Book excerpt: Le développement technologique dans le domaine des télécommunications, ainsi que des systèmes de détection, a accru ces dernières années la nécessité de signaux de référence présentant une très haute pureté spectrale. L'augmentation des débits, la saturation des bandes de fréquence ainsi que les performances imposées pour la détection radar ont ouvert la voie à la génération micro-onde par l'optique. Ces références de fréquence sont souvent issues d'oscillateurs optoélectroniques (OEO). Ces oscillateurs intègrent un élément de stockage de l'énergie au travers de résonateurs ou de longues lignes à retard fibrées afin d'augmenter leur facteur qualité et permettant ainsi d'atteindre des performances supérieures aux signaux multipliés à partir de sources basses fréquences ou directement à partir d'oscillateurs micro-ondes à résonateur diélectrique (DRO). Une topologie originale d'oscillateurs optoélectroniques a été proposée à la fin des années 1990 par une équipe américaine : il s'agit de remplacer le résonateur passif nécessitant un verrouillage du laser sur ce dernier par un résonateur actif, intégrant un amplificateur optique. Ce résonateur actif, un laser à blocage de modes, permet un couplage entre l'oscillation optique du laser et l'oscillation optoélectronique. On parle alors d'oscillateur optoélectronique couplé (COEO). Les performances du COEO sont étroitement liées à la pureté spectrale du signal issu du laser à blocage de modes. Ce travail de thèse traite de l'étude et de l'optimisation de ces systèmes. Une étude approfondie sur le bruit dans les amplificateurs optiques a tout d'abord été menée afin de déterminer quel type d'amplificateur choisir pour le COEO et sous quelles conditions l'amplification optique apporte un bruit de phase minimal. Ensuite, un COEO à 10 GHz a été réalisé, présentant un très faible bruit de phase atteignant - 132 dBc/Hz à 10 kHz de la porteuse. Un modèle a par ailleurs été implémenté, permettant de déterminer a posteriori l'efficacité du couplage et ainsi la bande de verrouillage entre l'oscillation optoélectronique et le laser à blocage de modes. Ce couplage interne dépend fortement de la dynamique du système. Cependant, les différents effets non linéaires qui ont lieu dans l'amplificateur à semiconducteur et les fibres ne permettent pas d'obtenir un modèle analytique. Un modèle itératif a alors été proposé afin d'obtenir les propriétés de l'enveloppe complexe lentement variable du peigne de fréquence généré en sortie du laser dont la photodétection conduit à la puissance RF générée par le COEO. Le COEO génère un peigne de fréquence suffisamment large pour produire des harmoniques RF supérieurs à la fréquence de répétition du laser à blocage de modes, si les modes longitudinaux espacés de plusieurs intervalles spectraux libres (ISL) sont en phase. Le modèle itératif développé permet, à partir des paramètres expérimentaux de déterminer le spectre optique ainsi que la distribution de phase à l'intérieur de celui-ci. Il est possible alors d'augmenter la puissance d'une harmonique en sortie de la photodiode par un ajout d'éléments dispersifs. Cette multiplication de fréquence permet la génération de signaux à haute pureté spectrale en bande millimétrique. Une démonstration expérimentale à 90 GHz a été proposée, basée sur un COEO fonctionnant à 30 GHz. Ces résultats sont prometteurs et une intégration du COEO dans un boîtier thermalisé ainsi qu'une gestion plus fine de la dispersion des fibres peut permettre des améliorations significatives sur le bruit de phase du système.

Les performances actuelles, rendues accessibles par le développement de fibres à larges aires modales et le concept d'amplification à dérive de fréquence, sont toutefois complexes à mettre oeuvre et limitées par l'utilisation de composants massifs pour les étapes de compression et d'étirement des impulsions. Ces travaux de thèse, à la fois expérimentaux et numériques, avaient pour objectif d'explorer des régimes dynamiques originaux basés sur l'utilisation de fibres actives spécifiques combinant large aire modale et propriétés dispersives adéquates pour la génération d'impulsions ultra-courtes de haute énergie. Les études numériques ont ainsi permis de montrer que des régimes impulsionnels à haute dispersion normale pouvaient être atteints en exploitant les phénomènes de résonnance et de couplage de modes dans des fibres de Bragg ou à profil en W. L'étude de l'influence des paramètres de la cavité laser sur le mécanisme de verrouillage de modes a permis d'identifier des configurations attractives pour la montée en puissance. La mise en oeuvre expérimentale de ces concepts a notamment permis le développement d'une source laser à soliton dissipatif produisant des impulsions énergétiques (38 nJ, 700 fs après compression) à des longueurs d'ondes autour de 1560 nm, record pour ce type d'oscillateur. La réalisation expérimentale de sources ultra-rapides basées sur des fibres actives spécifiques combinées au phénomène de couplage de mode ont permis d'identifier les potentialités et limitations de ces architectures originales à fortes dispersions totales pour la montée en énergie.

