Book Synopsis Biostatistics and Microbiology: A Survival Manual by : Daryl S. Paulson
Download or read book Biostatistics and Microbiology: A Survival Manual written by Daryl S. Paulson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "nuts and bolts" book provides a condensation of biostatistical methods that applied microbiology researchers need to perform data analyses. Based on the author’s more than two decades of applied research and teaching experience, it is presented in a straight-forward manner, applicable by practicing microbiologists with minimal backgrounds in mathematics. All methods rely only on the use of a basic hand-held calculator. The overriding goal of this book is to ground one’s microbiological expertise and experience in one’s research pursuits, using biostatistics not as a black box, but as a tool.
Book Synopsis Statistical Aspects of the Microbiological Examination of Foods by : Basil Jarvis
Download or read book Statistical Aspects of the Microbiological Examination of Foods written by Basil Jarvis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many biologists, statistics are an anathema; but statistical analysis of quantitative and qualitative data is of considerable importance. Although spreadsheet software provides a diverse range of statistical tools, users are usually unsure which technique should be used. This book provides the basic statistical theory and practice to understand the types of tests frequently needed for the assessment of microbiological data. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required. Even when data can be given to a professional statistician for analysis, the microbiologist needs to have at least a general understanding of the underlying basis of statistical procedures in order to communicate effectively with the statistician. The book contains many worked examples to illustrate the use of the techniques and provides a plethora of references both to standard statistical works and to relevant original scientific papers on food microbiology. Basil Jarvis has had many years of experience in academic, research and industrial food microbiology and is a Past President of the Society for Applied Microbiology. He has published several edited books and more than 200 scientific articles concerned with food microbiology NEW to this edition - chapters on Measurement Uncertainty in Microbiology, Statistical Process Control, Food Safety Objectives, Risk Assessment and Microbiological Criteria and a chapter on Validation of Microbiological Methods by Dr Sharon Brunelle, AOAC consultant Includes additional figures and tables together with many worked examples to illustrate the use of specific procedures in the analysis of data obtained in the microbiological examination of foods
Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis in Microbiology by : Richard A. Armstrong
Download or read book Statistical Analysis in Microbiology written by Richard A. Armstrong and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed primarily at microbiologists who are undertaking research, and who require a basic knowledge of statistics to analyse their experimental data. Computer software employing a wide range of data analysis methods is widely available to experimental scientists. The availability of this software, however, makes it even more essential that microbiologists understand the basic principles of statistics. Statistical analysis of data can be complex with many different methods of approach, each of which applies in a particular experimental circumstance. In addition, most statistical software commercially available is complex and difficult to use. Hence, it is easy to apply an incorrect statistical method to data and to draw the wrong conclusions from an experiment. The purpose of this book is an attempt to present the basic logic of statistics as clearly as possible and therefore, to dispel some of the myths that often surround the subject. The book is presented as a series of 2018Statnotes', many of which were originally published in the 2018Microbiologist' by the Society for Applied Microbiology, each of which deals with various topics including the nature of variables, comparing the means of two or more groups, non-parametric statistics, analysis of variance, correlating variables, and more complex methods such as multiple linear regression and factor analysis. In each case, the relevant statistical methods are illustrated with scenarios and real experimental data drawn from experiments in microbiology. The text will incorporate a glossary of the most commonly used statistical terms and a section to aid the investigator to select the most appropriate test.

Book Synopsis Advances in Aquatic Microbiology by : M.R. Droop
Download or read book Advances in Aquatic Microbiology written by M.R. Droop and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Aquatic Microbiology Volume 1 describes the characteristics of ecological niches for individual microorganisms and the intensities of individual microbiological processes in the course of turnover of various substances in reservoirs. This volume follows Volume 1 of Advances in Microbiology of the Sea book. The opening chapter presents insight to the tradition of Russian limnological microbiology followed by a discussion on conversion of inorganic nitrogen to organic nitrogen, and the microorganisms responsible for assimilatory reactions. The book considers aspects of the reduction of atmospheric dinitrogen and nitrate to ammonia and the incorporation of ammonia into organic compounds. Such considerations will relate particularly to those organisms of significance in aquatic environments. The relations between prey and predator and their significance in the investigation both the behavior of the microorganisms themselves and the prey-predator situation in general are also discussed. Chapter 4 examines how viruses, bacteria, and fungi affect the blue-green algae and the development and regulation of algal blooms. The final two chapters summarize studies in freshwater sediment microbiology and the role of bacteria in water pollution monitoring. This book caters primarily to aquatic microbiologists, but limnological microbiologists, aquatic researchers, scientists, teachers, and students with courses in aquatic microbiology will find this book invaluable.

Book Synopsis Indicators for Waterborne Pathogens by : National Research Council
Download or read book Indicators for Waterborne Pathogens written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-06-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent and forecasted advances in microbiology, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry have made it timely to reassess the current paradigm of relying predominantly or exclusively on traditional bacterial indicators for all types of waterborne pathogens. Nonetheless, indicator approaches will still be required for the foreseeable future because it is not practical or feasible to monitor for the complete spectrum of microorganisms that may occur in water, and many known pathogens are difficult to detect directly and reliably in water samples. This comprehensive report recommends the development and use of a "tool box" approach by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency and others for assessing microbial water quality in which available indicator organisms (and/or pathogens in some cases) and detection method(s) are matched to the requirements of a particular application. The report further recommends the use of a phased, three-level monitoring framework to support the selection of indicators and indicator approaches.Â
Book Synopsis Culture Media for Food Microbiology by : J.E.L. Corry
Download or read book Culture Media for Food Microbiology written by J.E.L. Corry and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-04-23 with total page 511 pages.
