Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to compare rates of anxiety disorders and symptoms in college students with and without ADHD and to identify factors that protect against anxiety in this population. Forty-six college students with ADHD and a matched control group of 46 students without ADHD participated in this study. Participants completed a diagnostic interview to assess for lifetime and current anxiety disorders; they also completed several measures of anxiety symptoms. As expected, participants with ADHD were more likely to have a lifetime history of an anxiety disorder than participants without ADHD, and were also more likely to report having entered college with a previous history of an anxiety disorder. Participants in the two groups were equally likely to meet diagnostic criteria for a current anxiety disorder. Participants in the ADHD group endorsed significantly lower self-efficacy and significantly higher maladaptive beliefs about worry and obsessive-compulsive symptoms compared with the control group, though the between-group differences in maladaptive beliefs about worry and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were no longer significant when depressive symptoms were covaried. The two groups did not differ on symptoms of panic, social anxiety, or worry, which was unexpected. Perceived social support was associated with a lower risk of having a current anxiety disorder in the ADHD group. Even when K-12 school-based interventions are successful and students with ADHD matriculate to college, there is a high likelihood of college dropout, failing grades, substance use, dangerous driving, and risky sexual behavior. Unfortunately, there are few proven mental health treatments for college students with ADHD, and little is known about what works for whom. The present study examined the acceptability and efficacy of ADHD coaching for college students and examined the moderating impact of anxiety on psychoeducational outcomes. Fifty-nine students were randomly assigned to ADHD coaching (n = 30) or a control condition (n = 29). Consistent with previous research, students were significantly more satisfied with ADHD coaching and rated the intervention as significantly more acceptable than students in the control condition. The main effect of ADHD coaching was inconclusive, but a small positive effect on grade point average (GPA) was noted. Results from simple moderation analyses were similarly inconclusive, but trends tentatively suggest that high levels of anxiety may be a risk factor for self-reported psychoeducational outcomes but also may confer treatment benefit for academic outcomes. Recruiting large samples of college students representing a wide range of trait anxiety appears necessary to examine the impact of comorbid anxiety on psychoeducational outcomes.

Book excerpt: Deficit and dysfunction in college students with ADHD diagnoses are now well studied and known to be commonplace in clinical psychology research literature (see Green & Rabiner, 2014, for review). However, areas of positive functioning and psychological well-being have not been well examined. This dissertation aims to investigate the extent to aspects of well-being may be more or less developed among college students carrying a diagnosis of ADHD, in comparison to their college peers. This examination utilized a subset of data collected from annual national "Healthy Minds" survey of college student mental health in the United States (Eisenberg, D., Hunt, J.B., Speer, N., 2013). In total, well-being profiles were examined across 4 distinct groups: 1) students reporting ADHD diagnosis with no co-morbid psychiatric diagnoses, 2) students reporting ADHD diagnosis in addition to co-morbid diagnoses of an anxiety and/or depressive disorder, 3) students reporting an anxiety and/or depressive disorder without ADHD diagnosis, and 4) a comparison group of peers who indicate no history of psychiatric diagnosis. Overall, results suggest ADHD diagnosis alone was not associated with any significant reduction in well-being, and observed deficits may be best accounted for by co-morbid emotional disorder diagnosis. Students indicating diagnoses of anxiety and/or depression were more likely to experience reduced well-being in comparison to their peers across a variety of domains. Implications of these results are discussed further, particularly in regard to understanding well-being among individuals with mental health disorder diagnoses.

Treatment research for college students with ADHD is limited, and it is unclear if comorbid anxiety complicates or enhances treatment efforts. This study examined the acceptability and efficacy of a coaching intervention for college students with ADHD and investigated whether anxiety moderated the relationship between treatment status and psychoeducational outcomes. Twenty students were randomly assigned to an ADHD coaching treatment condition (n = 10) or a control condition (n = 10). Students who received the coaching treatment were significantly more satisfied and found the procedures significantly more acceptable compared to students in the control condition. The effects of coaching on psychoeducational outcomes over time were inconclusive, but trended in the anticipated direction with effect sizes in the small to moderate range. The results of simple moderation analyses indicated that student anxiety explains a small portion of the variance in student outcomes, with trends consistently suggesting that coaching was most impactful for college students with low anxiety. Implications of these findings are discussed along with suggestions for future research.

Although the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs is a normative experience of emerging adulthood, as rates of mental health disorders rise among college students, it is important to better understand the relationship between psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression) and substance use behaviors. This study sought to examine whether anxiety, depression, and quality of life in first year college students predicted second year substance use; or substance use behaviors of first year college students predicted second year anxiety, depression, and quality of life; and whether these patterns differed between college students with and without ADHD. Results demonstrated that tobacco use in first year of college was associated with increased depressive and anxious symptoms; depressive symptoms in first year of college were associated with increased cannabis use in second year of college; and anxiety symptoms in first year of college were associated with decreased tobacco use in second year of college. There were significant group differences between the ADHD and control groups in the relationship between first year anxiety and second year cannabis use and first year tobacco use and second year anxiety symptoms. Additional research is warranted to better understand these differences and further examine variables (e.g., gender, treatment for ADHD, anxiety, and depression) that may be stronger predictors of both psychological distress and substance use.
