To him who would approach the subject of Christian Apologetics, two introductory questions suggest themselves: 1. Why do I believe that I am a Christian? 2. Why am I a Christian in my belief? These questions differ more in meaning than in language. The first looks for its answer to the past: and personal and sacred experiences are recalled. We may answer a. From the remembrance of sudden conversion; of a gradual tendency towards Christ from early education: From something which has opened the blind eyes, or softened the heart. b. Our present love and obedience give us an additional source of faith in the fact that we are Christians. To the second question, why am I a Christian in belief? and not a Jew, Pagan, Atheist, various answers may be given. a. Providential reasons may have decided; early education or circumstances. But you must be able to point to some elements of Christianity which have secured your deliberate choice. You cannot say as a rational believer, that you merely follow the faith of your fathers. b. Each sets up its claim of supernatural origin. But, one by one, as they are subjected to a critical analysis, and the severe test of truth is faithfully applied, their claims, which are fundamental, are found to consist in myth, not in fact. Christianity, which is founded on the Old and the New Testaments, is an exception to the above statement. The more severe, the broader, and the more scientific the tests which have been applied to Christianity, the more invulnerable has it proved to such attacks. Recognizing the facts set up in the Holy Scriptures, first, that they are a revelation from God, setting forth both the religious and political history of Israel which, under the guidance of God, was in due time to bring forth a Saviour that would redeem the world from sin and death; second, that in the person of Jesus Christ, the world's Saviour and Redeemer has actually come, and that the statements made in the Old and the New Testaments concerning the development of Israel and the records respecting Jesus Christ are historically true - these are some of the claims set forth in the Christian system -the Christian apologist ought to see that his defense of Christianity must be more than simply negative. As a satisfactory working basis for religious hope and activity he must prove the facts of Christianity beyond a reasonable doubt. To do this has been the intent of the author. In the following chapters an attempt has been made to reproduce in English form the classical arguments which are set forth in text-books of Apologetics written chiefly in Latin, French and German. The aim has been to avoid as far as possible technical nomenclature, so that Senior Students of Secondary Schools may follow the trend of the discussion. If such students are called upon to unravel the intricacies of the Differential and Integral Calculus set for B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, it is surely not too much to expect that the metaphysical principles which are the support of Natural and Supernatural Religion should have some share of their attention. In the development of the Apologetic argument, I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Dominican work - Pere Garrigou-Lagrange's "Dieu, son existence et sa Nature," and to another work of great merit, "Foi et Raison," written by M. le Chanoine Valvekens. Whilst following these authors in the more formal and "scholastic" portions of their works, I have not hesitated to adopt another treatment if such appeared preferable.
