A large number of ASTM A533, Grade B steel, bend and tension specimens with varying crack lengths were tested throughout the transition region. Cleavage fracture toughness scaling models were utilized to correct the data for the loss of constraint in short crack specimens and tension geometries. The toughness scaling models were effective in reducing the scatter in the data, but tended to over-correct the results for the short crack bend specimens. A proposed ASTM Test Practice for Fracture Toughness in the Transition Range, which employs a master curve concept, was applied to the results. The proposed master curve over predicted the fracture toughness in the mid-transition and a modified master curve was developed that more accurately modeled the transition behavior of the material. Finally, the modified master curve and the fracture toughness scaling models were combined to predict the as-measured fracture toughness of the short crack bend and the tension specimens. It was shown that when the scaling models over correct the data for loss of constraint, they can also lead to non-conservative estimates of the increase in toughness for low constraint geometries.

The critical crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and the critical J-integral have been measured as a function of temperature for ten fracture specimen configurations of ABS grade EH36 steel. A technique was developed to experimentally measure crack-tip constraint. Constraint decreased with crack blunting. This relaxation in constraint was modeled by a simple spring analog. The model was used to predict ductile-to-brittle transition curves for hypothetical structures. Some of the applications and limitations of the model are discussed.

If in the transition regime, KIc is defined as the fracture toughness at the onset of the brittle mode of fracture and KIJ is defined as the fracture toughness at the onset of ductile crack growth, then KIc > KIJ. 2. The ductile crack extension obtained between the initiation of ductile crack growth and the onset of brittle fracture is defined by the elastic-plastic crack growth resistance curve. 3. KIc cannot be reached without generating the appropriate amount of ductile crack extension.

Book excerpt: Fracture properties of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) steels show large variations with changes in temperature and irradiation levels. Brittle behavior is observed at lower temperatures and/or higher irradiation levels whereas ductile mode of failure is predominant at higher temperatures and/or lower irradiation levels. In addition to such temperature and radiation dependent fracture behavior, significant scatter in fracture toughness has also been observed. As a consequence of such variability in fracture behavior, accurate estimates of fracture properties of RPV steels are of utmost importance for safe and reliable operation of reactor pressure vessels. A cohesive zone based approach is being pursued in the present study where an attempt is made to obtain a unified law capturing both stable crack growth (ductile fracture) and unstable failure (cleavage fracture). The parameters of the constitutive model are dependent on both temperature and failure probability. The effect of irradiation has not been considered in the present study. The use of such a cohesive zone based approach would allow the modeling of explicit crack growth at both stable and unstable regimes of fracture. Also it would provide the possibility to incorporate more physical lower length scale models to predict DBT. Such a multi-scale approach would significantly improve the predictive capabilities of the model, which is still largely empirical.

Book excerpt: Crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) tests and large deformation finite element analyses have been carried out for double-edge notched tension [DE(T)] specimens with a/W = 0.9 [DE(T)9] and 0.5 [DE(T)5], single-edge notched tension [SE(T)] specimens with a/W = 0.5 [SE(T)5], three-point bend [SE(B)] specimens with a/W = 0.5 [SE(B)5] and 0.1 [SE(B)1], and center-cracked tension [M(T)] specimens with a/W = 0.5 [M(T)5]. The results of the CTOD tests show that the fracture toughness of the material decreases, and a ductile-brittle fracture transition takes place as the in-plane plastic constraint of the specimens increases. In M(T)5 and SE(B)1 specimens with low constraints, fracture is ductile and no transition occurs. In DE(T)5, SE(T)5, and SE(B)5 with higher constraints, fracture initiates by ductile tearing and then changes to cleavage. In the DE(T)9 specimens with the highest constraint, fracture initiates by brittle cleavage. The results of the finite element analyses show that the maximum achievable tensile stress outside the finite strain zone ahead of the crack tip increases with increasing plastic constraint in the order of M(T)5, SE(B)1, DE(T)5, SE(T)5, SE(B)5, and DE(T)9. The ductile-brittle transition is due to the maximum tensile stress ahead of the crack tip reaching the critical stress for cleavage fracture as the plastic constraint increases.

This new work extends the model to also include the influence of ductile crack extension prior to cleavage. Ductile crack extensions of 10-15 X the initial crack tip opening displacement at initiation are considered in plane-strain, finite element computations The finite element results demonstrate a significant elevation in crack-tip constraint due to macroscopic 'sharpening' of the extending tip relative to the-blunt tip at the initiation of growth. However this effect is offset partially by the additional plastic deformation associated with the increased applied J required to grow the crack. The initial a/W ratio, tearing modulus, strain hardening exponent and specimen size interact in a complex manner to define the evolving near-tip conditions for cleavage fracture. The paper explores development of the new model, provides necessary graphs and procedures for its application and demonstrates the effects of the model on fracture data sets for two pressure vessel steels (A533B and A515). In this region cleavage fracture could occur after some amount of ductile tearing. The model takes into account the competition between the nucleation of voids at second phase inclusions leading to ductile fracture and the nucleation of unstable micro cracks initiated at second phase inclusions leading to cleavage fracture. The model was tested on four point bend specimens of a ferritic steel tested in the brittle to ductile transition region. It was shown that there could be a significant amount of ductile crack growth before the specimens failed by cleavage. Two different crack growth simulations were performed to investigate the stresses ahead of a ductile growing crack. One simulation takes into account the softening of the material in the process zone, due to damage, around a quasistatically ductile growing crack. The second simulation neglects this damage. It was found that the crack opening stress near the crack tip in the process zone is significantly lower than in the analysis neglecting the effect of damage. Further from the crack tip, outside the damage zone the crack opening stresses are similar in both simulations.
