Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Scab At this time it was not known to the writer that the latter had been suspected by others as the permanent stage of the apple scab fungus. An examination of literature, however, showed that Goethe as early as 1887 had suggested the relationship of the scabs of pears and apples to mature stages on the dead leaves that Bre feld in 1891 figured a temporary spore stage obtained from a Ven turia on pear that was similar to the leaf scab of that plant and that Aderhold, 1894 and later, had made a very comprehensive study of the scabs of apple, pear, and cherry and had connected them with species of Venturias that develop on the dead leaves of these hosts. From the results of these and the writer's investigations there is no doubt that apple scab is merely a parasitic summer stage of a permanent saprophytic fungus occuring on the fallen leaves. It also appears to be this latter form that is largely (in its immature condition) responsible for carrying the fungus through the winter. At least the writer has been unable to find any satisfactory evi dence that the scab stage persists on the young twigs, as has been stated by some investigators, and by means of a new crop of scab spores in the spring spreads the disease to the young fruit and leaves. Neither was there found any evidence that the old spores lived over the winter on the fallen leaves, or that the mycelium in these gave rise to a new crop for spring infection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 As a rule we have found that with the Ben Davis spray injury from bor-deaux mixture was so severe that it equalled or more than offset the beneficial effects derived from the control of apple scab. While a much better grade of fruit from the standpoint of keeping quality and freedom from disease has been the invariable result from trees sprayed with this mate rial the russeted appearance of the skin materially reduced its market value. In other words, while the injurious effects of bordeaux mixture and certain other sprays upon the fruit of susceptible varieties like the Ben Davis are concerned almost wholly with the appearance of the fruit and not with its keep ing quality or value as an article of food the price it will bring on the market is just as effectually reduced as though the lat ter were the case. If the selling price of apples depended more on the quality of the fruit and less on the appearance of the skin certain of the difficulties now experienced in spraying would disappear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maine Apple Diseases In this State fungi are responsible for the major part Of the loss from the diseases under consideration. Fungi are low forms Of plant life made up Of threads of microscopic size. These threads constitute the mycelium of the fungus, which penetrates into the tissues Of the host, causing the death of the cells which compose these tissues and living upon their con tents. The conspicuous portions Oi the fungus which are seen on the surface of the host are in most cases the fruiting organs. Instead Of seeds these fruiting organs produce various forms and in various ways, often in vast numbers, more simple bodies which are known as spores. In combatting apple diseases caused by fungi, the chief Object is to prevent the formation of these spores, or if they are formed to destroy them before they can germinate and gain a foothold upon healthy fruit, foliage, or wood. This is more frequently brought about bv destroying the diseased portions as soon as Observed and by coating or spraying the healthy parts with some substance which will prevent the germination and destroy the spores if by chance they fall thereon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Blotch: A Serious Disease of Southern Orchards It appears, therefore, that apple blotch is the most destructive disease of the southern half of the apple belt. Occasionally bitter rot, as in the year 1900, overshadows all other diseases in destructive ness, but taken year by year apple blotch is more serious. Fortunately the disease Is amenable to treatment and can not gain a foothold In well sprayed orchards. It is not sporadic in its nature and must accumulate on the twigs several years before a serious outbreak on the fruit can occur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on the Diseases of Plants It is quite natural to start with the apple in the consideration, and with the light-coloured anthracnose, known as the Ripe Rot (gloeosporium fracti genum, Up to this time the only other fruit upon which this fungus was known to grow is the grape, the Division of Pathology of the Department of Agriculture having recently established this fact. It was an easy matter to verify this work, but of more interest to find that when the virus was transferred to the flesh of the peach it quickly developed in a vigorous way, and produced a Similar patch of decay not identical in appearance because of a difference in texture of the host, but the spore masses and spores were the same. In like manner it was taken to the pear and the quince, so that the same ripe rot fungus produces its destructive work upon the three sorts of fruit of the apple class. Turning now to the tomato group, the chart shows that the dotted lines run to each of these - namely, the pepper, egg-plant, and the tomato. Noting the arrows in this connection, it will be seen that the native Gloeosporium of the pepper and of the tomato, supposed to be different species and distinct from the one upon the apple, were cultivated upon the latter fruit, where each produced the ripe rot of the apple. Following the oval around to the right, beginning with the apple, it will be seen that, besides those fruits already mentioned, the arrows point to the banana, bean, and lemon, all fruits representing widely different groups of plants.
