Book excerpt: Time-differential perturbed angular correlation techniques were applied to a systematic study of insulating antiferromagnets and rare-earth intermetallic alloys doped with either /sup 111m/Cd or 111In. The internal magnetic fields and electric field gradients at the radioactive nucleus are deduced from the experimentally measured perturbation factors. The analysis of fluoride, chloride, oxide, and sulfide data shows the systematic variation of the observed supertransferred hyperfine fields with the intervening anion covalency and allows extraction of covalency parameters after the adoption of a simple model. A comparison of the transferred hyperfine field data between fluoride perovskites and the corresponding quadratic layer compounds produces a value for the zero- point spin deviation in magnetically two-dimensional antiferromagnets which is in qualitative agreement with existing theoretical estimates. Paramagnetic shifts due to transferred hyperfine field and field-induced spin-flopping have also been observed. By careful temperature regulation the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization can be plotted next to a diamagnetic impurity in RbMnF3 and MnF2. A shift in the transferred hyperfine field at Cd doped into MnS has been measured under the application of moderate pressures up to 22 kbar. Analysis of the electric field gradients at the In and Sn sites in the rare-earth series RIn3 and RSn3 as functions of temperature and pressure is the basis of a check for valence fluctuations in certain of these alloys. The motivation for this special-topic volume was two-fold. Among the various techniques for probing material properties at the atomic scale, PAC is a somewhat hidden gem. This is partly because PAC requires the use of radioisotopes; thus rendering it almost useless as a non-destructive characterization method. Moreover, there are relatively few PAC isotopes available; so it is not always possible to apply PAC to the most technologically pressing problems. Thus, PAC studies of materials are often more fundamental, and less applied, in nature. One of the goals of this volume was to raise the profile of PAC: in particular, for materials scientists, whose research could well benefit from adding this method to their tool-box. The second goal was to provide a single-source reference which illustrated the applicability of PAC to a wide range of materials. Part 1 consists of a number of comprehensive review articles concerning the technique itself and its state-of-the-art application to magnetic materials, ceramic oxides and nanostructured materials. Part 2 consists of papers which describe ongoing work on TiO2 nanomaterials, L12-structured intermetallic compounds, and wide-bandgap semiconductors. Overall, this is a valuable and unique guide to the subject.

M ossbauer Effect Methodology, Volume 6, records the proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on M6ssbauer Effect Methodology. The symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and concentrated on methodology, applications, and spectroscopy, with special sections on lunar sample work and on standardization and nomenclature. The symposium was held at the Palmer House in Chicago on January 25, 1970. Dr. J. C. Walker presided over the after noon and evening sessions. About two hundred participants attended, reflecting the continued importance of and interest in this series. Austin Science Associates, Elron Electronic Industries, High Voltage Engineering Corporation, and Reuter-Stokes Electronic Components Company demonstrated lines of equipment for M6ssbauer work. The usual high degree of interest in the well-designed commercial instrumentation was evident. The highlight of the symposium was the session on lunar samples. Fortuitously, the timing of the symposium permitted it to provide one ofthe earliest exposures ofthe lunar results to the scientific community. Many papers on other applications were presented, including work on frozen aqueous solutions. Four papers on methodology development made up one session, including reports on a polarized source, on a coincidence technique, and on the use of radio frequency to perturb hyperfine levels. As usual, many of the papers report work in fields remote from basic physics.
