Book excerpt: A stochastic model is used to predict the growth of delamination in graphite/epoxy laminates subjected to cyclic loading. The advantage of this model is that both the mean and variance associated with the growth of delamination is predicted. Understanding and predicting the variability associated with the delamination growth process is essential to the estimation of the reliability of composite structures. The empirical nature of the model has been minimized through the introduction of fracture mechanics parameters into the stochastic model. This has been accomplished by assuming that the mean of the stochastic model is represented by a fracture mechanics power law based on strain energy release rate. The applicability of the model is demonstrated through an experimental program that utilizes three laminate geometries. The results of the experimental evaluation illustrate the ability of the model to predict both the mean and variance of the delamination growth process in composite laminates subjected to cyclic loading.

Book excerpt: Results of an experimental investigation of damage development in T300/5208 graphite epoxy laminates subjected to tension-tension cyclic loading are reported. The concept of laminate stiffness reduction as a damage analogue is shown to be a valuable means of test control and damage interpretation. The relationship between stiffness and number of cycles is shown to be unique for each laminate type studied, each possessing three distinct stages, but markedly different among the laminate types. By using two complementary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, edge replication and penetrant-enhanced stereo X- ray radiography along with a method for deploying fatigue-damaged specimens, the stages of stiffness reduction were found to correspond variously to the predominance of matrix cracking or delamination or interactions of these matrix damage modes. A number of subordinate matrix damage modes including interior delamination, microcracking, and longitudinal splitting are identified with the matrix cracks which produce them.

Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. However, since they are a relatively new material technology, the key damage modes need to be characterized and studied in order to guide material development and structural design. Previous work has identified delamination of the metal layers from the composite plies as a key damage mode. In this paper, results are presented for high temperature (177° C), tension-tension fatigue tests performed on [Ti/0/90/02]s TiGr laminates containing horizontal facesheet seams. Horizontal seams in the titanium facesheets are a likely origination point for delamination. Delamination growth rates were monitored by intermittent direct observation and continuous stiffness monitoring. The cyclic delamination growth rate was found to follow a power law relationship with the applied strain energy release rate, with an exponent of 2. This work provides insight into the delamination growth behavior and provides an empirical starting point for finite element models of delamination growth.

Tension fatigue tests were conducted on quasi-isotropic and orthotropic glass epoxy, graphite epoxy, and glass/graphite epoxy hybrid laminates. Edge delamination onset data were used to generate plots of strain energy release rate as a function of cycles to delamination onset. These plots were then used along with strain energy release rate analyses of delaminations initiating at matrix cracks to predict local delamination onset. Stiffness loss was measured experimentally to account for the accumulation of matrix cracks and for delamination growth. Fatigue failure was predicted by comparing the increase in global strain resulting from stiffness loss to the decrease in laminate failure strain resulting from delaminations forming at matrix cracks through the laminate thickness. Good agreement between measured and predicted lives indicated that the through-thickness damage accumulation model can accurately describe fatigue failure for laminates where the delamination onset behavior in fatigue is well characterized, and stiffness loss can be monitored in real time to account for damage growth. Book excerpt: As part of an overall effort to develop durability and damage tolerance methodology for graphite-epoxy composites, coupon specimens have been developed to measure the fundamental static fracture and subcritical growth behavior of delaminations. Two basic designs, one for the tensile opening mode (Mode I) and one for the forward shear mode (Mode II), are described. These specimens were used to characterize the behavior of two types of interfaces (0/0 and 0/90) for static fracture, constant amplitude fatigue, and spectrum fatigue. Fracture mechanics technology was applied through the principles of strain-energy release rate. Three-dimensional finite-element analyses were employed to interpret the experimental results. A simple growth law was shown to correlate the constant-amplitude and spectrum-growth data. It was found that the applied cyclic load must be nearly equal to the critical static load to obtain observable growth in the tensile opening mode. On the other hand, the graphite-epoxy delamination growth rate in the forward shear mode is comparable to the aluminum growth rate in tension, which suggests that shear is the chief subcritical growth mode for graphite-epoxy.
