Today there recognition that for understanding vagueness, a fuzzy approach is required. We are just going through ~ transient period. From discussions of general philosophy to practical methods for system analysis. Unfortunately, much of the existing research is scattered. The practitioner interested in these methods face the challenge of sorting through a vast amount of literature to find a core on which to build. One of the objects of this book was to facilitate communication by bringing toge ther different viewpoints and coloring them from a common viewpoint. Since the romanian version appeared, at the very beginning of 1974, there has been a rapid growth in the literature of fuzzy modelling. A minor revision would have left the book quite out-of-date. The opportunity has been taken to correct, clarify, and update. Inexactness is implicit in human behaviour and erare humanum est. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the help we have received in preparing this version. The opportunity to see an english edition was a powerful stimulus, and we are grateful to Salomon Klaczko for making this possible. Another debt is to all fuzzy authors we have quoted. Their fascinating papers kindled our interest in the subject.

Book excerpt: FUZZY LOGIC APPLICATIONS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICSTICS The prime objective of developing this book is to provide meticulous details about the basic and advanced concepts of fuzzy logic and its all-around applications to different fields of mathematics and engineering. The basic steps of fuzzy inference systems starting from the core foundation of the fuzzy concepts are presented in this book. The fuzzy theory is a mathematical concept and, at the same time, it is applied to many versatile engineering fields and research domains related to computer science. The fuzzy system offers some knowledge about uncertainty and is also related to the theory of probability. A fuzzy logic-based model acts as the classifier for many different types of data belonging to several classes. Covered in this book are topics such as the fundamental concepts of mathematics, fuzzy logic concepts, probability and possibility theories, and evolutionary computing to some extent. The combined fields of neural network and fuzzy domain (known as the neuro-fuzzy system) are explained and elaborated. Each chapter has been produced in a very lucid manner, with grading from simple to complex to accommodate the anticipated different audiences. The application-oriented approach is the unique feature of this book. Audience This book will be read and used by a broad audience including applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and industry engineers.

This book was released on 1996-05-30 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of selected papers written by the founder of fuzzy set theory, Lotfi A Zadeh. Since Zadeh is not only the founder of this field, but has also been the principal contributor to its development over the last 30 years, the papers contain virtually all the major ideas in fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic, and fuzzy systems in their historical context. Many of the ideas presented in the papers are still open to further development. The book is thus an important resource for anyone interested in the areas of fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic, and fuzzy systems, as well as their applications. Moreover, the book is also intended to play a useful role in higher education, as a rich source of supplementary reading in relevant courses and seminars. The book contains a bibliography of all papers published by Zadeh in the period 1949-1995. It also contains an introduction that traces the development of Zadeh's ideas pertaining to fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, and fuzzy systems via his papers. The ideas range from his 1965 seminal idea of the concept of a fuzzy set to ideas reflecting his current interest in computing with words — a computing in which linguistic expressions are used in place of numbers.Places in the papers, where each idea is presented can easily be found by the reader via the Subject Index.

Book excerpt: As the systems which form the fabric of modern society become more complex and more interdependent, the need for the understanding of the behavior of such systems becomes increasingly more essential. What are the causes and possible cures for the worldwide inflation which is posing a serious threat to the economic stability and social order of both developed and underdeveloped countries? What are the trade-offs between the urgent need for additional sources of energy and the risks posed by the proliferation of nuclear reactors? How can one devise mass transportation systems which are fast, comforta ble, convenient, and yet not prohibitively expensive? These issues are but some of the more visible problems posed by what might be called the crisis of undercoordination--a crisis rooted in the widen ing gap between the degree of interdependence in the systems of modern society and the degree of coordination which libertarian societies are willing to tolerate. The disquieting implication of this crisis is that to achieve stability through coordination may necessitate the imposition of pervasive controls which may be hard to accept by societies steeped in the democratic tradition. Viewed in this perspective, the need for developing a better understanding of the behavior of large-scale societal systems presents a problem of much more than purely academic importance.

Book excerpt: Since its inception 20 years ago the theory of fuzzy sets has advanced in a variety of ways and in many disciplines. Applications of this theory can be found in artificial intelligence, computer science, control engineering, decision theory, expert systems, logic, management science, operations research, pattern recognition, robotics and others. Theoretical advances, too, have been made in many directions, and a gap has arisen between advanced theoretical topics and applications, which often use the theory at a rather elementary level. The primary goal of this book is to close this gap - to provide a textbook for courses in fuzzy set theory and a book that can be used as an introduction. This revised book updates the research agenda, with the chapters of possibility theory, fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning, expert systems and control, decision making and fuzzy set models in operations research being restructured and rewritten. Exercises have been added to almost all chapters and a teacher's manual is available upon request.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, a large number of very user-friendly tools for fuzzy control, fuzzy expert systems, and fuzzy data analysis have emerged. This has changed the character of this area and started the area of `fuzzy technology'. The next large step in the development occurred in 1992 when almost independently in Europe, Japan and the USA, the three areas of fuzzy technology, artificial neural nets and genetic algorithms joined forces under the title of `computational intelligence' or `soft computing'. The synergies which were possible between these three areas have been exploited very successfully. Practical Applications of Fuzzy Sets focuses on model and real applications of fuzzy sets, and is structured into four major parts: engineering and natural sciences; medicine; management; and behavioral, cognitive and social sciences. This book will be useful for practitioners of fuzzy technology, scientists and students who are looking for applications of their models and methods, for topics of their theses, and even for venture capitalists who look for attractive possibilities for investments.

Book excerpt: Fuzzy Sets and Their Applications to Cognitive and Decision Processes contains the proceedings of the U.S.-Japan Seminar on Fuzzy Sets and Their Applications, held at the University of California in Berkeley, California, on July 1-4, 1974. The seminar provided a forum for discussing a broad spectrum of topics related to the theory of fuzzy sets, ranging from its mathematical aspects to applications in human cognition, communication, decision making, and engineering systems analysis. Comprised of 19 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the calculus of fuzzy restrictions, followed by a discussion on fuzzy programs and their execution. Subsequent chapters focus on fuzzy relations, fuzzy graphs, and their applications to clustering analysis; risk and decision making in a fuzzy environment; fractionally fuzzy grammars and their application to pattern recognition; and applications of fuzzy sets in psychology. An approach to pattern recognition and associative memories using fuzzy logic is also described. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the fields of computer science, engineering, psychology, and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-contained treatment of fuzzy systems engineering, offering conceptual fundamentals, design methodologies, development guidelines, and carefully selected illustrative material Forty years have passed since the birth of fuzzy sets, in which time a wealth of theoretical developments, conceptual pursuits, algorithmic environments, and other applications have emerged. Now, this reader-friendly book presents an up-to-date approach to fuzzy systems engineering, covering concepts, design methodologies, and algorithms coupled with interpretation, analysis, and underlying engineering knowledge. The result is a holistic view of fuzzy sets as a fundamental component of computational intelligence and human-centric systems. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize the direct applicability and limitations of the concepts being discussed, and historical and bibliographical notes are included in each chapter to help readers view the developments of fuzzy sets from a broader perspective. A radical departure from current books on the subject, Fuzzy Systems Engineering presents fuzzy sets as an enabling technology whose impact, contributions, and methodology stretch far beyond any specific discipline, making it applicable to researchers and practitioners in engineering, computer science, business, medicine, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Additionally, three appendices and classroom-ready electronic resources make it an ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in engineering and science.
