For example, we give a shorter proof for the classical result that X' contains a copy of c0 if and only if X contains a complemented copy of l1 . This device also gives many new results pertaining to restrictions of BK spaces and consequences of l1 in X '.

Book excerpt: This is an collection of some easily-formulated problems that remain open in the study of the geometry and analysis of Banach spaces. Assuming the reader has a working familiarity with the basic results of Banach space theory, the authors focus on concepts of basic linear geometry, convexity, approximation, optimization, differentiability, renormings, weak compact generating, Schauder bases and biorthogonal systems, fixed points, topology and nonlinear geometry. The main purpose of this work is to help in convincing young researchers in Functional Analysis that the theory of Banach spaces is a fertile field of research, full of interesting open problems. Inside the Banach space area, the text should help expose young researchers to the depth and breadth of the work that remains, and to provide the perspective necessary to choose a direction for further study. Some of the problems are longstanding open problems, some are recent, some are more important and some are only local problems. Some would require new ideas, some may be resolved with only a subtle combination of known facts. Regardless of their origin or longevity, each of these problems documents the need for further research in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents answers to some natural questions of a general analytic character that arise in the theory of Banach spaces. I believe that altogether too many of the results presented herein are unknown to the active abstract analysts, and this is not as it should be. Banach space theory has much to offer the prac titioners of analysis; unfortunately, some of the general principles that motivate the theory and make accessible many of its stunning achievements are couched in the technical jargon of the area, thereby making it unapproachable to one unwilling to spend considerable time and effort in deciphering the jargon. With this in mind, I have concentrated on presenting what I believe are basic phenomena in Banach spaces that any analyst can appreciate, enjoy, and perhaps even use. The topics covered have at least one serious omission: the beautiful and powerful theory of type and cotype. To be quite frank, I could not say what I wanted to say about this subject without increasing the length of the text by at least 75 percent. Even then, the words would not have done as much good as the advice to seek out the rich Seminaire Maurey-Schwartz lecture notes, wherein the theory's development can be traced from its conception. Again, the treasured volumes of Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri also present much of the theory of type and cotype and are must reading for those really interested in Banach space theory.

Book excerpt: This monograph attempts to present the results known today on bases in Banach spaces and some unsolved problems concerning them. Although this important part of the theory of Banach spaces has been studied for more than forty years by numerous mathematicians, the existing books on functional analysis (e. g. M. M. Day [43], A. Wilansky [263], R. E. Edwards [54]) contain only a few results on bases. A survey of the theory of bases in Banach spaces, up to 1963, has been presented in the expository papers [241], [242] and [243], which contain no proofs; although in the meantime the theory has rapidly deve1oped, much of the present monograph is based on those expository papers. Independently, a useful bibliography of papers on bases, up to 1963, was compiled by B. L. Sanders [219J. Due to the vastness of the field, the monograph is divided into two volumes, ofwhich this is the first (see the tab1e of contents). Some results and problems re1ated to those treated herein have been de1iberately planned to be inc1uded in Volume 11, where they will appear in their natural framework (see [242], [243]).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are devoted to the study of some classical problems in the Geometry of Banach spaces. The novelty lies in the fact that their solution relies heavily on techniques coming from Descriptive Set Theory. Thecentralthemeisuniversalityproblems.Inparticular, thetextprovides an exposition of the methods developed recently in order to treat questions of the following type: (Q) LetC be a class of separable Banach spaces such that every space X in the classC has a certain property, say property (P). When can we ?nd a separable Banach space Y which has property (P) and contains an isomorphic copy of every member ofC? We will consider quite classical properties of Banach spaces, such as “- ing re?exive,” “having separable dual,” “not containing an isomorphic copy of c ,” “being non-universal,” etc. 0 It turns out that a positive answer to problem (Q), for any of the above mentioned properties, is possible if (and essentially only if) the classC is “simple.” The “simplicity” ofC is measured in set theoretic terms. Precisely, if the classC is analytic in a natural “coding” of separable Banach spaces, then we can indeed ?nd a separable space Y which is universal for the class C and satis?es the requirements imposed above.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides the reader with the necessary technical tools and background to reach the frontiers of research without the introduction of too many extraneous concepts. Detailed and accessible proofs are included, as are a variety of exercises and problems. The two new chapters in this second edition are devoted to two topics of much current interest amongst functional analysts: Greedy approximation with respect to bases in Banach spaces and nonlinear geometry of Banach spaces. This new material is intended to present these two directions of research for their intrinsic importance within Banach space theory, and to motivate graduate students interested in learning more about them. This textbook assumes only a basic knowledge of functional analysis, giving the reader a self-contained overview of the ideas and techniques in the development of modern Banach space theory. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the classical Lebesgue spaces Lp (and their sequence space analogues) and spaces of continuous functions. The authors also stress the use of bases and basic sequences techniques as a tool for understanding the isomorphic structure of Banach spaces. From the reviews of the First Edition: "The authors of the book...succeeded admirably in creating a very helpful text, which contains essential topics with optimal proofs, while being reader friendly... It is also written in a lively manner, and its involved mathematical proofs are elucidated and illustrated by motivations, explanations and occasional historical comments... I strongly recommend to every graduate student who wants to get acquainted with this exciting part of functional analysis the instructive and pleasant reading of this book..."—Gilles Godefroy, Mathematical Reviews

