them as we like, and say nothing about those which do not suit our purpose. I will try to make the thing intelligible, and I will try not to weary you; but I am doubtful of my success either way. First, however, I wish to say a word or two about the eminent person whose name is connected with this way of looking at History, and whose premature death struck us all with such a sudden sorrow. Many of you, perhaps, recollect Mr. Buckle as he stood not so long ago in this place. He spoke more than an hour Without a note - never repeating himself, never wasting words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in General History In teaching history in higher grades, three points must always be in mind: first, to give each student independent work; next, to subject the results of solitary, individual thought to the freest criticism and discussion in the class-room; last of all, the accepted results of the collective labor must be arranged in compact and logical order, and stowed away in memory. By the' solitary study of the individual, the mind gains power and originality; by the free lance in a free field of class-room work, the mind gains courage, sharpness, speed, and generous temper; by the strict, close sifting of study and discussion, it gains concentration, clearness, and breadth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Study, Vol. 1 of 2 The present work is primarily a history of the Imperial Conference "from the earliest times," i.e., from 1887, giving an account of the proceedings at each of the five meetings, and tracing the development of the Conference as a constitutional institution. It has been necessary to devote some space also to the events of the intervals between the meetings, in order to indicate both the connection between one meeting and another, and the nature of the difficulties with which the Conference has to grapple. But exigencies of space have precluded, for the present, any attempt to discuss in detail various important developments, in the later part of the period, which have either affected the future of the Conference or illustrated the problems to be solved by it. Among these might be mentioned the progress of the Preference movement throughout the Empire, and of the Defence movement; the Union of South Africa; Migration of European and Asiatic races within the Empire; the position in the West Indies, and the later phases of the Atlantic Fisheries dispute. In regard to the Pacific Cable, however, space has been found for a more complete treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
