He escapes from there and travels to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin… A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. David Copperfield is a fatherless boy who is sent to lodge with his housekeeper's family after his mother remarries, but when his mother dies he decides to run away… Hard Times is set in the fictional city of Coketown and it is centered around utilitarian and industrial influences on Victorian society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here we are on the banks of the Nueces in the grand camp of the army of occupation." So wrote Lt. Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana when in 1845, not many months before the outbreak of the Mexican War, he joined the white-tented encampment of General Zachary Taylor in Texas. And so he continued writing during the uncertain life of camp and campaign for the better part of the next two years. In these letters to his wife, published here for the first time, Dana provides a detailed, firsthand view of the United States' war with Mexico—fighting off the Mexicans from within Fort Brown during the initial attack; hearing the distant thunder of artillery as Taylor's army marched to the rescue of the beleaguered Seventh Infantry; occupying Matamoros; taking Monterrey, street by street with the defenders firing from the housetops. After Monterrey, Dana was at the siege of Veracruz and on the march to Cerro Gordo. Badly wounded in the attack on Telegraph Hill at Cerro Gordo, he was left on the field for dead, but was rescued by a burial party a day and a half later. Following the Mexican War, Dana went on to become a major general during the Civil War and later to have an illustrious career as a railroad executive. Nearly one hundred of his letters about the Mexican War survived and are now in the archives at West Point. From them Robert Ferrell has edited this vivid, eyewitness narrative.

Book excerpt: In “Lawman’s Heart,” Larry Traynor is driving a stage with his shotgun guard, Sam Whitney, the man who has been his mentor in life, when a hold-up occurs. Sam is shot dead. Traynor is determined to bring the thief to justice, but then fate intervenes. Although he does not recognize the symptoms, or what they mean, Traynor is suffering from heart failure. He is deputized to give pursuit even though, given his condition, it can only lead to his ruin. Joe Palmer in “White-Water Sam” had been a deck hand on the Thomas Drayton before the railroad came. Now the fine river boat is permanently moored in Lake Bennett, useless to her owner, because the only chance for a future is to get her downstream through the impossible rapids of Miles Canyon. Sam Bridgeman once tried to shoot those rapids with a river boat, the Denver Belle. He knew that the only way to do it was to ride the very center of the rapids, but the Denver Belle turned sideways and smashed against the rocks. The experience affected Sam’s mind. Now Larry Decatur arrives with enough money to buy the Thomas Drayton, but he knows nothing about river boats and certainly cannot hope to run the rapids in Miles Canyon by himself. In “Black Thunder,” Dan Harrigan and Angus MacTee are partners in a mining claim. What divides them in Kate Malone. They both love her, but she loves only one of them, and has gone into hiding. MacTee learns her whereabouts, and heads out, with Dan Harrigan in pursuit.