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a surge of profound new developments in various aspects of analysis whose connecting thread is the use of Banach space methods. Indeed, many problems seemingly far from the classical geometry of Banach spaces have been solved using Banach space techniques. This volume contains papers by participants of the conference "Banach Spaces and their Applications in Analysis", held in May 2006 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in honor of Nigel Kalton's 60th birthday. In addition to research articles contributed by participants, the volume includes invited expository articles by principal speakers of the conference, who are leaders in their areas. These articles present overviews of new developments in each of the conference's main areas of emphasis, namely nonlinear theory, isomorphic theory of Banach spaces including connections with combinatorics and set theory, algebraic and homological methods in Banach spaces, approximation theory and algorithms in Banach spaces. This volume also contains an expository article about the deep and broad mathematical work of Nigel Kalton, written by his long time collaborator, Gilles Godefroy. Godefroy's article, and in fact the entire volume, illustrates the power and versatility of applications of Banach space methods and underlying connections between seemingly distant areas of analysis.

The up-to-date surveys, authored by leading research workers in the area, are written to be accessible to a wide audience. In addition to presenting the state of the art of Banach space theory, the surveys discuss the relation of the subject with such areas as harmonic analysis, complex analysis, classical convexity, probability theory, operator theory, combinatorics, logic, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations. The Handbook begins with a chapter on basic concepts in Banach space theory which contains all the background needed for reading any other chapter in the Handbook. Each of the twenty one articles in this volume after the basic concepts chapter is devoted to one specific direction of Banach space theory or its applications. Each article contains a motivated introduction as well as an exposition of the main results, methods, and open problems in its specific direction. Most have an extensive bibliography. Many articles contain new proofs of known results as well as expositions of proofs which are hard to locate in the literature or are only outlined in the original research papers. As well as being valuable to experienced researchers in Banach space theory, the Handbook should be an outstanding source for inspiration and information to graduate students and beginning researchers. The Handbook will be useful for mathematicians who want to get an idea of the various developments in Banach space theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of Banach's book [8] in 1932 signified the beginning of a syste matic study of normed linear spaces, which have been the subject of continuous research ever since. In the sixties, and especially in the last decade, the research activity in this area grew considerably. As a result, Ban:ach space theory gained very much in depth as well as in scope: Most of its well known classical problems were solved, many interesting new directions were developed, and deep connections between Banach space theory and other areas of mathematics were established. The purpose of this book is to present the main results and current research directions in the geometry of Banach spaces, with an emphasis on the study of the structure of the classical Banach spaces, that is C(K) and Lip.) and related spaces. We did not attempt to write a comprehensive survey of Banach space theory, or even only of the theory of classical Banach spaces, since the amount of interesting results on the subject makes such a survey practically impossible.

It brings together several angles of view on polynomials, both in finite and infinite setting. Also a rather thorough and systematic view of the more recent results, and the authors work is given. The book revolves around two main broad questions: What is the best smoothness of a given Banach space, and its structural consequences? How large is a supply of smooth functions in the sense of approximating continuous functions in the uniform topology, i.e. how does the Stone-Weierstrass theorem generalize into infinite dimension where measure and compactness are not available? The subject of infinite dimensional real higher smoothness is treated here for the first time in full detail, therefore this book may also serve as a reference book.

The workshop provided participants with a collaborative working atmosphere in which ideas could be exchanged informally. Several papers were initiated during the workshop and are presented here in their final form. Also included are contributions from several experts who were unable to attend the workshop. None of the papers will be published elsewhere. During the workshop, two hours each day were devoted to seminars on current problems in such areas as weak Hilbert spaces, zonoids, analytic martingales, and operator theory, and these topics are reflected in some of the papers in the collection.
