Book excerpt: Volume I in this series promised that the advent of third-generation light sources would enhance synchrotron-based materials research. This second volume fulfills the promise, featuring many experiments that required newer, higher-brightness sources, and could not have been performed with earlier vintage synchrotrons. The book focuses on the characterization of reduced dimensional systems, and highlights studies of surfaces, interfaces, polymers, glasses, thin films, magnetic materials, metal systems, multilayers and electronic materials. Topics include: thin films; magnetic materials; surfaces, clusters, quantum systems, and methods; interfaces (solid/solid, solid/liquid); layered compounds, alloys and novel materials; and microprobe, tomography and microscopy.

This book was released on 2001-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like earlier books in the series, this collection of papers, first published in 2001, brings together the materials science community and the characterization techniques that use synchrotron radiation. Surfaces, interfaces, electronic materials, thin films, carbides, polymers and alloys are all addressed. And while the editors did not anticipate that the cluster of papers treating cementitious materials would necessitate a separate section, it is interesting to see the application of cutting-edge techniques to Portland cement, a very complex materials system long used in engineering structures. Topics include: X-ray diffraction - structures and transformations; X-ray diffraction - stress, strain and texture; microtomography and microdiffraction; SR methods applied to cementitious materials; magnetic materials; X-ray absorption and photoemission; and X-ray scattering and interfaces.

Book excerpt: The individual papers that comprise this monograph are derived from two American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall National Meetings that focused on the current uses of synchrotron radiation (SR) research techniques. The first Symposium was held in Washington, DC, in August 1994, and the second convened in Chicago, IL, in August 1995. The intent of these symposia was to present a broad overview of several current topics in industrial, chemical, and materials-based SR research to a chemically inclined audience. The SR techniques covered were divided roughly into the three general fields of industrial, chemical, and materials science for this purpose. Included within these four categories are environmental, geologic, atomic/molecular, analytical, solid state physics, surface science, and biological applications of SR. There is little doubt that structural biology and environmental science are the largest growth areas in SR research as this monograph goes to press. The spirit of these symposia was to bring together the expert synchrotron radiation user with new and potential users of SR techniques. There are now a preponderance of particle storage rings, located throughout the world, devoted exclusively to the production of SR. There have been great improvements in the particle accelerators and storage rings from which SR emanates. These newest third generation SR sources are the result of the successful collaboration between SR users and accelerator physicists which has made a reality out of experiments never before possible.

Book excerpt: Each year synchrotron facilities, both in the United States and in other countries, are utilized for more applications of synchrotron radiation as they pertain to materials science. Both basic and applied research possibilities are manyfold, including studies of materials mentioned below and those that are yet to be discovered. The combination of synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques with ever-increasing high-resolution microscopy allows researchers to study very small domains of materials in an attempt to understand their chemical and electronic properties. This is especially important for composites and related materials involving material bonding interfaces. This book brings together the materials science community and the characterization techniques that use synchrotron radiation. Topics include surfaces, interfaces, electronic materials, metal oxides, metal sulfides, radiation detector materials, thin films, carbides, polymers, alloys, nanoparticles, and metal composites. Results reported in the volume address recent advances in X-ray absorption and scattering, imaging, tomography, microscopy, and diffraction methods.

Book excerpt: The processing-microstructure-property relationships in steels continue to present challenges to researchers because of the complexity of phase transformation reactions and the wide spectrum of microstructures and properties achievable. This major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels and its implications for the emergence of new steels with enhanced engineering properties.Volume 2 reviews current research on diffusionless transformations and phase transformations in high strength steels, as well as advances in modelling and analytical techniques which underpin this research. Chapters in part one discuss the crystallography and kinetics of martensite transformations, the morphology, substructure and tempering of martensite as well as shape memory in ferrous alloys. Part two summarises research on phase transformations in high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP)-assisted multiphase steels, quenched and partitioned steels, advanced nanostructured bainitic steels, high manganese twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) and maraging steels. The final two parts of the book review advances in modelling and the use of advanced analytical techniques to improve our understanding of phase transformations in steels. With its distinguished editors and distinguished international team of contributors, the two volumes of Phase transformations in steels is a standard reference for all those researching the properties of steel and developing new steels in such areas as automotive engineering, oil and gas and energy production. Alongside its companion volume, this major two-volume work summarises the current state of research on phase transformations in steels Reviews research on diffusionless transformations and phase transformations in high strength steels Examines advances in modelling and the use of advanced analytical techniques to improve understanding of phase transformations in steels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of lasers has made possible a number of optical-based systems and applications such as the compact disc (CD), laser printers, fiber optic communications, laser surgical instruments, etc. Unfortunately, while lasers permit these diverse applications, safety concerns must be addressed. A solution being pursued is the development of optical limiter materials that transmit at low intensities while changing their optical characteristics, e.g. absorption or index of refraction, when exposed to the laser's higher irradiances. Topics covered in this book relate directly to the computational design and synthesis of new optical molecules. Research on the design of limiter devices is also featured. Materials addressed include liquid crystals, organic polymers, organic dyes, C60, colloidal arrays and suspensions, transition metal oxides, semiconductors and photorefractive oxides. Topics include: modelling and solid state optical limiters; thin film and solid state optical limiters; saturable and reverse-saturable absorbers; liquid optical limiters and liquid crystalline and other optical limiters.
