Book excerpt: This is an in-depth study of the people of Bukhara and their relations with settled peoples and nomads, from Muscovy to China, and Iran to India. By using lesserknown, or hitherto untapped sources, it corrects long-held misapprehensions fostered by historians of hostile states and champions of the Timurid dynasty. Far from being afraid of their powerful Safawid and Mughal counterparts, the Uzbeg rulers of Bukhara caused them much apprehension and even influenced their foreign policies. 'Abbas I concluded a humiliating peace with Turkey because he wanted to recover Khurasan from 'Abdallah II, Akbar could not risk leaving Punjab during 'Abdallah's reign, Safawid and Mughal attempts at conquering the khanate failed dismally. The book deals fully with dynastic, internal and external problems, trade routes, coinage policies and the khans' attempts to encourage trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who and what are marriage and sex for? Whose practices and which ways of talking to god can count as religion? Lucinda Ramberg considers these questions based upon two years of ethnographic research on an ongoing South Indian practice of dedication in which girls, and sometimes boys, are married to a goddess. Called devadasis, or jogatis, those dedicated become female and male women who conduct the rites of the goddess outside the walls of her main temple and transact in sex outside the bounds of conjugal matrimony. Marriage to the goddess, as well as the rites that the dedication ceremony authorizes jogatis to perform, have long been seen as illegitimate and criminalized. Kinship with the goddess is productive for the families who dedicate their children, Ramberg argues, and yet it cannot conform to modern conceptions of gender, family, or religion. This nonconformity, she suggests, speaks to the limitations of modern categories, as well as to the possibilities of relations—between and among humans and deities—that exceed such categories.

Book excerpt: For the first time, an Islamic expert reveals the root cause of honor killing! This is the first book to demonstrate that the root cause of honor killing is not culture but the Islamic doctrine of amr bil maruf. In the book a real, qualified Islamic scholar meticulously analyzes how sharia law and the Islamic religious concept of ghayra provide the motive and amr bil maruf provides the detailed script that results in honor violence and killing. This is an outstanding book that provides a clear and concise account of how honor killing flows from Islams authoritative sources. The book shows how those sources link even sexual relations to the idea of Islamic supremacy and global conquest. -Admiral James A. Ace Lyons, Jr., former commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet With unique erudition, clarity, and courage, Akbari demonstrates, irrefragably, how the ugly phenomenon of Muslim honor killing flows naturally from Islams Sharia-based scheme for enforcing sexual morality within the Muslim community. Dr. Andrew Bostom, MD, MS, Author of Sharia Versus Freedom: The Legacy of Islamic Totalitarianism I am pleased to see this book published to deal with this vitally important topic. Abullah Al-Araby, Director, The Pen vs. the Sword Ministry &Author of The Islamization of America Must reading for understanding the underlying religious basis for honor killing and ghayra violence. Dr. Jeff Addicott, Professor of Law & Director, Center for Terrorism Law, St. Marys University Educators, child welfare workers, medical professionals, police departments, and emergency responders who touch the lives of Muslim women and children will find this book essential. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a wealthy and noble Sri Lankan Catholic family living on the outskirts of Colombo, the young Anushka finds herself torn between two very different worlds. The strict code of conduct that governs every member of her household, demarcates the deep gap separating the Westernised elitist bourgeoisie, of which Anushka is a reluctant member, and the ethnic Sinhalese traditions they disdain, taking their cue from the colonials who have ruled their country for centuries. Preserved and cherished by the low-caste Buddhist peasants from Hinnagama village, who work for her family, these traditions have an irresistible appeal for the rebellious Anushka. It is her independent spirit and the quest for living life, on her terms, which invite harsh physical punishment from her authoritarian father. The humiliation and countless hardships she suffers as a result, impel her to leave the village and move to the capital city, Colombo, where hazards lurk, for single women living alone. In a country in the grip of civil war, the result of a stand-off between the Sinhalese dominated government and separatist Tamil guerrillas bent on creating an independent state for themselves. Anushka ́s dream for freedom drives her to England, but things turn awry. She ended up behind locked doors. Will the indomitable Anushka, adapt herself to every obstacle thrown her way and succeed where so many others have failed. . ...' Written with sensitivity, insight and uncompromising candour by Nilani de Silva, this novel is a lyrical and evocative work that shocks with its moments of violence and cruelty. Illuminated with hope, yet, tinged with despair, the Monsoon Dream is as much a portrait of a spirited young woman who dares to challenge the anachronistic values of a conservative island society. As it is of a schizophrenic era in Sri Lanka ́s turbulent post-colonial history that is both reluctant to shake off its subservience to its British legacy and steeped in the ancient ethnic prejudices of caste and creed. Finally, Monsoon Dream is about life itself in all its glorious uncertainty -melancholy, disillusioning, bitter on the one hand, joyous affirmative and radiant with hope, on the other.
