Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Geology, Vol. 2 The difficulty of writing a book from the apparently opposite points of view of theory and practice is obvious; but when this apparent opposition is based upon mis taken views as to the relative importance of each, this difficulty is at least some excuse for the attempt to reconcile them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Geology, Vol. 2 HE phenomena of hypogene action considered in the T foregoing pages relate almost wholly to the effects produced at the surface. It is evident, however, that these phenomena chie y arise from movements within or beneath the earth's crust, and must be accompanied by very considerable internal changes in the rocks which form that crust. These rocks, subjected to enormous pressure, have been contorted, crumpled, and folded back upon themselves, as if thousands of feet of solid limestones, sandstones, and shales had been merely a few layers of carpet; they have been shattered and fractured; they have in some places been pushed far above their original position, in others depressed far beneath it: so great has been the compression which they have undergone that their com ponent particles have in many places been rearranged, and even crystallized. They have here and there probably been reduced to actual fusion, and have been abundantly invaded by masses of molten rock from below. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Geology, Vol. 1 Circumstances have made it necessary to publish the earlier chapters of this work separately, while the later portion is still appearing in the pages of the Quarry. To those who may read the following pages I would, therefore, point out that these preliminary chapters scarcely give an adequate idea of the scope of the completed work. The scarcity of books dealing with the practical side of geology has been long feI lay no claim to any originality, and have freely used all available sources of information as to the facts recorded in this volume. A more complete acknowledgment of these sources will be published at the conclusion of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 3 Exceptional attention is given to the evolutions of faunas and floras and to their radiations and migrations, while less attention is given to the unrelated features Of the life, however bizarre these may be in themselves. The familiar calling Of the biological roll Under each period is abandoned, and will perhaps be missed; but it has been thought that the mutations of the assemblages of composite life of the great provinces that arose in succession from changes in geographic configuration, are more important as elements in the history of the earth's inhabitants than the classification of life forms as such, par ticularly as such classification is still in a state of transition. The order of treatment of the various forms of life in the several periods is varied according to what is conceived to be their historical impor tance or natural relations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Chemical, Physical, and Stratigraphical In order to follow the descriptive portions of the work relating to foreign geology, it was essential to have a Geological Map of Europe. On submitting my views to Mr. Wm. Topley, he very kindly undertook to carry them out in conjunction with Mr. T. G. Goodchild, one of his colleagues on the Geological Survey of Great Britain. My part has been confined merely to the general plan and the introduction of the Volcanoes. The reduction of the Map from the several Home and Foreign Surveys has been entirely the work of the above-named gentlemen, assisted by Mr. Herbert Goodchild 1. I have only to express my entire satisfaction with the Map, - a satisfaction which may, I trust, be shared by my readers. The topographical details are the work of Messrs. W. And A. Keith Johnston, of Edinburgh. The colours adopted resemble for the most part those proposed by the International Geological Congress, with the exception of the Trias, Permian, and siluro-cambrian, for which we have retained the tints more familiar to English Geologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Geology IN the execution of engineering works, however scien tific in design and clever in workmanship, failure has frequently usurped the place of success, because due attention has not been paid to geological phenomena. Numberless instances might be quoted in proof of this proposition, whilst it is notorious that vast sums' of money have been thrown away in mining speculations which would at once have been characterised as hope less by anyone possessing the slightest acquaintance with the science Of Geology. A late eminent authority (professor J ukes) has stated his belief that the amount Of money fruitlessly expended in a ridiculous search after coal, even within his own experience, would have paid the entire cost of the Government Geological Survey of the United Kingdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Geology: A Treatise on the Industrial Relations of Geological Structure Meanwhile an immense amount Of work has been done in revealing the geological structure of the American Continent, and in making known its rich and varied resources - a work in which many independent investigators and explorers have added much of value to the information gained by the various State and national surveys. The knowledge thus acquired of the existence, the nature, the abundance, and the distribution of substances of practical utility, as well as of the important relations which are sustained by geological structure to hu man well-being and to the successful pursuit of many important callings, is scattered so widely in geological reports, in scientific and technical jour nals, and in the transactions of learned associations, as to be in a great measure inaccessible to the stu dent and the practical man, unless a large library is at hand and abundant leisure to consult it. It seems evident, therefore, that there is need of a treatise such as this aims to be, which, avoiding minute detail, shall give a systematic and compre hensive account of the most important relations which geology sustains to human interests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Need of Quantitative Methods in Applied Geology Geology, like the other sciences, can be of service only to the degree that its methods are exact. In other words, the useful ness of the science is measured by the precision of its technique. The science of geology had its origin in the union of the speculations of philosophy with the small body of facts regard ing rocks, ores, and other minerals accumulated in the course of the winning of the metals and the useful minerals a union of the a priori with the empirical. These two methods of attack have come down to us from the time that man began to make history, and, indeed, both are still extant, although happily no longer of equal authority. According to the Scrip tures, while Tubal Cain was beating out useful implements of brass, cosmic philosophers were expounding how the land was separated from the great deep and how the mountains were brought forth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Being an Inquiry How Far the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface Are Referable to Causes Now in Operation But it is still more remarkable, that in the more widely separated parts the ancient continent, notwithstanding the existence of an uninterrupted land communication, the diversity in the specific character of the respective vegetations is almost as striking. Thus there is found one assemblage of species in China, another in the countries bordering the Black Sea and the Caspian, a third in those surrounding the Mediterranean, a fourth in the great platforms of Siberia and Tartary, and so forth. The distinctness of the groups of indigenous plants, in the same paral lel of latitude, is greatest where continents are disjoined by a wide expanse of ocean. In the northern hemisphere, near the pole, where the extremities of Europe, Asia, and America unite or approach near to one another, a considerable number of the same species of plants are found, common to the three continents. But it has been remarked, that these plants, which are thus so widely diffused in the Arctic regions, are also found in the chain of the Aleutian islands, which stretch almost across from America to Asia, and which may probably have served as the chan nel of communication for the partial blending of the Floras of the adjoin ing regions. It has, indeed, been found to be a general rule, that plants found at two points very remote from each other, occur also in places intermediate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Treatise on Geology, or Facts, Suggestions, and Inductions in That Science, Vol. 2 Whoever enters deeply into the study of Natural Philosophy, with an unbiassed and devotional turn of mind, will perceive that there exists a remarkable connexion between the scriptural records of such philosophy, and the discoveries of modern science, especially in those relating to Geology. As in the prophetic declarations of the Bible, the truth of God's word has been demonstrated by clearer discoveries of the actual fulfilment of those prophecies, so science, if rightly applied will elucidate and become as it were the handmaid and illustrator of divine revelation, leading us to repose an implicit trust in the word of that Being, who in the beginning created all things, and pronounced them "very good."
