Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few years ago, the topic of aerial robots was exclusively related to the robotics community, so a great number of books about the dynamics and control of aerial robots and UAVs have been written. As the control technology for UAVs advances, the great interaction that exists between other systems and elements that are as important as control such as aerodynamics, energy efficiency, acoustics, structural integrity, and applications, among others has become evident. Aerial Robots - Aerodynamics, Control, and Applications is an attempt to bring some of these topics related to UAVs together in just one book and to look at a selection of the most relevant problems of UAVs in a broader engineering perspective.

Book excerpt: Aeroelastic phenomena arising from the interaction of aerodynamic, elastic and inertia forces, and the loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters, have a significant influence upon aircraft design. The prediction of aircraft aeroelastic stability, response and loads requires application of a range of interrelated engineering disciplines. This new textbook introduces the foundations of aeroelasticity and loads for the flexible aircraft, providing an understanding of the main concepts involved and relating them to aircraft behaviour and industrial practice. This book includes the use of simplified mathematical models to demonstrate key aeroelastic and loads phenomena including flutter, divergence, control effectiveness and the response and loads resulting from flight / ground manoeuvres and gust / turbulence encounters. It provides an introduction to some up-to-date methodologies for aeroelastics and loads modelling. It lays emphasis on the strong link between aeroelasticity and loads. It also includes provision of MATLAB and SIMULINK programs for the simplified analyses. It offers an overview of typical industrial practice in meeting certification requirements.

This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical applications and examples highlight this treatment of computational modeling for handling complex flowfields. A reference for researchers and graduate students of many different backgrounds, it also functions as a text for learning essential computation elements. Drawing upon his own research, the author addresses both macroscopic and microscopic features. He begins his three-part treatment with a survey of the basic concepts of finite difference schemes for solving parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic partial differential equations. The second part concerns issues related to computational modeling for fluid flow and transport phenomena. In addition to a focus on pressure-based methods, this section also discusses practical engineering applications. The third and final part explores the transport processes involving interfacial dynamics, particularly those influenced by phase change, gravity, and capillarity. Case studies, employing previously discussed methods, demonstrate the interplay between the fluid and thermal transport at macroscopic scales and their interaction with the interfacial transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity Introduces the latest developments and technologies in the area of nonlinear aeroelasticity Nonlinear aeroelasticity has become an increasingly popular research area in recent years. There have been many driving forces behind this development, increasingly flexible structures, nonlinear control laws, materials with nonlinear characteristics and so on. Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity covers the theoretical basics in nonlinear aeroelasticity and applies the theory to practical problems. As nonlinear aeroelasticity is a combined topic, necessitating expertise from different areas, the book introduces methodologies from a variety of disciplines such as nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis, unsteady aerodynamics, non-smooth systems and others. The emphasis throughout is on the practical application of the theories and methods, so as to enable the reader to apply their newly acquired knowledge Key features: Covers the major topics in nonlinear aeroelasticity, from the galloping of cables to supersonic panel flutter Discusses nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis, numerical continuation, unsteady aerodynamics and non-smooth systems Considers the practical application of the theories and methods Covers nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis and numerical methods Accompanied by a website hosting Matlab code Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity is a comprehensive reference for researchers and workers in industry and is also a useful introduction to the subject for graduate and undergraduate students across engineering disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeroelasticity is the study of flexible structures situated in a flowing fluid. Its modern origins are in the field of aerospace engineering, but it has now expanded to include phenomena arising in other fields such as bioengineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering. The present volume is a teaching text for a first, and possibly second, course in aeroelasticity. It will also be useful as a reference source on the fundamentals of the subject for practitioners. In this third edition, several chapters have been revised and three new chapters added. The latter include a brief introduction to `Experimental Aeroelasticity', an overview of a frontier of research `Nonlinear Aeroelasticity', and the first connected, authoritative account of `Aeroelastic Control' in book form. The authors are drawn from a range of fields including aerospace engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, rotorcraft and turbomachinery. Each author is a leading expert in the subject of his chapter and has many years of experience in consulting, research and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On of the problems facing the aircraft community is landing gear dynamics, especially shimmy and brake-induced vibration. Shimmy and brake-induced vibrations can lead to accidents due to excessive wear and shortened life of gear parts and contribute to pilot and passenger discomfort. To increase understanding of these problems, a literature survey was performed. The major focus is on work from the last ten years. Some older publications are included to understand the longevity of the problem and the background from earlier researchers. The literature survey includes analyses, testing, modeling, and simulation of aircraft landing gear; and experimental validation and characterization of shimmy and brake-induced vibration of aircraft landing gear. The paper presents an overview of the problem, background information, and a history of landing gear dynamics problems and solutions. Based on the survey an assessment and recommendations of the most critically needed enhancements to the state of the art will be presented. The status of Langley work contributing to this activity will be given.
