Book excerpt: Aperture Alike began when the author first walked into a rock-climbing gym, and soon after, a community, more than a decade ago. A community held up by friends, mentors, and unlikely prophets of the steep, which quickly presented a fantastic, intoxicating path; a lifestyle without equal. While the sensational, rugged, and itinerant chapters - from high peaks to depraved inner landscapes – of the outdoor life came together, one facet soon became clear. The inner journeys of those friends, mentors, and homely prophets far exceeded any outward feat of will. Aperture Alike attempts to shine light into the deeper realities, the inner character swings and the unplanned arcs of those who have both devoted themselves to an outside craft, and to defining themselves apart from it. Aperture Alike is a collection of short stories about community, about people pursuing their own immutably holy center point, in the midst of a life defined by trials and tribulation.

Book excerpt: In his moving debut collection, Matt Rasmussen faces the tragedy of his brother's suicide, refusing to focus on the expected pathos, blurring the edge between grief and humor. In "Outgoing," the speaker erases his brother's answering machine message to save his family from "the shame of dead you / answering calls." In other poems, once-ordinary objects become dreamlike. A buried light bulb blooms downward, "a flower / of smoldering filaments." A refrigerator holds an evening landscape, "a tinfoil lake," "vegetables / dying in the crisper." Destructive and redemptive, Black Aperture opens to the complicated entanglements of mourning: damage and healing, sorrow and laughter, and torment balanced with moments of relief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as an advanced text for courses in antennas, with a focus on the mature but vital background field of aperture antennas. The book is aimed at final year, MSc, PhD and Post-Doctoral students, as well as readers who are moving from academia into industry, beginning careers as wireless engineers, system designers, in R&D, or for practising engineers. It assumes the reader has undertaken an earlier course of study on Maxwell's equations, fields and waves. Some of these topics are summarised in the early few chapters in order to provide continuity and background for the remaining chapters. The aperture antennas covered include the main types of horns, reflectors and arrays as well as microstrip patches, reflectarrays and lenses. To provide more than a superficial treatment of arrays, the topic of mutual coupling is covered in greater detail than most similar books in the area. Also included is an introduction to arrays on non-planar surfaces, which is of importance for applications that involve curved surfaces such as in aerodynamics or for making aperture antennas unobtrusive. A chapter is included on some modern aperture antennas to illustrate design techniques beyond the most common types of aperture antennas described in the early chapters. This is to show where advances have recently been made and where they could be improved in the future. Also included are selected topics of a practical nature for aperture antennas, namely fabrication and measurement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general formulation for aperture problems is given in terms of the method of moments. It applies to any two regions isolated except for coupling through the aperture. The aperture characteristics are expressed in terms of two aperture admittance matrices, one for each region. The admittance matrix for one region is independent of the other region, and hence can be used for any problem involving that region and aperture. The solution can be represented by two generalized n-port networks connected in parallel with current sources. The current sources are related to the tangential magnetic field which exists over the aperture region when the aperture is closed by an electric conductor. Explicit formulations are given for two problems, that of an aperture in a conducting plane with plane-wave excitation, and that of a waveguide feeding an aperture in a conducting plane.

Book excerpt: This unique resource presents the principles of meter wave ground imaging radar focusing on foliage penetration. Scattering of VHF/UHF radar signals are presented including the basic laws of electromagnetism, homogeneous media, media discontinuities/non-flat media discontinuities, and ground reflectivity. The book introduces meter wavelength synthetic aperture radar, bandwidth, and SAR imaging principles, including moving objects and also compares collected SAR data. Meter wavelength SAR system design and processing is explored, highlighting low frequency SAR design aspects, characterization of additive noise, antenna system basics, waveforms and emission adaptation which is critical material to the advancement in sensors and signal processing for below ground imaging by the energy industry and governments worldwide. The FFBP method of processing, explicit treatment of base 2 FFBP is explained along with motion errors sensitivity and motion estimation methods. The book also explains the Bayesian change detection, covariance moving target extraction and polarimetric subsurface imaging.

Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, the George Eastman Museum approached a group of photographers to ask for their favorite recipes and food-related photographs to go with them, in pursuit of publishing a cookbook. Playing off George Eastman's own famous recipe for lemon meringue pie, as well as former director Beaumont Newhall's love of food, the cookbook grew from the idea that photographers' talent in the darkroom must also translate into special skills in the kitchen. The recipes do not disappoint, with Robert Adams' Big Sugar Cookies, Ansel Adams' Poached Eggs in Beer, Richard Avedon's Royal Pot Roast, Imogen Cunningham's Borscht, William Eggleston's Cheese Grits Casserole, Stephen Shore's Key Lime Pie Supreme and Ed Ruscha's Cactus Omelette, to name a few. The book was never published, and the materials have remained in George Eastman Museum's collection ever since. Now, nearly 40 years later, this extensive and distinctive archive of untouched recipes and photographs is published in The Photographer's Cookbook for the first time. The book provides a time capsule of contemporary photographers of the 1970s--many before they made a name for themselves--as well as a fascinating look at how they depicted food, family and home, taking readers behind the camera and into the hearts and stomachs of some of photography's most important practitioners.

Book excerpt: The report presents data on (1) the optimal sizes and locations of maintenance apertures, and (2) man's working-reach distances through such apertures, for both the shirt-sleeved and the pressure-suited conditions. In all cases, the vertical dimension of the aperture permits the technician to maintain simultaneous visual and manual contact with the task area. Data include Depth of Reach, Breadth of Aperture, Vertical Dimension of Aperture, and distances to the floor from both the lower and the upper edges of these apertures. Different apertures provide for forward or lateral reaches, in the standing or seated position, with one or both arms. Data are reported in the 5th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 95th percentiles. Ranges, Means and Standard Deviations are given. Recommendations are made regarding the appropriate application of maintenance accesses. (Author).

Book excerpt: The present work deals with a highly resolved radar with a synthetic aperture (synthetic aperture radar - SAR), which uses a beam steering to improve performance. The first part of this work deals with the influence of various effects occurring in the hardware of the High-Resolution Wide-Swath SAR (HRWS SAR) system. A special focus was set to single bit quantization in multi-channel receiver. The second part of this work describes SAR processors for Sliding Spotlight mode.
