This inverse problem becomes complicated, due to the nonlinear nature of the groundwater flow and transport processes and the associated natural uncertainties. The mathematical challenges arise due to the nonunique characteristics of this problem resulting from the nonunique response of the aquifer system to a set of stresses and the possibility of instead locating only local optimal solutions. The linked simulation-optimization model is an efficient approach to identifying groundwater contamination source characteristics. Efficiency and accuracy of the search for optimum solutions of a linked simulation-optimization depend on the utilized optimization algorithm. This limited study focuses on the application and efficiency of simulated annealing (SA) as the optimization algorithm for solving the source characterization problem. The advantages in using adaptive simulated algorithm (ASA) as an alternative are then evaluated. The possibility of identifying a local optimal solution rather than a global optimal solution when using SA implies failure to solve the source characterization inverse problem. The cost of such inaccurate characterization may be enormous when a remediation strategy is based on the model inferences. ASA is shown to provide a reliable and acceptable alternative for solving this challenging aquifer contamination problem.

Book excerpt: Long-term groundwater monitoring networks can provide essential information for the planning and management of water resources. Budget constraints in water resource management agencies often mean a reduction in the number of observation wells included in a monitoring network. A network design tool, distributed as an R package, was developed to determine which wells to exclude from a monitoring network because they add little or no beneficial information. A kriging-based genetic algorithm method was used to optimize the monitoring network. The algorithm was used to find the set of wells whose removal leads to the smallest increase in the weighted sum of the (1) mean standard error at all nodes in the kriging grid where the water table is estimated, (2) root-mean-squared-error between the measured and estimated water-level elevation at the removed sites, (3) mean standard deviation of measurements across time at the removed sites, and (4) mean measurement error of wells in the reduced network. The solution to the optimization problem (the best wells to retain in the monitoring network) depends on the total number of wells removed; this number is a management decision. The network design tool was applied to optimize two observation well networks monitoring the water table of the eastern Snake River Plain aquifer, Idaho; these networks include the 2008 Federal-State Cooperative water-level monitoring network (Co-op network) with 166 observation wells, and the 2008 U.S. Geological Survey-Idaho National Laboratory water-level monitoring network (USGS-INL network) with 171 wells. Each water-level monitoring network was optimized five times: by removing (1) 10, (2) 20, (3) 40, (4) 60, and (5) 80 observation wells from the original network. An examination of the trade-offs associated with changes in the number of wells to remove indicates that 20 wells can be removed from the Co-op network with a relatively small degradation of the estimated water table map, and 40 wells can be removed from the USGS-INL network before the water table map degradation accelerates. The optimal network designs indicate the robustness of the network design tool. Observation wells were removed from high well-density areas of the network while retaining the spatial pattern of the existing water-table map.

Book excerpt: Solving groundwater problems involves a system of methods in characterization and optimization. However, no matter how theoretically sound a method may be, when it is applied in the field, uncertainty is always an important factor that cannot be neglected. Indeed, a good theory or method has to be validated in field applications, and uncertainty propagates from one stage (e.g. characterization) of the application to the next (e.g. remediation optimization). Thus, it is essential for such methods not only to include uncertainty but also to quantify uncertainty in a practical sense. This dissertation covers three important topics in groundwater remediation: site characterization, remediation optimization, and value of information. First, groundwater contamination site characterization with Monte Carlo methods, specifically, Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, is introduced. Then, another subsurface characterization method, stochastic inverse modeling, is covered with an emphasis on solving large-scale characterization problems, meaning resolving the subsurface heterogeneity with a high-resolution. Both methods provide estimation of the site and uncertainty about the estimation. When these characterization results are used for site management such as remediation management, effects of uncertainty on optimization need to be quantified under the specific context of the remediation problem, and traditional measures of uncertainty such as variance and correlation coefficients cannot handle this job well because they do not necessarily depict the severity of uncertainty. In this dissertation, value of information (VOI), defined as the expected cost with the present state of uncertainty minus the expected cost if uncertainty were fully or partially removed, is proposed as a context-specific measure of uncertainty, i.e., it is dependent on site conditions and remediation strategies as well as specific remediation objectives and unit costs. Several laboratory and numerical applications on hydraulic tomography and DNAPL contamination remediation are included in this dissertation to show the efficacy of the methods proposed.

Once a contaminant has been initially detected, an effective algorithm is required to recover the characteristics of the contaminantââ'¬â"¢s source based on dynamically varying streams of sensor observations. This dissertation focuses on the development and demonstration of a new algorithm to characterize a contaminant source quickly, accurately, and robustly. An evolutionary algorithm (EA)-based adaptive dynamic optimization technique (ADOPT) is proposed, potentially providing a real-time response. In addition to offering adaptive capacity in a dynamic environment, this algorithm is able to assess the degree of non-uniqueness in the solution through multi-population scheme. This approach, however, requires a large number of time-consuming simulation runs to evaluate possible solutions, and it may be difficult to converge on the best solution or a set of alternative solutions within a reasonable computational time. For this reason, it is desirable to appropriately reduce the decision space over which the optimization procedure must search to reduce the computational burden and to produce faster convergence. A logistic regression-based prescreening technique is investigated in order to reduce the decision space by estimating the probability of a node being a contaminant source location. When a small set of potential source nodes are identified, applying the local search procedure to this set of locations is computationally efficient and potentially good at identifying the best solution. The EA-based ADOPT is then integrated with a logistic regression analysis and a local improvement method to expedite the convergence and to solve the problem potentially faster. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated for contamination source identification problems in two illustrative water distribution networks.