The first part of this thesis consists in the study and the realization of erbium-doped fibre laser passively Q-switched by iron-doped InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well semiconductor saturable absorber. Moreover simple modelling based on the rate equations has been developed and allows the understanding of the main output characteristics of our laser such as the shape of the pulse. Then, we realize a passively mode-locked fibre laser. The amplifyer medium is an erbium-doped fibre and the ultrafast saturable absorber is a iron-doped InGaAs/InP multiple quantum wells structure. In this configuration, self-starting mode-locking is obtained. 700 fs pulses are measured with both saturable absorber and polarization effects. In the third part of this study, we use ultra-fast saturable absorber (500 fs) as a cavity end-mirror. 300 fs optical pulses are obtained. With the same cavity, Saturable Absorber Incorporating NanoTubes (SAINT) can self-start stable mode-locking whatever the dispersion of the cavity (soliton or Stretched-pulse regime). More than 150 pJ pulse energy is obtained and the pulse duration is included between 700 fs (soliton) and few picoseconds (stretched pulse). Finally we have realized a high-energy fibre laser Q-switched by semiconductor saturable absorber GaAs. The amplifyer medium is a double-clad ytterbium-doped fibre. We obtain optical pulses of several micro-joules (7 μJ) with duration of 1 μs. The laser can be tuned over 30 nm around the central wavelength (1,07 μm).

L'effet Kerr, qui se manifeste quel que soit l'énergie de propagation et de pompage, va engendrer le phénomène de l'auto modulation de phase (SPM) qui se traduira par un élargissement spectral. La SPM peut se voir aussi dans l'interaction entre les deux ondes qui se propagent le long des axes lents et rapides du guide (XPM). Dans un guide uniforme passif, cette auto modulation de phase en se conjuguant avec la dispersion chromatique du guide peut conduire à l'impulsion soliton, mais ce cadre doit être largement dépassé pour aborder la mise en forme d'impulsions dans un système dissipatif, tel qu'une cavité laser. Ce cadre élargi est celui du soliton dissipatif. Dans ce travail, nous avons passé en revue la fibre optique dopée en tant que milieu actif. Nous avons présenté le principe physique du blocage de modes, en introduisant l'absorbant saturable virtuel reposant sur l'évolution non linéaire de la polarisation (ENLP). Dans la partie expérimentale, on s'est penché plus particulièrement sur de nouvelles dynamiques à haute cadence (multi-GHz) d'un laser à fibre dopée, à modes bloqués. Avant de présenter et positionner notre travail, on s'est intéressé dans un premier temps à ce qui a été publié sur la génération des trains d'impulsions ultracourtes à haute cadence. Nous avons étudié chaque configuration, allant de la génération de régime harmonique à haute cadence par le blocage de modes habituel jusqu'aux techniques utilisant l'instabilité de modulation avec un filtrage interférométrique (μcavité, F.P, SFBG). En évaluant les opportunités de réalisation de chacune, nous avons été attirés par la configuration de Mao, publiée dans Sci. Reports, toute fibrée, qui sera le premier volet de notre contribution expérimentale. Effectivement, dans un premier temps nous avons repris les travaux de Mao et al. où le MZI est pris en série dans la cavité fondamentale. Dans le souci d'apporter plus de stabilité, nous avons proposé une autre configuration où le MZI est pris dans une boucle de recirculation qui permettra plus de filtrage des modes cavité en phase. Cette stabilité du régime impulsionnel, à haute cadence, a été observée en temps réel.
